I was there for three of them

The one at north west.

And the two when parks played. That was a great team. How far did they go that year?
They actually lost in the next round but to a buzzsaw in Valley View 55-13. That’s when Valley View was coached by Niswonger and he was running the run and shoot offense and a two platoon set. Way ahead of his time.

Got bored at work last night, so here's the series history since 2000...

* is playoff game

Year Minford Wheelersburg
2000 24 14
2000* 28 0
2001 7 21
2002 21 43
2003 10 3

2020 28 42
2021 20 24

Few things that jump out.
Why does burg schedule up? 2011. They went 7-3 and missed the playoffs. Not a problem today with expansion, but that's your answer, imo.
Early 2000's must have been hell in Wheelersburg when Minford had won 3 out of 5.
2010 Minford team lost to burg but was best Minford team since 2000. That team lost in second round to the Jesse Sloan Oak Hill Oaks.

Eitel doesn’t go back far enough but I think burg went 9-1 once in the 90’s and missed the playoffs. Watched the oaks beat the burg once at oak hill (2010?) when burg had arguably the best rb they have ever had. Unfortunately he was all the burg had that yr.

This has been a terribly lopsided rivalry with only West-Northwest being worse.

That said, not sure why. Minford-Burg boys are competitive in every other sport (soccer, baseball, basketball, etc), but football has not been close.

Why has Minford not been competitive over the decades?

Knew an administrator that went to minford from burg yrs ago. He was told in interview process they wanted to be more like the burg. He went there, made some changes they didn’t like then was told “ your trying to turn us into wheelersburg “ :D . They ran him off after 1-2 yrs.

Many reasons for the lopsided nature.
Football has been the least successful sport overall at Minford. Some of that is because it may be the hardest sport to win. Other reasons (opinion of one):
The district has invested the bare minimum into facilities. The place was a dump until it was nearly condemned. The new stadium in 2006 was very nice and caught them back up but now there has been almost no investment in 18 years and they’re falling behind again.
Football is very coach dependent and outside of Daniels and some of the Brisker years there hasn’t been high level coaching. I think Coach Michael can elevate the program if given time and support.
There has been an acceptance of mediocre in many areas of the district, including athletics.
Many kids that play football are a year younger than their Wheelersburg counterparts. Every season we have many playing their senior season at 17, which from people I have know at Wheelersburg is not common there.

“Many” is a massive overstatement to say the least. I know guys who graduated at 19 from Burg and Minford, and I know guys that graduated at 17 from Burg and Minford. Both schools having good athletes at each of those ages.

Claiming that as a reason is ridiculous.

1993 season. Finished 5th in the region when only top 4 made playoffs.

It was Oesch. Burg went for 2 for the win at the end of the game and didn't make it. 16-15 final score

I think minford needs to hang on to this coach. They may have had 2 to 3 players that were varsity ready and those kids were getting hit hard last night but kept getting up.

Number 3 for minford is really good. Hits hard and goes after it. Number 23 was tough too. And both are underclassmen

All the players played hard and the coaches didn’t shy away from running their stuff. The football kids need to come back

Minford kids played hard but just overmatched. Hopefully the new coach can get the participation rate up and turn Minford around.

Agreed…Minford job was never going to be a quick turnaround. From what I hear, Michael has been active in lower levels and that is what it’s gonna take to change the football culture at Minford.

As rbh said, Minford competes with Burg in every sport but football. That tells me the athletes are there, and they should at least be competitive with Burg in football. If Minford gives Michael time to fix the lower levels, they will have a solid program again 2-3 years from now.*
