Due to bureaucratic delays, more than 9,000 houses in New Orleans condemned after hurricane Katrina struck,in August 2005,still have not been razed. The presence of so many abandoned, dilapidated structures has severly impeded efforts to bring back residents and rebuild blighted neighborhoods.

The number of "fugitive aliens" in the U.S.--foreigners who have ignored orders to leave the country--has nearly doubled since 2001 and now totals 636,000.The Department of Homeland Security has assigned 318 officers to track down the fugitives, giving each officer a backlog of about 2,000 cases.----------The New York Times
Emergency room visits for Cheerleading injuries have more than doubled since the early 1990s,and cheerleading now accounts for more catastrophic spinal and head inuries than all other high school and college sports combined. In recent years, cheerleading has become both highly competitive and perilously acrobatic, with teams hurling girls upside-down through the air.

Many of the nation's major cities would be shrinking dramatically were it not for the influx of immigrants in recent years, the Census Bureau reported. The New York metro region, for example, added 1 million immigrants between 2000 and 2006.Without them, the region would have lost nearly 600,000 people.
