The first player off Warrens bench played a lot of minutes in the JV game and 2 other JV players played significant minutes in the first half. Was just wondering what happened to them at Minford since it was my first time seeing them play.

Was missing Dennis in that game, which is a pretty big piece, however, the way Minford was rolling, don't think it would have mattered.

Yes, Dennis did play tonight.
They didn't need him, Warren could have won with their JV team tonight.

I'm beginning to think Athens will never beat Warren.

All tables turn in time, been some dandy games, Athens dealt some tough luck and adversity last couple of years, but they handle themselves well.

That being said, GoBlue

A little sluggish in the 1st half for Minford, but strong defensive and offensive effort in the 2nd half. Minford scored 45 points in the 2nd half, and had great balanced scoring. Minford had 5 in double figures, and nearly a 6th. Kelley, Rowe, Gullett, Shepherd, and Dalton all scored in double figures, and Alley added 8 points. Great job by all .

I believe the last victory Athens enjoyed over Warren was during the 2003-2004 season. If you count tournament and regular season games , the total is like 0-28.

Agree Minford 17,
Second showed how dangerous Minford will be in the tourney, I left the game impressed with the way they had multiple players score.

Athens had six DIVISION I athletes on a team and couldn't beat Warren - not sure how the table ever will turn if you can't beat em with that group.

Ibi Watston (Michigan)
Joe Burrow (Ohio State)
Ryan Luehrman (Ohio University)
Adam Luehrman (Ohio University)
Zacciah Saltzmen (Georgetown)
Griffin Lutz (TBD)

Athens was (19-1) one year with 2 small college basketball players (Corey Butcher & Collin Pfaff) - and a really good 6'4 forward in Frank Valantour - and could not beat Warren.

The Warren 'system' and their ability to play 'TEAM' basketball is the Bulldogs kryptonite. They can't overcome it. Not only that, the fundamentals Warren plays with is phenomenal. I don't know what age they learn them - or how Maddox gets his kids to play that way - but they are darn near perfect at it. Ball movement, screens, back door cuts, bounce passes, passes with purpose, always finding the open man, etc ... etc ... As a true basketball fan, and fan of kids playing fundamentally sound, I actually find Warren incredibly entertaining to watch.

,,, But that doesn't mean I like the Warriors!!!

28 times? I must have missed 18 of them. I think it's 10 straight. I'm sure Athens holds the all time series. Warren won its first title ever in 2005. Warren has been very good the last 10 years

Hell we haven't beat Logan in football since 93bulldog was in school

... nice post 93dog ! ... you know that I too like nothing better than fundamentally sound basketball ... I don't care who is playing if they know how to play the game - I'm smiling ... I'm happy ... the game was worth watching ... I talked with Coach Stiverson of LE when they played Washington CH at the Reservation in LE ... I told him that his kids were having a great season ... that I have always enjoy watching his TEAMS ... that his teams are the way they are because he & Coach Holbert are teachers of the game - not just coaches ... his kids ALL know how to play the game of basketball/they "understand" the game, understand why they are doing what they do on the court ... it's this beauty of the game, the product of a system that teaches "the game" of basketball that keeps me watching the Coach Maddox's, the Stiversons, Davis's, Combs's, Hoops's, Persin's , Barricks's & etc. courtside - I KNOW that they ALWAYS have quality teams with kids who KNOW/UNDERSTAND the game of basketball ...

... great post 93dog

You left out 'Caldwell's', Floyd ... lol

What he did - and is doing - at Trimble is nothing short of amazing. Took a group of players who played one way - and in less than a year had them playing the right way ... from .500 the year before - to a 22-0 regular season under him. Again, amazing.

I believe a great deal of the credit for Warren's success can be attributed to the program's Middle School coach, Rod Padgett. Coach Padgett does a great job getting his players to play fundamental TEAM basketball. He runs drills like those run in high school and impresses upon his players the importance of staying within the system. He coaches them to play to their strengths while strengthening their weaknesses. Coach Padgett's success has resulted in a number of Washington County basketball championships for both 7th and 8th grades including two or three teams that went undefeated through BOTH 7th and 8th grades. When Coach Maddox gets these players at the high school, the players already have a fairly firm grasp of what team basketball is all about and tend to be very coachable. Coach Padgett is Warren's little known "secret weapon" who provides the system with players coached to continue BIG BLUE success.

... warriornation123 - I agree 100% about Coach Padgett ... not only an excellent coach/teacher of the game he emphasizes fundamentals/TEAM over "W's" - the W's come with good fundamentals & TEAM ... he doesn't let the best athletes "slide by" he does it the way it should be done - makes those gifted athletes just as fundamentally sound as the good players that he makes better because of the skills he works on ... gotta love "systems" like this ... AND besides being a quality coach/teacher of the middle school youngsters Coach Padgett is a heck of a nice guy !!! ...

Here are the facts:

1.) Coach Padgitt has taken care of the young players at Warren for well over 2 decades.

2.) He works year round for the basketball program and for all the kids at Warren Middle School.

3.) For over a decade, he coached girls jr. high (when it was in the fall) and then the boys in the winter.

4.) He coaches both the 7th and 8th grade teams and he know the names (and the parent's names) of all the 5th and 6th graders coming up.

5.) He operates open gym in the spring/ summer / fall, and participates in middle school summer leagues.

6.) He is a first class man and a first class coach who gives 100 times more than he receives.

And I could list another 25 things that I admire about him and his work ethics / integrity. I know this first hand as he handed me J.V. players for 15 years while I was at Warren with Coach Maddox who were ready to compete and be successful.

He also know how to catch bass, and he knows the name and has dined at every steak house in a 100 mile radius of Barlow.

Here is to great health and many more years of hoops!

Coach Duckworth
