2024 Ohio State Football
After a long but eventful off season, the 2024 season opener is less than five weeks away for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
In the wake of a third straight loss to Michigan and an unexpected offensive failure against Mizzou in the Cotton Bowl, Ryan Day initiated (or was forced to make) the following coaching changes:
Former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator.
James Laurinaitis was elevated to linebackers coach.
Matt Guerrieri hired as safteys coach.
Carlos Locklyn added as running back coach.
The Buckeyes also added key players from the transfer portal. Will Howard was added as QB to provide experience and serve as a bridge to OSU's talented freshmen. Quinton Judkins at running back adds talent and depth. Seth McLaughlin hopefully will strengthen the offensive line while Caleb Downs brings star power to the defensive backfield.
Moreover, eleven Buckeyes who where eligible for the NFL draft return to play another year for the Buckeyes. Led by Jack Sawyer, JT
Tuimolau, TreVeyon Henderson, and Denzil Burke, these vets will add leadership and experience to the Buckeyes in 2024.
When all is said done about the off season, the Buckeyes are now considered to be contenders for the Big Ten and CFP championship. The 2024 season may indeed be championship or bust for Ryan Day. With new AD Ross Bjork going all in for NIL and player revenue sharing, it is clear championships are expected.

I guess the days of scheduling at least one great out-of-conference game are over... There's nothing here to bother tuning in for until mid season

Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
Begs the question though, who is out there that would be both better than Day and willing to leave their current job?
I like Day. His record is 56-8. He appears to run a relatively clean program. His players for the most part stay out of trouble. He is a good spokesman for the University. Yet his record against Michigan and post season is an abysmal 2-8. That is why I think the new AD will remove him if he fails to beat Michigan this year. Expectations are too high in Columbus.

Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
You watch if he don't beat Michigan this season Chip Kelley might take over jmo
Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
I always said Day was gone if he don't beat TTUN this year but with the new playoff format it could give him another chance if he can get to the NC game and not get blown out. Not likely they would get that far if they lost to a rebuilding TTUN at home, but anything's possible. Like the previous poster said who else is out there to replace him? Urban's not coming back and Saban won't come out of retirement with this NIL crap. I don't see Chipper being the answer. Ole Coop use to say if a new AD comes in the current coach will soon be in the unemployment line so he can get his guy. Question is who is that guy that can do better than Day has done? Just beating TTUN won't be good enough if they lose two or three games during the regular season and don't get to the championship.

Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
Ohio State's non conference is weak. Conference realignment and the need to play seven or eight home games to maximize revenue might be a culprit. They did cancel on Washington which makes you wonder if the future games against Bama and Texas will be played. With Grambling on Ohio State's schedule next year, Buckeye fans will have no reason to criticize the SEC for their chicken $%#@ Saturday

Let’s not act like Ohio State didn’t just play ND, Oregon, TCU, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech the last so many years. Georgia, Texas, Bama on the schedule in the coming seasons. With only 3 non conference games why would anyone go out and schedule more than 1 50/50 game. With 12 teams and multiple teams from the same conference making the playoffs the need to have such a strong non conference schedule is a thing of the past. 1 marquee game, a few scrubs to get ready for the B1G is what you’ll see from here out. Let’s not forget what Michigans non conference consisted of last year (ECU, BG & UNLV). Ran the conference and that schedule didn’t matter.Zahns Corner wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 1:16 pm

Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
Good points. Yet I never underestimate an athletic department's need to enhance revenue streams. That is going to assume more importance as college football enters true play for play with revenue sharing next season. I think OSU will have more need to collect $7 or $8 million dollars per contest in ticket sells against cupcakes as part of a eight game home stand rather than give up a gate every other year for a home and home with a marquee opponent.BuckeyeBlood wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 1:53 pmLet’s not act like Ohio State didn’t just play ND, Oregon, TCU, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech the last so many years. I love college football and Ohio State. I just worry we might not like the end product that pay for play will bring. Go Bucks!

Re: 2024 Ohio State Football
Because it's a lot of fun! But I'm not asking for "more than one," I'm asking for one! Those games you listed were/will be awesome— give me more... at least one per season, please. There are enough dogs in the B1G to pad your stats. You don't need all three of the non-conference games to be unwatchable.BuckeyeBlood wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2024 1:53 pmLet’s not act like Ohio State didn’t just play ND, Oregon, TCU, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech the last so many years. If I'm giving up 3.5 hours of my Saturday, give me more than Akron as a 50-point dog — good grief. At least grab a mid-level program like WVU, Pitt, Cinci, Va Tech...

Let's see, Georgia is south of Tennessee and North Carolina, east of Alabama, and west of South Carolina.
The preseason poll I posted was for the Big 10 only.

Ohio State's fall camp opened today. I guess QB and and offensive line have some issues to be settled.

Most importantly, hope for no injuries

WCMH just said this summer Will Howard ran the same speed as Marvin Harrison did on the field last year 22 MPH!
I never knew he was that fast. Chip Kelly told the Dispatch at Saturday's practice he out ran the whole Buck secondary for a long TD. He could be another Justin Fields if he's a halfway decent passer.

Interesting tidbit on Howard while he was at Kansas State. He never won the starting job on his own during off season practices. Injury to others paved the way to playing time and Howard took advantage.
My thoughts on Howard is he just needs to be adequate. Be a game manager, limit turnovers, just be enough of a running threat to keep defenses honest. If he has to have big rushing numbers, that means the offensive line has failed.

So you advocate putting the "foot" back into football?
I had to look the name up. Analyst for the kicking game at Ohio State. Good record at Findlay. Maybe he could be Tressel 2.0 when Day moves on.
