Burg has zero offense. No identity, poor play calling, bad fundamentals, etc. They actually got worse from game one to game two.
Has burg just hit a dry patch with their talent or what? I know they had a crazy run there for about 6 years maybe where every year they were just a load to deal with. And obviously the state championship during that run. But it’s always felt like even in their “down” years they’re still competitive and in the running for at least a league championship. What’s going on?

Hard not to make the playoffs now and the SOC is awful.

Good question. Think it’s a combination of things.

Two, Burg lost a couple players that could have helped. One has a slight injury and decided to sit out this year; is a great baseball player and may or may not return to football. The other transferred. Both would have helped a great deal.

Three, the spread is not the right offense for Burg’s current talent. Big OL with okay skill is a bad combination with a spread O, especially against teams with better skill.

Fourth, Burg is calling the O as if it’s Holden and Matthews on the field. Those are anomalies for Burg, but coaches are adjusting to that fact.

Fifth, something not touched on this site is with regard to a key coach. His health is not good; very sad situation.

Six, IHS is loaded this year. Also, McNick is also loaded. Really bad timing for Burg to have a young team.

My personal opinion: I think the O needs to change to match the Burg personnel and talent. Seems like the coaches are trying to shove a square block into a round hole.

I don't see the Burg scoring very much in this game. They just don't have an identity. Maybe it will come together for them. I hope so. I watched the McNich game and they were just overwhelmed and looked to be lost out there. When they ran they made decent gains but then came a pass and it was picked off or well covered. No short routes or high percentage passes to get the "O" rolling and help the team gain confidence. I wish them the best this week but Jackson does seem to have their number.

Don’t agree that they are heavy favorites. Waverly could easily beat them.

Not sure we are appreciating how bad the offense is.

No Waverly couldn't easily beat them, you have to understand how much of egg is laid by everyone on Burg week. Waverly's OL is really bad right now and a lot of that is youth I'm sure but Waverly caught a really good MT team in week 1, and a ZT team that had just lost their QB in week 1. Waverly has shown zero ability to run the ball on top of that, the MT game was won with a couple big kickoff returns and big chunk pass plays nothing of substance in terms of moving the ball. ZT they were held scoreless in the 2nd half, Burg is hands down the favorite. By the time these 2 teams meet Burg will be 14-21 point favorites that's just the way it is, Burg plays such a tough non-conference schedule I wouldn't put any stock into what the offense is doing right now.

Hope you’re right. Also hope the team has some confidence left by then. Body language was not good against McNich.

^^^^Yeah I'm sure it's been tough on those guys to start out a season this bad but when you schedule up in the non-conference you're going to get this from time to time and while Burg hasn't had it happen that much, it simply is time. Jackson probably beats them and we know HP is.

Really worried about burgs outside linebacker play in this game. Burg has to improve here. I think the offense will come around

Six, IHS is loaded this year. Also, McNick is also loaded. Really bad timing for Burg to have a young team.

Are they really young? I see a lot of players out there that played a lot last yr. Sooner or later you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say this is just who we are now. A very avg D5 football team.

Age matters a great deal in high school football. Watch the state championship games, and you’ll see starters that are mostly seniors and juniors.

Look at Wheelersburg starters, and you see lots of juniors and sophomores.

That said, I see Burg’s biggest problem being offensive scheme. It simply does not work against teams with more talent.

Waverly is looking good, they'll be even better by the time they play BURG.

Yes, Jackson will recover and be fine this week. Andy owns the burg
I have zero confidence in Burg beating Jackson. The offense looked worse against McNich than Ironton, despite McNich not having nearly as good a D as IHS.
IMO Mcnick would beat ironton

Ironton played their C game in first half the last 2 weeks. Then the depth and speed just becomes to much and they wore out Jackson and Burg. When Ironton has everyone healthy and firing on all cylinders. I think they are a couple TDs better than McKnick. If Ironton played burg at home . The first Qtr of that game doesn’t go that way. Remember what the McNick game at Burg looked like last year?

Ironton would be 2 scores better than McNick.
would it be close till the half yes but if you watch Ironton you would see they have speed and depth.
Ironton may finish 8-2 with this schedule and maybe better this is a different team this year.
Jackson is a solid team and I believe they could beat mcNick

If they are gonna change anything this season they gotta do it now. Maybe get a couple W's before Prep shows up. If they can grind it out and slow the game down they might do better at least offensively. The defense isn't a fast athletic defense either so they need to be able to control the ball & clock. Limit teams touches. Otherwise another bad loss this season might lead to them losing one they ain't suppose to like Waverly.

And THAT is why I said over the summer I projected burg at 5 and 5 this season. I predicted they would lose to Ironton. Mck, Jackson, Prep, and drop one conference game and all of you SCOFFED and went crazy. How bout now? Back to back mercy rules week 1 and week 2 and ya still have Jackson & Prep to go, AND as you say above...Waverly could be a problem. ( for example)

5 & 5 was reasonable observing what I have observed of burg over the past 3 or 4 seasons and the personell and staff in my opinion. It's not trolling. It is what I see.

I see a 6 - 4, maybe 5 and 5 team.

If it was back in our day, burg would not be a playoff team this season. They would play 10 & get the basketballs out.

Sidenote: playing Ironton and Prep isn't "playing up" burg fans. Ironton & Prep are who you should be playing. Same division and same region but suddenly the school of "superior coaching & culture" and a larger enrollment, is talkin about taking Prep off the schedule! Why? 😂 Why ya wanna run from teams in ya own region ya have to get through anyway? The attitude should be Anybody Anytime Anywhere like Ironton. But ya fanbase is waving white flags and talking about droppin teams instead of revenge. Lol.

That kinda talk lets everybody KNOW burg has been BUCK BROKE. 😂 lol.

A loss to Jackson = 1 and 12 vs Ironton Jackson Prep combined over last 3 seasons. A almost sure loss to Prep in a few weeks would make burg 1 and 13 vs the three programs combined over the last 3 seasons.

Burg begins the season getting mercy ruled back to back week 1 and week 2, the first of which came in their own stadium. 2017 is not walking through that door.
Can the Pirates get a win that matters this season?

a lot of overreactions here. Jackson and Burg are both evenly matched, this will be an ugly, grind it out, low scoring game. I could see it go either way, but this is a MUST WIN for Wheelersburg. Essentially the only points left on the board for them to grab as I don't see them beating HP, and I don't see them getting any significant points from SOC opponents.
