In Season Multiple game/day "Classics" for 2024-25?

Post by pfloyd »

Anyone who has been around high school hoops, on SEOPs in the last 20 years, knows that pfloyd tries to get out and get "eyes on" as many SEO teams as I can in order to be fair and balanced with my weekly rankings ... one of the BEST ways to see teams is by attending the Tip Off Classics, in season Classics throughout December and January ... SEO admins/athletic departments/ "friends of the basketball programs" do an outstanding job in putting the "classics" together - ALL of them start the planning AT LEAST a year in advance! getting teams/schools to commit to playing in the classic while putting together "matchups" that are competitive/ matchups that will be good draws - after all classics are put on to make money, money only comes through the door when you put together good matchups, with quality teams/players, a good mix of local teams & quality teams OUTSIDE the SE District who are willing to travel Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line to play a game vs a team that will challenge/give them good feedback, make their team better ...

... I'm partial to watching SE District teams, but I understand the philosophy of organizers in challenging SE district teams, while bringing quality outside the district/state teams so WE as fans get to see some of the best high school players in high school hoops - I get it ... so we have classics for everyone! some are all local teams vs local teams ... some are local vs SE district teams from the far reaches of the SE district, some are SE district vs teams from out of the district or out of state ... it's all good in my book ANNNNNNND we have a choice of 1 day 5-6 game events ... multiple day events of 10-12 games - some all boys , some a mix of boys & girls STILL ALL GOOD as we can go to one venue, camp out all day , get eyes on 10-12 different teams or MORE if it's a multiple day classic, ALL for a single day price for all game that day ... I love 'em - but that's just me ...

I KNOW it's way early, football season is in full swing ... hoops season is on the horizon ... I like to get an idea of when and where all of the classics are being played so I can start filling out my calendar as to where I want to try to be to watch as many teams as possible ... I'm just trying to put together information for everyone to see concerning WHAT THE CLASSICS ARE, WHEN/.WHERE THEY WILL BE PLAYED ... hopefully by the time I get input from all of you we will have not only which classics are being played this season, but also who is playing, along with the times/dates so we all can plan and help support as many of the sponsors/schools as we can ...

What we know for sure :

Jim Berry introduced the Battle in the 740 last season to Southern Ohio - outstanding matchups and well run (meaning games starting on time, etc.) so the Battle in the 740 (Southern Ohio version) 2nd Annual Classic ... held at Shawnee State University's Waller Gymnasium... Not a multiple game day, but on 12/12 Western will travel to Paint Valley for an IN SCHOOL game. I don't know the details about public being at the game, but the game will be played around 11 am!

Western also plays in the Chad Hodson Classic against Fairfield, and in the Coach Young Classic against Manchester!

"SOC/SVC Tip Off Classic" @ Piketon High School -December 27th and 28th
Friday- Eastern v. Huntington 6:00
Western v. Piketon 7:30

Saturday- Western v. Huntington 6:00
Eastern v. Piketon 7:30

Because of the timing of Thanksgiving this year the "Tip Off" had to be moved to Christmas Break.

Chad Hodson Classic: @ Leesburg Fairfield -January 4th
11am- East Clinton v. Lynchburg Clay
12:45- Blanchester v. McClain
2:30- Portsmouth Clay v. Whiteoak
6:00- Adena v. Hillsboro
7:45- Western v. Fairfield

I believe there is a Girls game hidden somewhere in the lineup. I assume between 2:30 and 6:00 games. The Adena/Hillsoro and Western/Fairfield games are rematches from last year. Both were well attended and good games.

Dave Young Classic: @North Adams -January 18th
10am- Huntington v. Ripley
11:30- Portsmouth Clay v. West Union
1:00- Wellston v. Whiteoak
2:30- Western v. Manchester
4:00- South Point v. Peebles
5:30- Blanchester v. Eastern Brown
8:30- Georgetown v. North Adams

Again I believe the NA girls will play a game in between the 5:30 and 8:30 game times. This day is always fun and a great tribute to a great man.

...THIS IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA!!! I love it even if the public attendance may be limited ... I commend both Western Pike and Paint Valley - get the student bodies at the games !!! Western Pike as I have learned in the past few years is a "forward thinking" school district educationally, vocationally to go with the school/community working hand in hand for the betterment of all ... my hat goes off to PV for their agreement in making this happen! I hope it's open in some capacity - it will be a good game from the cheap seats! ...

This will be open to the public. Obviously with it be during the day it will deter some attendance, but it will be a trade off each year for Western and Paint Valley students, ALL OF THEM, to be able to attend a game (at least for the home team). Both schools agreed that this was a great trade off for one game per year. It will be something for both student bodies and teams to look forward to each year, it will get kids involved who don't normally get to be involved with game night. We will never close it to the public, but we do understand that folks will have to take off work to attend. I have witnessed it done in other schools and in other sports.
Thank you for the kind words Pfloyd. I will say that doing things that are different have never scared me. I asked a couple of schools before Paint Valley willingly said they would be happy to take part! So I do commend PV staff and AD Ewry for jumping in willingly. We are excited about the opportunity to do something school for both student bodies!

It’s definitely worth it to give up the one home game’s gate to be able to do this for the student body, IMO. I think it’s a great idea and I also hope more schools can do this in the future too!

A couple of other "classics/holiday" tourneys to get information out about :

Cabell Midland (WVa) Holiday Tourney 12/20 and 12/21 ....Chesapeake is playing Cabell Midland ... other teams from Ohio participating?

Chesapeake is paritipating in the Harvest Prep midseason tourney on January 4th vs Franklin Monroe (FM was 18-6 last season making it to the D4 Regional Semi)...

If anyone can gives us more information about a menu of games/times for both venues would be great - thanks ...

Others we need information for:

* Hocking Valley Bank Spartan Classic @ the Alley Alexander High School (2 days)
* Zane Trace Tip Off Classic @ Zane Trace(2 day event)
* Citizen Bank Clash @ the Coliseum at Warren ( 2 day event)
* Dave Young Classic @ North Adams (January 18th)
* Chad Hodson Classic @ Fairfield Leesburg (January 4th)
* Ironton Holiday Classic @ Ironton
* Horizon Holliday Classic @ Circleville
* River City Classic @ Marietta College
* Wendy's Hocking Hills Jamboree @ Logan High School
* ???????????

... I marked through the Classics that we have information about ... I have the schedule/teams for the Clash at the Coliseum but usually Coach Mark Duckworth posts a nice flyer etc for the Clash at the Coliseum - I will let him then reinforce it on this thread ... the other KEY Classic is the Ironton Holiday Classic - ALWAYS an outstanding lineup of games with a mix of local/SEO teams vs quality teams from out of state ... I'll try to get ahold of the Ironton folks tonight and get the dates and lineup of teams/games ...

... the Hocking Hills Jamboree at Logan High School IS taking place based on a FB post I saw ... the Logan event has a mix of teams from the Central District (OCC) & a few local teams - I believe Adena, Logan Elm, Unioto, South Point, Logan, Lucasville Valley were the SEO participants last season with Unioto vs South Point as the only SEO matchup ...

Starting with the Zane Trace Tip-off bookending Thanksgiving ... then 2nd weekend in December 12/14/24 running for 4 straight weekends, then weekend #2 in January - 5 of 7 weekends - we have an opportunity to take in 5-6 games every Saturday with bonus games on Friday's ... as you can see from the above post - there ARE 3 or 4 MORE Classics that will be played probably present conflicts with classics scheduled on the same days/times ...for ME - I always struggle trying to determine "where" I'm going to go as I feel obligated to be at all of them LOL - as I have gotten to know many of the folks putting together the events ... BUT for everyone - CHOOSE one that is closest to you ! go out and support not only the teams/players and coaches BUT ALL of the organizers/VOLUNTEERS/ school personnel who give up their time/holiday weekend to put on the great shows of high school hoops all across Southern/SouthEast/West of Rte 23 ... I hope to see many of you at one of the venues over the opening month and a half of the 24-25 season ...

I don't have the overall schedule of games or participants in the Hocking Hills Holiday Jamboree BUT the dates are apparently 12/20 & 12/21 (the same as the Clash at the Coliseum ... Logan plays Heath @ 5:30 on Saturday on the 21st @ Jim Myers Gym ...
