I 100% agree with this except the last paragraph. Current junior class had success in jr. high due to early pubescent growth. they are the same size and speed now and no longer compete with top tier talent much less dominate. I have never been sold on jr. high success or the talent of this junior class. The vast majority of the size comes from the senior class. Burg is going to struggle the next 3-4 years with top tier teams due to lack of size and speed.
agree, the jr class peaked in jr high
Maybe, but they’re still 1-2 years older than everyone.

Have the area coaching staffs have caught up? For years Wheelersburg has had better coaching than almost anyone locally.

that's weak mindedness. Mentally strong programs won't duck competition. That's the reason the schedule at Burg looks the way it does, playing scrubs doesn't make you any better -- like I said, there's plenty of those types of teams in conference.

Honestly, you can say the same for Ironton for that matter, they're at least attempting to instill a mentally strong program by leaving the OVC and playing better competition.
Absolutely agree.

I’d rather figure out how to beat those teams despite the talent discrepancy. The Versialles and Kirtlands of the world can do it, so why not Wheelersburg?
Basically what both of these burg fans are saying is IRONTON has the superior coaching and culture and burg should be more like them.
not saying that at all, I'm saying Burg has never ducked competition and never should. Burg has been scheduling up vs better competition during Woodward's entire career here. Johnson Central, St Clairsville, Villa Angela St Joseph, Portsmouth during the Cadogan years, Jackson, North College Hill, Bishop Watterson, Bishop Hartley, Chillicothe, Pikeville, McNich, etc. It's too good of a program with too proud of a tradition to duck schools in our same region.

Keeping Ironton on the schedule fits into that same mold now that they have turned their program around (never mind how they've gone about doing it). Dropping & ducking Ironton would be far more embarrassing for the staff, program and community than it is losing to them. Playing tougher teams prepares you better for the post season than whipping up on some bad teams.

the way the playoffs are set up now, records mean nothing. Virtually everyone gets in. Look at last year, Fairland a 2 seed in the region, probably the weakest 2 seed of all time. Didn't play anyone of any quality all season outside of Ironton, gets beat round 1 by the 15 seed PHS, who then gets beat by Burg. Give me a 6-4 season with losses to Ironton, McNich, Jackson & Prep over a 9-1 season vs that cupcake Fairland schedule every day -- it'll pay off in the end.

Play better competition, some years you'll take your beatings, other years you won't, but you'll always be more prepared come playoff time. Ask the 2021 Pirates how much better that playoff win vs Ironton felt after getting blown out week 1.

I think there’s a number of issues:

1) Complacency after winning state.
2) Coaches not qualified for their current roles.
3) The older coaches ready to “retire” from coaching.

But my biggest complaint is the offensive scheme. They run the spread as if they still have Holden and Matthews. Burg historically doesn’t have players like that, hence why the spread is the wrong O for the personnel. Burg coaches need to come to that realization and adjust the program from 5th grade and up.

I was getting ready to say this, the coaching staff itself has quietly undergone significant changes since the State Team. Not so much in personnel Kaskey obviously being the biggest, but there are also several who remain who have been on staff 20ish years, and a lot has changed in that time. And then like you said on your 2nd point, it seems like in my opinion, there are some younger ones who aren't qualified/dedicated. Almost seem content with just being on the sidelines more so than developing players.

Is the burg staff getting old and outdated to some respect?

Agree. This talk about Burg needing to schedule down is silly since the two best teams on their schedule are D5 schools. Makes zero sense to duck them.

Schedule is not the problem. What’s going on within is the issue.

It starts in the lower level it begins with the talent you have.
If you can run the spread you can if you run a power game where it a concept of just running then you build on that.
But it starts at the lower levels and recognizing what you have.
Burg will recover and be ok will they win a State Championship soon no one knows but they will be ok.

I like what Burg was doing first half. Power running. Shorten the game with more control .

Are they playing? I was watching it but now I can't find it. Did they reschedule?

I probably should have said resumed at which time it was delayed. I think that Jackson has the ball on their own 20 yard line, the 2nd Qtr just starting.

I forgot to say the score is 0-0.

Burg had some success running up the gut. Passing was off. I think they'd be better off throwing screens and quick slants.

I definitely didn't agree with punting right before the delay. Not my monkey, not my zoo

hard to believe how bad the passing game is. No big play threat on O at all.

Watched a little bit online but it looked like Burg went away from the spread on offense last night like many have been calling for. Might take a few games for it to show, but it the right move with their personnel.

Also heard an offensive lineman for Burg was seriously hurt. Prayers up for the kid.*

That will work better for them until they play good teams but then the offense will need some diversity to counter not really having the horses.
