I will give Burg credit they never gave up and fought hard all the way and I see improvement in them.
Prep will be a hard game for them but a winnable game IMO.
Good luck rest of the way

I'm not sure QB1 is the one that decided not to playart_vandelay wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 10:07 pmMy bad…was thinking of some other posts above when I responded to you. Doerr is going to be a player at QB if he is focused on football (he a solid basketball player as well), but freshmen don’t belong on field at Burg.Sonny Weaver wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 9:43 pmNever said there was a controversy, but all those areas need improvement (can’t help injuries, but they are a concern).art_vandelay wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 9:15 pm
There is no QB controversy. Rucker is your best chance to win, and freshmen shouldn’t be on field at Burg.*
This coming offseason though could be real interesting at QB1 position.*
Love the optimism but no chance against HP. That will be Burg’s most humiliating loss of the season.fielddaddy wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:27 amI will give Burg credit they never gave up and fought hard all the way and I see improvement in them.

This Burg team isn’t lacking on talent that’s for sure.
Exactly! It’s not a talent issue.Larry Fine wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:57 am Wheelersburg is huge up front , they have some hard runners and a couple real nice receivers, and the quarterback is plenty skilled enough to win games. exactly where do you see this talent? I'm not sure were watching the same team. I'm not sure there is one kid on this team that would be good enough to play for some of the more talented burg teams.RBH23 wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 10:10 amExactly! Ahh the pressure to be accepted by the affluent in the land of milk, honey, & "superior coaching & culture."art_vandelay wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 12:51 amI’ve followed Burg football for years. Ed Miller and Larry Hall didn’t have freshmen/sophomores on field unless they were special. And they didn’t have 75 player rosters at their disposal either.*

Complacency. While burg was busy telling everyone about their "superior coaching & culture" they slipped back and programs like Ironton and Prep passed em up and outworked em in the offseason. The Nature Boy wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:38 am No way Prep is a winnable game. I've watched Burg football since 89 and this team reminds me of the 2000 team. Went 5-5 and lost to Minford twice that year. As mentioned before this team is lacking all around. Fundamentals and conditioning a big area. I remember the Burg having small linemen and blowing big kids off the ball. Is it lack of talent or coaching? Hard to say but I'll still root for them. And I'll say this, with their schedule, they have no fear of playing the better teams in the region. Go Burg.
Them highly touted on seops milk and honey burg suburbs and superiority will do that to ya. Comparing them to Holden and Matthews? No. But comparing them to typical Burg teams over the past 25 years? Talent at QB, RB, and WR is not a problem. Also plenty of size on the line.fbnut wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 10:43 amexactly where do you see this talent? I'm not sure were watching the same team. All of this is pretty spot on.RBH23 wrote: Sun Sep 08, 2024 7:18 pmComparing them to Holden and Matthews? No. But comparing them to typical Burg teams over the past 25 years? So what’s the problem? Well let’s take the QB. The development of him by the coaching staff has been criminal:
- First mistake, they played him at varsity as a freshman. Kid was not ready for this and never should have been on the field as a varsity player.
- Second, because the coaches put him in as the backup as a freshman, the kid who should have been backup eventually quit football. A terrible mistake.
- Third, now the young QB was forced into the starting role as a sophomore since the coaches messed up the QB room. Worse, the coaches opened the playbook instead of easing the sophomore into the role. Results: lots of mistakes and interceptions which did not help his confidence.
- Now, in his junior year, the kid lacks confidence and is questioning himself. Worse, the coaches refuse to simplify the offense for him which is exacerbating the problem. Just ridiculous what the offensive coaches are doing.
How to solve this long term?
- One, quit playing and dressing freshman for varsity. Keep them on the freshman team and let them develop as a class together.
- Two, starting and playing time at varsity needs to be heavily focused on seniors and juniors with no freshmen and few sophomores. This was practiced by Ed and Larry, also practiced by the top small schools in the state. Burg coaches are pushing young kids up too quickly which is hurting their development and confidence.
- Three, run an offense that fits our talent. Should have been done a decade ago. No idea why the coaches are unable to see this. Remarkable!
