Varsity qualifying method

Post by JChipwood »

Just curious how each team determines varsity positions. Recently heard some very troubling info concerning my blue Devil golf team. Just asking to see if varsity spots are chosen or earned? Golf is not arbitrary, biased or influenced. I will say one round isn’t enough data but over three to four rounds the cream will always rise to the top. Concerning bc the to have the schools best team on the course the best players have to be on the course.

I think it’s even worse than that G. We used to play 36 from the mens tee and 36 from the back tee. Always assured the right placement for players 1-5. BUT I am hearing not all players qualify now. Some are “protected” and have guaranteed spots. I do t understand why a coach would open the door to being accused of favoritism in a sport where the score tells the whole story. Numbers don’t lie. Regardless of age, the best 5 should be the varsity team. If coach sees that number 6, 7, or 8?? are very close to being top five then a challenge system could make sense for the 5 or possibly even the 4&5 spots. That is very rare at small schools tho. Not saying determine the five and push everyone else aside but it should be determined by competing. Golf coaching is the easiest of all coaching spots bc there is no subjectivity in scores and numbers. I’m so confused with this process. Makes as much sense as letting the student body pick the starting qb for the football team.

Don’t get me wrong coach is a good man and good for the young people in our community. Our golf team doesn’t need any drama though and this lends itself to unnecessary drama. Send em out to compete and over 3-4 rounds the best player will most likely qualify first. By the seasons end the best player WILL have the best average score. Need to let the numbers do the work. Lots of other constructive ways to simulate and place pressure on players practicing. I could actually see this working IF the team voted on who is protected. The kids know how they rank just like other sports. They know who the man/woman is…..

Golf starts matches so early now.

I’m old but played for JHS from 88-91 and we had to do 10 rounds of qualifying and then coach averaged up the scores to figure out the 1-5 men…around 1990 it went to six players traveling.
