Minford 72 South Point 44 a D5 District Semi ... final

Minford 72
South Point 44 final

... pfloyd headed to the Waverly Downtown Arena last night to take in the upper bracket of the D5 District Semifinals ... tipping off the night was 21-1 Minford taking on 12-10 South Point ... the Pointers of Coach Wise took the early lead 4-0 (6-4 sr. Brayden Hansahw 2/2 from the FT paired with a Hanshaw drive & score off the glass) ... after a Bennett Kayser putback bucket for the Falcons followed by a SP turnover & the 6-6 Kayser finishing at the rim for a transition bucket .. South Point saw it's only lead of the game evaporate as the Pointers would score but one more fg in the quarter - a rebound & stickback by sr Ethan Layne ... the rest of the first belonged to the Minford D - forcing 6 SP turnovers ...3 of which were closed out by the talented Minford swing forward for buckets at the rim ... in all Kayser tallied 11 pts in the period with the only other MHS points coming from the FT line as soph Ashton Reeder went 2/2 and Myles Montgomery 1/2 ... Minford 14 South Point 6 after 1 ... the second period had Minford's on ball fullcourt & 3/4 court pressure wreaking havoc on the Pointer guards as the Falcons forced 7 more SP turnovers (13 for the half) .. of the 7 miscues the Falcons took 4 coast to coast for buckets ... Kayser ,a Nova Southeastern University Shark commit , showed why he IS a next level player as he added 12 more points to his total, 23 for the opening 2 qtrs ... to make matters worse for the Pointers - 4 more Falcons joined the scoring party in the frame as Reeder scored in transition 2pts/Montgomery 4 pts on a drive and a score off of a SP turnover ... 6-4 Jack Shoemaker 2pts with an offense board and putback 2pts ... 6-0 jr Curtis Glenn dropped the first three pointer of the game for Minford ... South Point got 3 midrange jumpers from sr. Ethan Layne , a Hunt 15 footer and Davon Lewis drive & finish were the scorers for SP ... the 23-10 quarter by the Falcons extended the lead after 2 qtrs to 21 ... Kayser 23 ... Minford 37 ... South Point 16 at the half ... the pressure man to man defense by Minford was relentless - after a made shot - full court pressure ... AFTER A MISS the Minford D picked up/pressured the ball many times doubling the ball before the halfcourt line ... the Pointers were able to beat the Minford defense down court only one time in the 4 quarters (when the bench was cleared by MHS) ... coming out of halftime, the Falcon D held SPHS to a 10 point qtr - Layne added 3 buckets to his total 6pts. in the qtr/14 thru 3 ... the Pointer defense focused on Kayser which opened up the floor for the other 2/3's of the Big 3 for Minford - Shoemaker & Montgomery hit back to back threes before Kayser threw down a 2 handed dunk in transition to close the door on the Pointers ... Montgomery finished the qtr with 7pts/12 on the night ... Shoemaker 5pts in the period ... Glenn added a transition bucket 2pts ... as the saying goes "first team to 50 wins" ... Minford 53 South Point 26 after 3 ... Coach Shoemaker for Minford rotated in his bench throughout the 4th period as the new to the floor Falcons turned the ball over 9 times in the 4th to inflate the Minford turnover total for the game to 12 - the starters thru 3 periods had but 3 turnovers ... vs the Minford bench, South Point put up 18 points in the final qtr - Davon Lewis with a trey & a pair of 2 pters (7 pts in the qtr) ... 6-4 sr. Braylen Hanshaw added 3/4 from the line and a transition 2 pts /5 pts in the qtr...Hunt, Layne and Caesyn Pope off the SP bench chipped in a bucket each ... Kayser got dunk #2 of the game to open the 4th for MHS, a trey from the top of the key finished the talented seniors' day with 30 points ... Shoemaker with a drive & finish to go with a bucket on the blocks 4pts ... Glenn with his 2nd transition basket of the game to go with freshman Colt Donahoe's bucket in the paint and sr. Ethan Cordle's transition bucket and deep trey from the corner in front of the Minford bench 5pts ... Minford 72 South Point 44 a final as the Falcons are going to the Convo ...

minford has choked year after year in district finals but i just dont see how this team does. Those teams had loads of talent but they didnt have a Keyser. He just too good for d5 around here. If ZT keeps it within 15 ill be surprised but looking at next opponent Coshocton or garaway one of those could keep it close w minford

... I see what you did there daniC ... you already know the response to this one ... Bennett Kayser has evolved - maturity, great midrange game, his 3 point shot has developed , 100% motor for 32 minutes - ALL going together where he is NOW a "confident" player - he believes in himself ... imo, one of the BEST things that happened to B Kayser was the recruiting season ... his commit to Nova Southeastern ... he always has had the talent ... but having recruiters/NEXT LEVEL coaches have an interest , validating what he does well/what they like in his game that translates to the next level... telling him THIS is what we would like to see improvement in during the season - confidence ... removal of "self-doubt" ... imo that's been the biggest difference in Bennett Kayser ... he plays knowing he, Myles are THE best players on the court every time out ... just my observations as to what I see is "different" in Bennett Kayser this year vs years past ...
