With a win Saturday, the Portsmouth Lady Trojans could make history on two fronts. First, it would be the 1st Final 4 in school history, and 2nd it would put PHS in an exclusive club of SE district schools that have made the state tournament in both boys and girls basketball. Here are the 10 SE schools that have previously accomplished both:

NA and West are very similar teams, both are well coached and have very good PGs. NA’s big (Boerger) is a little better than what West had, but overall West was better.

That’s why this will likely be like last night’s game was for Portsmouth, maybe even worse. NA had some bad turnovers against Fort Frye that weren’t particularly against pressure that they’ll face from the Trojans.

Portsmouth can’t sleepwalk through warmups and the first half anymore though, it may not get them on Saturday, but another slow start like that in Dayton and it will be over, IMO.

I'd like to see Portsmouth's bench utilized more. The bench will need some experience outside of junk minutes and confidence in Dayton, especially against teams like CAEC who will match not only their skill, but their physicality.

Going into a deeper dive into the history that the Lady Trojans could make, if they can win Saturday they would join Reedsville Eastern (Eastern Meigs) as the only SE schools to make the Final 4 in boys and girls and have won a state title in either. Eastern defeated Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans in the 2014 D4 state title game.

No offense to the others, but if they have to go past 6 at the Final Four, they are done. Maybe in the future, yes, but not for this year.

The Lady Trojans have had a roster of only 9 girls all season and have done very well to date, going 21-5, beating Fairland and tying for the OVC title. Now playing for the Final 4 with that same roster. They have been tried and tested many times along the way.

It doesn’t matter. They can have all the bulletin board material that they want, if you turn the ball over against a passive zone, you’re going to turn it over a ton against Portsmouth.
