Re: What Do Coldwater And Chesapeake Football Teams Both Have In Common?
I/many Agree that some regions are a mess.
I work with a guy, who was a RB for Martin’s Ferry. EARLY (2000’s)
He was like:” WTH- are we doing in region,17, with teams way up North, some near CleveLand area?
He was like, what happened to the slobber knockers with IHS IN THE regional finals…???
He has not followex as closely as i have to respective Alma Maters & expressed WHY create more Divisions, YO allow more teams to qualify, when it’s too far to travel! Financially for some schools.
I was like… GOOD QUESTION!!!

When they decided to expand the playoffs, they should have looked into adding regions. Instead of 4 per division, why not expand it to 6 or 8. A good argument is, the other sports have more than 4 regions. It would cut down on travel cost, allow fans to be able to travel to the games and it would still allow more schools in than 8 per region like it was previously.
Seriously though I’d like to hear what others think of the idea of more regions and take the top 8 as before. It would still mean 64 teams per region would make the playoffs if it went to 8 regions.

I agree. 8 wasn’t bad, but 16 is excessive. There have been some cases of a lower seed pulling an upset. But a 15-16 seed isn’t going to beat an Ironton, Harvest Prep, Coldwater, Kirtland or a Marion Local.

Not a bad idea. Unfortunately, with the OHSAA incorporating Competitive Balance numbers annually into the division breakdowns, the current state of affairs is sort of at odds with ‘more regions.’RollCoal wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 12:23 pm When they decided to expand the playoffs, they should have looked into adding regions. This idea is a breath of fresh air, I will say.

Re: What Do Coldwater And Chesapeake Football Teams Both Have In Common?
I definitely like the idea of them doubling regions instead of expanding from 8 to 16 teams. They probably would have made more money in the long run as more people would travel 45-60 to watch a 1v8 as would potentially travel 3-4 to watch a 1v16 or even an 8v9.
Re: What Do Coldwater And Chesapeake Football Teams Both Have In Common?
I guess if you are a senior, and want a shot at 11 games, they are all for 16 teams. Anything over 8 is probably too watered down.
Re: What Do Coldwater And Chesapeake Football Teams Both Have In Common?
This was my suggestion a couple years ago with the expansion vs allowing 16 teams in. We have teams that will travel 3 hrs to play a team in their region?? That's a problem, expansion of regions would've been the easiest thing to do and kept things at 8 teams at that point. Had they gone with 8 regions 8 teams per region would've given you the same overall number of teams making the playoffs but a much better pool of regional play overall.RollCoal wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 12:23 pm When they decided to expand the playoffs, they should have looked into adding regions. I’d say 12 is the perfect number 8 wasn’t bad but some deserving teams will get left out surely. And 16 is obviously too many

My senior year (2000), we went 8-2 and lost the two games by a combined 3 points (to a state runner-up and playoff team). We ended up I believe in region 20, which was all Cincy schools, and we were the 9 seed. If we were in region 19, like we always were previously, we would have been a 5 seed. We missed the playoffs that year by being placed in a region we should have never been placed in.

Exactly. Ohio has 88 counties. Make the region an 11 county area and cut down the 3 hour drive for a 1 vs 16 matchup. Sometimes I think whoever draws the maps doesn’t look at a map of the state..

Chesapeake in 2000 had 13.7 points. Nine seed in R20. If they had been in R19, 13.7 would have made them the…..9 seed.avalanche wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 4:50 pm My senior year (2000), we went 8-2 and lost the two games by a combined 3 points (to a state runner-up and playoff team). Four is probably not enough... but it sure meant something to make the playoffs..instead of this "everyone gets a trophy" mentality. 16 is way too many..and dangerously watered down. Nobody wants to be the 16 goin to the 1... 8 would be good but ohsaa will prob find a way to get everyone in... lol

Start the season as the first week of the tourney. Everyone is in. If you win you move forward, if you lose go play other losers from week one. Add games each week as teams drop out. Regular season stops at 10 games and winners keep playing until there is only one.Rza1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 10:58 pm Four is probably not enough... but it sure meant something to make the playoffs..instead of this "everyone gets a trophy" mentality. 16 is way too many..and dangerously watered down. Think of the money the OHSAA could rake in with that format!!!

The problem with this idea is you have regions like SEO.
D3 would have 5 teams (Athens, Chillicothe, Jackson, Marietta, Western Brown); D4 would have 5 teams (Gallia, River Valley, Unioto, Vinton, Waverly); D5-D7 would be alright, but only D5 comes close to having a region where you wouldn’t have a situation where even dropping it to 8-12 instead of 16, pretty much everyone is going to make playoffs.

Injuries hurt us that year, but we had to win 9 of those games to play week 11. Being up 19-0 and losing hurt us more than anything.avalanche wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 4:50 pm My senior year (2000), we went 8-2 and lost the two games by a combined 3 points (to a state runner-up and playoff team). Certain areas that could be affected by it but it’s a better solution for a lot more teams than having so many regions with the large drives. Having one here and there is at least tolerabledantargaryen wrote: ↑Fri Oct 18, 2024 10:34 amThe problem with this idea is you have regions like SEO.

Why do districts work in every other sport than football? It’s the same idea if you put in the extra work to map it out instead of possibly traveling 4 hours for a 3 hour game

The regions don't currently match up, Central might be in any region and sometimes SW region schools could take up parts of 3 and 4. When you get to lower divisions like 4 or 5 you might have a region like 15 or 19 with central, east and southeast schools. You would basically just cut each one in half east/west or north/south.
