I'm surprised it took so long to name him starter with all the coaches raving about his speed this summer. If he had that hard of a time beating out Devin Brown it makes me question his passing ability. Good thing is he has experience.

I do not think Howard ever won the starting job at K State, but became the starter through injury to others.

Howard just needs to be servicable, not an all star. Hit the easy throws, provide a bit of a running threat, and provide experience and leadership until Sayin or Noland are ready.

That is true for the most part but I looked it up and he was the named the starter in preseason last year and finished the season there. 8-4 record

If K State had ANY defense at all last year, they win their conference. And Howard was clearly the platoon leader of their offense.

Well I stand corrected.

Still my expectations for Howard is for him to be a game manager as QB and act as a bridge to the younger 5 star talent. If Howard can do that, Ohio State will challenge for conference and national championships. Who can ask for anything more?

Ohio State's championship hopes rest on improvement in the offensive line. The ability to get the tough yards on the ground to sustain drives and score in the red zone.

The addition of Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator giving more emphasis to the running game plus having Henderson and Judkins at running back will get results.

Akron versus Ohio State

From the embarrassment of the Cotton Bowl, through an off season of coaching changes, player acquisitions and retentions, the Buckeyes open the 2024 campaign as a contender for the national championship.

Akron poses no threat. OSU is favored by as much as a -58.5 spread. There will be better games available for our viewing pleasure. Yet I will watch the Buckeyes abuse the Zips hoping to have these questions at least partially answered:

How good is Will Howard?

Will Chip Kelly make a difference as offensive coordinator?

Will the Buckeye offensive line be improved?

Will Ryan Day actually relinquish play calling duties?

Comfortable but strangely unsatisfying win.

QB Will Howard may not be an upgrade to Kyle McCord in terms of pure passing ability, but he adds mobility and enthusiastic leadership to the position that was lacking last year.

The Buckeye offensive line at best is a work in progress. Running inside the tackles still problematic. Still the Bucks rushed for 170 yards.

Frosh WR JJ Smith was as advertised and freshman RB James Peoples showed flashes of stardom .

State's defense held Akron to 177 total yards and added two touchdowns through turnovers .

Ryan Day did appear to let new OC Chip Kelly call the game.

Watching Georgia today leads me to believe State is not at their level yet, but the Buckeyes have the potential to compete with the Dawgs

I thought Howard was pretty accurate throwing the ball. Line needs to work on run blocking. Everything else seemed to be pretty solid, but it was only Akron.

Western Michigan (0-1) at Ohio State (1-0)


The Broncos lost their opener at Wisconsin 28-14, while State had a comfortable but strangely unsatisfying win against Akron, 52-6.

Hopefully OSU can show improvement on their offensive line and get QB Will Howard more comfortable in running the offense.

I am encouraged that OSU's offensive line and running game showed moments of dominance against WMU..

OSU's defense was suffocating.

Will Howard had a solid game, yet at times seemed to be hyped up.

It was good to see OSU's backups get playing time to build depth.

Julian Sayin is going to challenge for playing time.

State's performance was its best since 2019. Maybe the Buckeyes will live up to their potential.
