Valley has been on the upswing from what it sounds over the summer. However they’ll have to stop Heiland and the rushing attack from Portsmouth. They’ll have to had made big strides to do so bc last year they ran at will in moments

Is Heiland healthy and playing?

Valley has more than double the players out this year so their depth should be better than most people they play. Wasn't the game close until half the last couple of years then got out of hand in the second?

I’d have to go with Valley in this one. They have a heck of running back themselves. Plus a big line and athletic receivers. Heiland has been nursing a hamstring injury so that may continue to slow him down. Should be a good game, but I’ll take the Indians.

I think valley wins this one. For the first time in years they have 50+ players on the team. The lines are huge with lots of depth. This is also the fastest team I have seen them have in a very long time. They have one of the best backs around and now with the transfer he won’t have to carry it 25 times a game.

Heiland will absolutely be playing. He’s been out for about the last month due to aggravating his hamstring. Heiland should have a good game, but I think Valley will have to pay some extra attention to JT Williams too or he will hurt them on the ground if they key on Heiland too much. This game is always high scoring, defense rarely shows up for either team in this game. It’s week 1, but this one is a big one for both teams. 2 great backs, 2 big OLines and both teams out to make a statement. I’ll take Portsmouth with the road win.

Valley and Portsmouth look like mirror images of each other. Strong running backs and offensive lines, and limited passing games. Both QBs are threats to take it to the house every time they have the ball in their hands.

Looks like 2 even teams to me with turnovers/penalties likely deciding the winner. The McNeil/Heiland running back matchup will be real fun to watch. Stoked to have high school football back!*

I think this is going to be a great game. I also think these teams are similar. I liked what I saw from Valley on Friday but I know Portsmouth is a tougher team. Should be a fun game to watch. I’m hoping for an Indians win!

Game will be close like previous years but valleys depth was an issue. I think Portsmouth wins this one. I see the Trojans 8-2 possibly 9-1. West and ironton are the 2 that could go either way.

Should be a really good game, Valley is improved up front and as someone said these 2 sort of mirror each other. I just think Portsmouth is a bit too much up front and Heiland is one of if not the top back in the area this year. Portsmouth in a close one

But depth will not be a issue this year the roster went up by 20+ kids this year including a few transfers for once Portsmouth won’t have the speed advantage that they usually have either because this is the fastest team they have had in a really long time this is not the same team that people are use to seeing for valley

Just because Valley got some faster kids out doesn’t mean Portsmouth doesn’t still have the speed advantage. I guarantee you Portsmouth is still the faster of the 2 teams.

Valley won the first 4 games of this series dating back to 2012 when they first started playing regularly. Since then Portsmouth has won the last 7 games, no game played in 2020 due to the pandemic. During this 7 game win streak over the Indians, the Trojans have outscored them 292-146.

59-29 2023 Portsmouth
42-28 2022 Portsmouth
35-3 2021 Portsmouth
32-27 2019 Portsmouth
57-40 2018 Portsmouth
35-7 2017 Portsmouth
32-12 2016 Portsmouth

Those games results don’t mean much, except for the fact that what everyone has mentioned is true. A lot of points will be scored. With that said I’ll take my Trojans to push the winning streak up to 8 in a row. I think it’ll be a tough game, I hear Valley is quite a bit improved. I’d say the Valley offense can hang with Portsmouth, but I want to see if their defense is any better. Last year they couldn’t stop Chase Heiland if they wanted to. If they can, then they’ll definitely have a good shot at winning, but I’m not sure they can. Almost game time! Portsmouth 40 Valley 31

Didn’t actually realize the amount of points Portsmouth has put up to kick off the season each year, wild.

It is remarkable... Valley downtrend (after decades of winning) started with Portsmouth first win in that list and Portsmouth upswing started then as well. I am looking forward to a good game and the teams seem evenly matched on paper

Valley looked solid for the most part against Zane Trace a few weeks ago - they are a much different team from last year. I think they find a week one win!

Looks right pfloyd. Other athletes for valley that might see some action are Whitt and Logan.
