MVL Week 6 Slate

Post by MVLfan »

Hard to believe we’re on the downhill part of the season already. Fastest 10 weeks of the year.
Here’s the Week 6 slate with my take on each game.

Maysville @ TV. TV by as many as they want.
RV @ Sheridan. Does this game happen? If it does, Sheridan by as many as they want.
Philo @ Crooksville. Philo might be the 2nd best big school this year. We’ll see in a week. Philo by 3+ scores
John Glenn @ Meadowbrook. These 2 have had great back and forth the past few years. Philo ran it right at Meadowbrook last week, expect JG to do the same. Both could really use a win!
Morgan @ West M. West got a weeks rest, Morgan lost to Crooksville. Bad night to be a raider.
NL @ Coshocton. NL bounces back against winless Coshocton.

Playoff Outlook
**With the uncertainty of when RV plays again, some of these could be adjusted because divisor modifications if forfeit.

D3
Tri Valley looks to pretty well have locked in a 3 seed, assuming they take care of business the rest of the way. Would need Watterson or Big Red to lose to jump them. IN
Sheridan got the important win against John Glenn Friday to preserve their playoff hopes. Currently 3-2 with Philo, TV, and NL remaining. They need to win one of those to be in. Next week versus Philo will be HUGE. IN
John Glenn really needed to win last week. They now need some help AND to beat Philo week 9 to have a chance. OUT

D4
New Lex has a favorable back half schedule before a week 10 game against Sheridan which will likely be a win or go home game for the Generals. Look to finish somewhere between 3-6. IN
Philo has been steadily getting better after starting 0-2. A week ago I felt certain that they’d be 5-5 with losses to Sheridan, TV, and JG weeks 7-9. I think they get one or maybe two of those and finish 6-4 or 7-3. If they do win 1-2 of those they’ll finish in the 9-13 range. If not, they’re be 15/16 seed. Regardless, the electrics are IN!
Maysville could potentially lose out and finish 2-8 as Crooksville looks to be better currently. They have a tough 3 week stretch looming with TV, NL, WM. OUT

D5
West M won’t be tested the rest of the way. They’ll finish 7-2 but with the top heavy favorites taking in a lot of points, I’d say the Tornadoes finish somewhere between 6-8. Ideally they finish 6 for matchups. Otherwise they could face an underrated Wheelersburg team round 1 and then a top team round 2. Outside of Ironton, Prep, and Wheelersburg, I’ll take the Tornadoes against anyone else. IN
Meadowbrook really needed a win last week. If they can upset JG, they’ll have a shot at sneaking in as a 15-16 seed as they still have NL and WM down the stretch. OUT
Crooksville will need to upset Maysville week 10 to have a chance at getting in as a 15-16 seed. They just aren’t getting many level 2 points from their wins. I do think they beat Maysville week 10 and head to Ironton week 11. IN with a win week 10, OUT with a loss.
Coshocton to me is the storyline of the year. After returning their entire OL and QB and replacing last years skill guys with a group of sophomores that dominated 7-9 grade, they sit winless. Their biggest hope would be to beat Crooksville week 8 and RV week 10 to close out the year with 2 wins in 3 weeks to finish on a positive note. OUT
Morgan is about to hit murders’ row (WM, JG, Sheridan) after losing to Crooksville last week. They’ll get RV week 9 to get a win. OUT
River View is in the middle of a BAD stretch with Sheridan, TV, and JG upcoming. Curious if they play any of those games, or practice for 3 weeks to have a chance against Morgan and Coshocton weeks 9-10. Bad situation for the Black Bears. OUT

LOCKS: TV, NL, WM
CONTROL OWN DESTINY: Philo, Sheridan
NEED HELP: John Glenn/Meadowbrook winner, Crooksville
OUT: JG/MB loser, Maysville, Morgan, Coshocton, River View

Maysville @ TV. TV is looking better than ever.
River View @ Sheridan. Sheridan's JV in a running clock
Philo @ Crooksville. Philo has found some offense and will roll
John Glenn @ Meadowbrook. John Glenn should win " but" if they're flat like last week, the script gets flipped.
Morgan @ West M. West M is rested and their starters get to play a half this week.
NL @ Coshocton. NL rebounds by a bunch.

In reality JG needs RV to cancel so they can find an opponent " and hope to beat" with 2nd level points to make the playoffs unless they run the table ( which is a slim chance ).

I’m sure it’s not as easy as saying “we need 2 weeks or 3 weeks” as you just don’t know the extent of injuries or quantity of injuries.
I haven’t found any replacements for this week for Sheridan, but I did see Harvest Prep was free next week. Tri Valley vs Harvest Prep would really be a fun one to watch.

Spoke to a family of a player, The game is on. Don't know what it'll look like but RV will travel to Sheridan to play a game Friday for Sheridan's Homecoming game.

Insane to me. They should have to forfeit the rest of the season. Not pick and choose what games to play.

My understanding is that Sheridan might have pushed them into play, because of homecoming. That's also why I mentioned that idk what it'll look like. I imagine that there was some agreement to how long do the starters play, no returning punts and kicks..... maybe a running clock in the 2nd quarter or something of that nature. That's just my speculation. Even if Sheridan went starters very limited, their 2s & 3s could probably do just as much damage to a "depleted" RV team.
TV and JG's ADs better already be doing leg work to get themselves some game the next 2 weeks.

Best case scenario for JG’s playoff hopes is probably for RV to cancel and find someone to beat that provides L2 points. We will find out how bad JG wants in the playoffs; according to Twitter openings for Wk 8 are Canfield (D3 R9 2-3), John Adams(D2 R5 3-1), Hopewell-Loudon (D6 R22 5-0 AP#3) which are all 2+ hour drives.

Would love to see a TV vs Harvest Prep matchup in Week 7 but I’m not sure it’ll happen. I don’t believe TV has much to gain out of playing this game, aside from pride. They appear to be a pretty firm top 4 seed in the brutal D3 R11. Do they take a “bye week” to rest and recover for the stretch run of Philo, Sheridan, JG, playoffs?

Maysville/TV - Scotties big. Can anyone in league stay within 20?
RV/Sheridan - Sheridan’s 2’s and 3’s get major run
Philo/Crooksville - Philo by 3 scores
JG/Meadowbrook - Colts put up points but JG runs wild
Morgan/West - Tornado running clock
NL/Coshocton - NL running clock

I’d say it would benefit every school to take the forfeit to drop their divisor over playing someone that offers no level 2 points. Probably why West didn’t get someone last week. A lower divisor likely gave them a high point total. If this wasn’t homecoming for Sheridan with all the extra stuff going on, they would have encouraged RV to rest up and taken the forfeit, which would have helped them. Because of this, I doubt any team looks to hard to find a replacement. If you pick up a game, you want a guarantee win and level 2 points, but tough to find a school with comparable size that is bad enough to guarantee a win but also good enough to garner level 2 points. John Glenn is the exception. They need points! They will look much harder than TV, as someone else said, there’s nothing to gain from picking up Harvest Prep- not a guarantee win, so you risk a 3-4 seed, and with a win against a good team, can you get out healthy? Not sure if a win would bump them up to 2 seed or not.

Nope. On quite a few things.

1. West M did try to find an opponent. Could not find an open opponent who would play.

2. Sheridan and Tri-Valley have home games against River View. Home football games are a good source of income. No school wants to give that up.

3. Beating River View gets you a few level 1 harbin points and no level 2 points. Yes point-wise it would be better for teams clearly in the playoffs not to play them. But losing a game vs beating RV is not really that significant change in points.

But
4. John Glenn does really need to find an opponent if River View cancels. Besides the 3 open schools mentioned above, I hear the Steubenville vs a Canada team that weekend is not happening and Steubenville is looking. Better for John Glenn to play one of the other open schools because all have some wins and likely a JG win. IF they would play.

I've heard from a couple sources that River View has been "encouraged" to play the rest of the regular season varsity games. Hopefully the opponents are understanding and show great sportsmanship.

River View 0-5
Philo with a 27-7 win to move to 4-2.
Crooksville falls to 4-2.
Meadowbrook gets the huge upset win and improves to 3-3 while also helping their playoff chances immensely.
John Glenn falls to 3-3
West M rolls to move to 3-2
Morgan falls to 0-6
New Lex rolls Coshocton to move to 5-1
Coshocton falls to 0-6
