I agree with BuckeyeBlood about the OVC. It is a good conference, but not overwhelming. Listed below is the overall record of the Trojans since joining the OVC in 2015, followed by the finish in the standings, and then the head to head records vs. each OVC school.

The Trojans scrimmaged Manchester last night, and won the overall score, with the highlight being the pace of play by PHS. Fast, fast, and faster was the rule for the Trojans, as they raced the ball up the court on offense, with a good number of fast break points. On defense, the Trojans played sticky man defense and basically stayed with that, creating offense by forcing turnovers.

There are issues to address, but I love how Coach Smith wants to play fast. It is a perfect fit for our athleticism.

The Trojans scrimmaged Athens and Northwest the past few days, and fared pretty well overall. They outscored Athens 34-17 the 1st two quarters, the JV's then played, after that I left to watch Indiana and the Buckeyes. Against Northwest, the Trojans won 3 of 5 quarters but the overall score was about even. Despite losing all 5 starters from last year's district champions, Coach Scarberry returns a group that will be very competitive in the SOC. They have some size and a nice PG.

Portsmouth's defense is going to be a headache for a lot of teams, including the OVC; if the officials will let the Trojans play aggressively. If not, PHS will have to scale back a bit to avoid serious foul trouble. I love how Coach Smith has the team playing unselfishly with defense being the strength of the team, and offensively stressing to push the ball up the court in a hurry.

Portsmouth plays a foundation game at Waverly this Friday, beginning at 6 PM.

JV's scored 3 points total in the 2nd half, and the varsity only managed 7. Waverly's bigs had their way with the Trojans, who to be fair were missing 6-5 Luke Stine and 6-5 Olynshay McKinley. Credit to the Tigers' D, but even open shots weren't falling for PHS. Where not having Stine and McKinley out was that the Trojans had no post presence which resulted in a 5 guard offense.

The bad shooting, though, had nothing to do with who was missing. I guess the Trojans can only get better, because the shooting can't get any worse.

petesweaty: The only answer I can give you is that the Trojans' 1st regular season game is Dec. 9th at home vs. South Point. It's just the way our schedule works. That gives us almost 10 days to work on our shooting.

Took in the game last name. Trojans do not have a kid that can create. Missing Logan Adkins has a slasher really hurts. Portsmouth guards were attacking too deep which made it hard for them to kick it out. At times, Thomas attacked it well and finish with a drop off. Other times he got too deep in the paint which led to turnovers. Defense was no where to be found. I’m hoping the Trojans didn’t press due to not wanting to show much but they had no ball pressure, nobody was bumping or helping on the back screens. Having Copley on staff is huge. Seems like the same staff they had when Coach Collins was there is now back on staff with the exception of Copley. A lot of work needs to be done but it’s early. Play your best basketball at the end of the season.

On another note, JV struggled. I have an issue with the lower feeder system in the program. Last year the 7th grade played the 8th grade teams and 8th grade played 7th grade teams is what I hear. To me, this does nothing to better your up and coming 8th graders. No matter if your 8th grade team isn’t very good, you should still play them against 8th graders to get them ready for JV.
