Mandatory Dead Period

Post by OVC »

Kentucky is currently in the middle of its mandatory two week dead period. There are no practices, weight lifting, open gyms, etc.. Should Ohio adopt something similar? What are your thoughts?

Wouldn’t pass in Ohio. The composition of the OHSAA as it is has too many schools who would argue that keeping the facilities open (the bylaw language in the KHSAA book says the facilities cannot be used) is in the interest of their students, and enough schools who don’t think it would be necessary to have one.

I understand the idea and how the provision’s intents would be to reduce the arms race in high school sports, but the time for this to pass would’ve been decades ago.

I believe that most schools in our area to my knowledge take the week of July 4th off as a kind of “unofficial” dead period.

Me personally, I think it would be nice to have that in stone. Typically you do not know when football weightlifting is going to be off until spring time, and by then most families have vacations schedule. Speaking from an athlete perspective, I know I felt like I was losing ground for missing weightlifting and conditioning because they changed the off week in the spring. Also- study’s show the best thing for training is rest. Players actually come back stronger. Let kids be kids, I know a lot of kids like to do side jobs in the summer so that can be a couple of weeks to pick up some extra $$$. My two cents.

I have a grandson who's going to be a freshman and I think it is crazy they go 4 hours a day. I say dead period would be great for the kids.

It is crazy but honestly that’s what most teams are doing and in order to keep up you’ve got to. A mandatory dead period would be the only way to stop it. Another solution could be installing rules much like they did with contact. June doesn’t need to be 4 hrs a day but teams do. Install rules saying maximum 3 days a week for June no longer than 3 hrs a day then bump it up to 4 days a week max but can’t be 4 consecutive. Just a thought that’s a different way to regulate things especially with so many doing basketball also and June is basketball month which I think is dumb also.

I say at minimum make a mandatory maximum hour requirement (maximum of 10 hours). The downside to that is some schools do morning and evening sessions for the convenience of the players and that would eat into that. There is no easy solution.

Chillicothe used to do a "District Wide Blackout Period" which meant the first two weeks of July was off limits. Typically this is when they did maintenance on the field, refinished the gym floor, etc..

"Per the Athletic Handbook, no activities, training, summer leagues, open gyms, camps, individual workouts, group workouts, etc. will be organized or conducted by coaches on or off of the Chillicothe City School District property during this blackout/dead period."

The following year they changed it to select a two week period we could choose from due to the covid restrictions & guidelines.

"The Summer Blackout Period is two (2) consecutive weeks between June 24 and July 14, inclusive of the first day and the last day you select as your Blackout Period. For example, your team may select:

Monday, June 24 through Sunday, July 7
OR
Monday, July 1 through Sunday, July 14
OR
Tuesday, June 25 through Monday, July 8
OR
June 26 through July 9
OR
June 27 through July 10
OR
June 28 through July 11
OR
June 29 through July 12
OR
June 30 through July 13"
