Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
Honestly? I know the old heads won't like this but I think this is the best ever Ironton team.
They have the best at getting the talent ready and getting the best talent now they have the best coordinator in the tri-state.. This wining combination = best ever fighting tigers team!!!

Revisit this thread in late November to really see
2019 Heisman Trophy Winner, 2019 National Champion
Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
First, Ironton is a different school now compared to the Lutz days. We’re talking about comparing a D5 school to a D3 school. So that makes a true comparison tough.I-TownFanatic wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 9:34 pm Honestly? I know the old heads won't like this but I think this is the best ever Ironton team.

But let’s put that aside:
- Level of competition: it’s not really close. During Jackson’s time alone at IHS, he played against Joe Jurevicius and a loaded MLC team, Randy Moss, and the team from DC with a RB that played at ND. 2024 IHS team has not nor will not see talent like this.
- Players: current IHS has some really good players. But as good as Terry is, for example, he’s not Jackson. Terry has zero chance at getting a scholarship to OSU while Jackson actually saw the field.
- Able to compete against ML and Kirtland: on another thread, we are debating whether this team could win the MAC. There’s no debate the 1993 team would have won it. They would have beaten ML and Coldwater at their own game. Would beat Kirtland as well.
- Coaching: again, not close. Lutz is a legend!
Now the 2024 offense is dynamic with regards to their ability to pass which was not as common in 1993. But the 1993 IHS team shutdown the DC team that ran a spread offense with D1 athletes at receiver and running back.
It’s easy to forget how good IHS was back then; they were special. Just a different time for Ironton and their football program.
Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
Lutz was able to "pull" in players from around the area and win a title, now this group has been able to "pull" in players from a major larger area as someone said let's see in Nov/Dec. because this team is so talented if they don't win the title they never will.
Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
This Ironton team could beat any of the old Ironton teams. They are too fast and bullying bigger teams as in run heavy teams. The defense is just legit and so many play makers on both sides of the ball. People wont like to hear this…If you ask any older Ironton guys they will tell you the same. Ive never seen a Ironton team in this good of shape.RBH23 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 10:56 pmFirst, Ironton is a different school now compared to the Lutz days. I have said this for two months. This CAN be the best ironton team of all time. When you have the top 7( if not more) players in the area on a division 5 football team you are going to be a tough out. This roster is loaded to the max. Whine all you want but the recruiting has payed off. It never hurts to have the most talent when playing against other teams lol.

Pretty sure the 79 team was all home grown. I'm not sure about 89 teamgreygoose wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2024 6:36 am Lutz was able to "pull" in players from around the area and win a title, now this group has been able to "pull" in players from a major larger area as someone said let's see in Nov/Dec. because this team is so talented if they don't win the title they never will.

This is a top 5 Ironton team and they may not even win the region. Harvest Prep is a bad matchup for Ironton.

This Ironton team is special; however, they aren't beating the '89 team. Brownstead and Conwell behind Cyrus and Coffman...talk about a punishing team! I believe there were 6 from that team that went D1/1AA.

Or, for that matter, Mr RRR. I saw him on here not that long ago, within the last year, talking about the state of St Joe.

Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
Yes, and I believe Coach Lutz himself said that the 78 team was the best he ever had. Logan being on strike kept them out of the playoffs. This team is loaded, it could be right up there when it’s all said and done, definitely more balanced.TheFlyingDutchman wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2024 10:44 amPretty sure the 79 team was all home grown. They are 5-0 and even though they tried to schedule heavy this year they haven't been tested yet. Put the ball on the ground as much as they have against good teams and they are not going to like the outcome. Hartley was your hardest opponent so far and they give up after the first TD after the half. I really don't see anyone else on the schedule that's going to test them. They are going to go into the playoffs just like the last few years essentially untested and run into stiff competition and not know what to do when they get knocked in the mouth. Or worse loss a game by a score after fumbling the ball away.
Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
To me the skill group on this team is higher in numbers than the Lutz days skill groups. I’m an outsider for sure but as special as this team is, Lutz was a special coach. His teams were all in better shape than This years team which isn’t a knock bc same for every other current team. His teams would also play with more discipline. Made very few mistakes much less dumb/costly mistakes. The older teams were better blockers and tacklers and ran the ball stronger. Not saying which team I think is best ever, just saying those old timers do have some very valid points. Seeing D1 talent at Tanks isn’t a totally new thing. It’s def next level now so kudos to the staff for that.
Re: Is this years Ironton Tigers the best ever Tiger Team?
I think the IHS talent today is next level compared to the competition. The IHS talent back in the day was going up against some of the best talent in the country; something the 2024 team has not seen. If the IHS teams from the Jermon Jackson years were playing today, they would have multiple D5 state titles. No team in today’s Ohio D5 could hang with those Lutz teams. Even Kirtland and ML wouldn’t be much competition for them.JChipwood wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2024 6:16 pm To me the skill group on this team is higher in numbers than the Lutz days skill groups.
