AM GOLD MUSIC OF THE 60s & 70s

Post by noreply66 »

The early 1960s was the era of the girl groups, and the Shirelles were chief amoung the artists who defined those times.Beverly Lee,Micki Harris,Doris Kenner and lead Shirley Owens from Passaic,New Jersey, called the Poquellos. They sang at high-school functions until a classmate, Mary Greenberg, fixed them up with her mother, Florence, who ran the Tiara label. After auditioning in her livingroom, they signed withGreenberg and enjoyed immediate success with --I Met Him on a Sunday

In 1961 their Will you love Me Tomarrow became the first girl-group to reach #1 on the pop charts.

Soldier Boy became their biggest hit ever.

Johnny Angel

Shelly Fabares (her aunt is the actress Nanette Fabray) played Mary Stone the daughter in The Donna Reed Show.

The song Johnny Angel was written during the New York city blackout by Lyn Duddy and Lee Pockriss(they never worked together again.)

Glen Campbell was the guitarist on the record

From the mid-60's to the early 70's, I remember sitting on the front porch with my oldest sister, listening to her AM transister radio. She used to sing "Downtown" (by Petula Clark...I think) to me all the time! Great memories! :-D

Ketty Lester,a veteran of both Cab Calloway's and the Ziegfeld Follies, shared space on the charts with Francis and Fabares, thanks to a unique arrangement of( Love Letters,) the Edward Heyman-Victor Young theme from the 1945 movie of the same name.

Only Love Can Break a Heart
Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis
Sang by Gene Pitney-1962-#2

Gene really stopped this song himself from going number one when he wrote-- He's a Rebel--for the Crystals and this past him and went into #1
