All Clay players return for next year. The league has a strong group of juniors this year. Hope for better result in those big league games. Will encourage them to work hard this summer. Outdoor blacktop games to start with. lolbbjunky81 wrote:I agree. They won the league last year and only lost a couple role players. Those role players are" Indians of a team". To many chiefs sometimes and no Indians makes for bad chemistry. Hope they get it worked out.bbjunky81 wrote:I agree. Vinton County 54
Warren 52 final
IF you are a fan of boys high school hoops , tonight’s matchup between Warren & Vinton County in the Logan D2 Sectional had ALL of the potential to be a barnburner/slugfest/white knuckler/slobber knocker – any one of the cliché’s you want to dust off and throw on a computer screen – it was going to be a good one … TVC vs SEOAL … 2 great coaches in Coach Combs (VC) and Coach Maddox (WHS) … both champions of their respective leagues … two of the best high school basketball programs in the SouthEast District … a gym packed with passionate fans on both sides of the court … it was more than appropriate that the outcome was not decided until the final 2.6 seconds – from my perch in the Cheap Seats it added up to a darn near “perfect” game for any fan of the game …
On paper, I had VC the favorite in this one – imo the inside BIGS for VC would be a major factor in this - physically stronger than Warren in the paint … I felt that VC had MORE perimeter scorers than Warren (Bartoe/Jones/Albright/Yates) … and VC had Mr. Tristan Bartoe – a kid that handles the ball as well as anyone, can get into the paint/to the rim better than anyone in SEOhio … in my little mind, Warren would have to score from the perimeter – Dennis, Hall, Gandee had to have a big “perimeter” night – if they did it would negate the interior game of the VC BIGS by committee – Wood/McIntre/Caudill … IF Coach Combs’ troops were hitting on all cylinders Warren would be in trouble … at the game I found out that Caudill is out for the season/McIntre was in street clothes … “write it down – game on ! with 2 of the 3 BIGS out for VC this was going to be a tight one” – darned if I wasn’t right on the money – closer than close … a great game was seen by everyone in attendance … congratulations to both teams/coaches/fans for both sides – high school hoops/one & done season – Perfect …
… Quarter number one had the Vikings throwing the first punches Derrick Jones/ Jordan Albright and Tristan Bartoe staked VC to the early 10-2 lead at the 3:56 mark of the 1st … Bartoe showed his entire repertoire hitting his patented floater in the paint for 2 pts. followed by a triple and bookended with a drive to the rim (7 pts in the quarter) … Warren won the last 3:56 seconds of the 1st outscoring VC 7-2 to finish the quarter Vinton County 12 Warren 9 after one …
… Quarter 2 saw Vikings Albright & Bartoe BOTH pickup their 2nd foul … both spent minutes on the bench … while the Viking duo shared time on the bench Warren fought back into the game led by Bryce Gandee’s 7 point 2nd period (10 in the half) … 4 points by Warren 6-6 junior Chase Weihl and a triple from Kyler Dennis in the Warrior final possession of the half … VC shared the wealth in the period - Jones with 3/ Bartoe added 4 pts. and off the bench Naylon Yates hit 5 points in the 2nd … a key napkin stat in the quarter was VC went 2/2 from the FT line while Warren was 1 for 4 from the line … Vinton County 26 Warren 24 at intermission …
Quarter #3 … saw Vinton Co. jump out to its’ biggest lead at 33-26 with 3:54 to play in the quarter – Naylen Yates continued to be the man as the 6th man hit 7 points in the quarter … Warren however reeled the Vikings back in behind Luke Drayer (6 pts) & Chase Weihl (4 pts) with a chip in trey by Kyler Dennis 3 pts … the key FT napkin stat – Warren 0 for 4 in the 3rd … Warren 37 Vinton County 36 end of 3 …
… the final period was what keeps us Cheap Seat guys coming back in the post season … both teams knowing that there are only 8 minutes left to decide “Who will be the last team standing after 8 more minutes?” … Warren had senior Luke Drayer (8 pts in the quarter) trying to carry the team to one more win & a “next” game … VC’s Derrick Jones drilled 2 big time 3 balls (8 pts in the quarter) … VC’s BIG MAN in the middle came up BIG in the final period … he was the dominating presence in the paint I thought he would be (8 points for the game) but EVERY ONE of the 8 points were BIG BIG buckets – on put backs at crucial times for VC … the final period was played tight at both ends … at the 2 minute mark the scoreboard showed VC 48 Warren 48 … at 1:38 Kyler Dennis hit a triple to give Warren a 3 point 51-48 advantage … :53 to play the game was tied 52-52 … Warren ball … easy to say AFTER the game but the Warriors instead of going for the final shot elected to go for the lead with :34 left … a drive by Luke Drayer who had been money getting to the rim all night had his shot roll off the back of the rim … VC with the board and the ball … Bartoe across the midcourt stripe time out Vinton with 17 ticks on the clock … advantage Vinton – the arguably BEST “one on one” pg in SEOhio on the court … I jotted down on my napkin stat sheet “Bartoe to the rim … make or to the FT line” … I was half right – Bartoe did take the ball to the rim (check) … this is why I’m in the cheap seats and not courtside – Bartoe took it into the paint – drawing 2 defenders/ instead of going up for the shot Bartoe fed the waiting BIG MAN Chase Wood for an easy 2 points … Vinton up 2 points … with 2.6 seconds to play Warren put up a prayer from mid court … Vinton County 54 Warren 52 a final …
… Pfloyd’s Official “unofficial” Napkin Stats – Warren …
Scoring …Luke Drayer 18, Chase Weihl 11, Bryce Gandee 10, Kyler Dennis 9 , Seth Hall 3, Josh Huffman 1 …
3 Pointers … 5/15 … Kyler Dennis 3, Bryce Gandee 2
FT’s … 3/11
TO’s … 10
… Warren hit the outside shots they needed to hit 5/15 from downtown … Coach Maddox’s boys did a great job holding their own in the paint giving up only 8 points to Wood – perfect … the Warrior D kept Bartoe controlled/ foul trouble/ out of the paint all night (Hall stole the ball twice from Bartoe) … Chase Wood hit 4 “BIG SHOTS” for the game – put backs at key points in the game to keep VC from falling behind WHS by more than 1 possession PLUS the game winner on the assist from Bartoe to end the game … all night Warren had hands on the ball defensively – any ball going inside was scratched/clawed at by multiple sets of hands forcing multiple TOs by VC … the killer tonight for Warren FT's ... 3/11
… Pfloyd’s Official “unofficial” Napkin Stats – Vinton County …
Scoring … Tristan Bartoe 15, Naylen Yates 14, Derrick Jones 13, Chase Wood 8, Jordan Albright 4

… Congratulations to the Vikings … well played game at both ends of the court … another Key Napkin stat besides Warren going 3/11 from the FT line … was Vinton’s bench vs Warren’s bench :
VC’s bench Naylen Yates/Caleb Montgomery 14 points
vs
Warren’s bench of Josh Huffman 1 point …
Best of luck to Vinton County as they will take on the winner of Unioto/Chillicothe at Basketball Thirty at the Convo next Friday night (2/26) at 6:15pm …

Seen chillicothe escape with a win against circlville last week ,chilli is quick and the Barnes boys are tough .....but they are sons of a great Trojan player so no surprise lol....this should be a great game I'm picking chillicothe for the win.
Best play off game I've seen so far was last night at waverly with Adena and westfall going toe to toe for a while before Adena pulled away for a 18 point lead at one time in the third only to have westfall get back to 2 in the 4th and ended up losing by around 9 . to bad the hall kid is not with Adena anymore with him they could beat anyone . good luck to all teams

River Mullins #22 for Lynchburg is a Sophomore and is fun to watch. When he gets loose he throws down some impressive dunks. I think they have three very smart Seniors in Blankenship,Pierson ,and their big guy. Giogardo Is a junior and they have a big kid 6'7" Stroup kid who is getting better. I think he's a Junior. The other kid ,I think # 12 always plays really well against us. Pretty deep and very long team. When they are clicking they are tough to beat.biggdowgg wrote:Rodeo1 wrote:Congrats to Eastern Brown and Lynchburg Clay on your big wins. Good luck at the Convo. Unioto 48
Chillicothe 42 final
... "THE REMATCH" ... Chillicothe 64 Unioto 61 was LAST week's regular season final as the Cavs ended the Shermans' 55 game regular season win streak at Hatton Gymnasium ... as Coach Hoops for UHS said before the game tonight THIS is like the Duke vs N. Carolina rivalry BUT the 2 teams here are closer in proximity than the North Carolina interstate foes ... Tonights game had the drama of any "next level" tourney game - the winner moves on while the loser goes home ... one and done ... survive and advance ... however you say it or look at it THIS was a BIG game of D2 , interstate/county/almost intercity teams - the stakes being a D2 sectional championship and a gold ticket to the Convo in Athens next week to take on Vinton County in the first D2 District Semi- final game ... sometimes these "part 2" games don't live up to their billing - not so tonight as neither team ran away and hid ... Chillicothe jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on two Kristian Boltenhouse inside shots at the rim ... game on ! - the crowd was INTO the game ... UHS answered with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good , never to be behind the entire game ... Boltenhouse had 6 points in the quarter for the Cavs while the Shermans found Erique Hosley for 8 points in the paint ... add another 5 points by teammate Gabe Fisher ... the quarter ended Unioto 17 Chillicothe 10 after one ... Quarter 2 was a "wash" as both teams matched offensive output - both putting up 11 points in the 2nd frame ... Unioto got 2 buckets down low from Isaac "Bubba" Wheeler while the Cavs spread the wealth - Boltenhouse/Jordan Johnson/Matthew Benson with 2 each ... Unioto 28 Chillicothe 21 going into intermission ...
... In quarter 3 - Chillicothe shaved off 2 points from the Sherman lead ... Jordan Johnson drained a pair treys from behind the arc & Nathan Rosenbauer picked up his only points of the night on an old fashioned bucket & 1 ... UHS showed their hand by going into the paint to Wheeler for 3 third quarter buckets /Hosley added a bucket from the opposite side of the lane ... Unioto 36 Chillicothe 31 end of 3 ...
... the final 8 minutes saw the Shermans get separation - pushing the lead to 45-35 with 3:18 remaining with Wheeler/Hosley accounting for 3 in the paint baskets ... UHS would score only 3 more points the rest of the way on 3/4 FT shooting by Kennedy/Edler down the stretch ... Chilli would get the score to 38-45 at the 1:25 mark ... where it remained until Seth Barnes knocked down a triple from the corner to draw CHS to 41-45 ... the final points for either side were from the FT stripe as Unioto ran out the clock ... Unioto 48 Chillicothe 42 a final ...

Boltenhouse never touched the ball in the final 8 minutes other than at the foul line ... Unioto forced 2 Cavs turnovers to open the final 8 minutes - the Shermans made the Cavs pay both times with buckets on the offensive end stretching their 5 point lead at the end of the 3rd to 9 points after the opening 2 possessions of the 4th ...

Erique Hosley had a double double on the night - 12 points /15 rebounds ... let's add a monster block that looked like a hockey team icing the puck late in the game as the UHS Big Man swatted a shot attempt 3/4 court ... Cole Cottrill was in uniform tonight ! warmed up with his TEAM - took part in the pregame dunkfest by the Shermans ... I talked to CC briefly after the game - he is chomping at the bit to get back on the court ... best of luck to the Shermans of Coach Hoops as they take on Vinton County at the Convo Friday evening at 6:15 pm in the D2 District opener ! ...

Re: Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio - Final Edition
One team out of 16 possible scored over 50 points at Southeastern. That's some serious defense being played.
Re: Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio - Final Edition
Good defense and some horribly tight rims.

Coach Persin ALMOST got me my 2nd Cinderella story in D3 as he and the Oaks were a tough out for the youngsters of Coach Speed & Fairland ... fun stuff - I like trying to analyze what I've seen, trends going into the post season and seeing if I can come up with a possible "cinderella" play in for the Convo ... lovin' it !pfloyd wrote:On another thread - it was asked who were the Cinderella teams in D3 who have a chance to get to the Convo ... this was my response :
... I would say that these D3 Cinderella teams have a chance to make the trip to Basketball Thirty - would it be a surprise ? absolutely as they would need to have taken down an "on paper" favored team to earn their "golden ticket" :
Either Paint Valley or Eastern Brown would be a Cinderella appearance in the Convo as they would have to 1) get by each other 2) more than likely get by Portsmouth to earn their ticket ... Paint Valley has Dylan Swingle inside (6-8+) with his double/double game and Anthony McFadden's streaky outside shooting ... should PV get by EB the size inside could get them to the Convo with a one game win over Portsmouth ... Eastern Brown is your on court definition of TEAM (TJ Stivers/Marcus Day/ Nick Kelch/ Heath Unger/Mickey Hundley/Austin Doss/Charles Bellamy/Blake Rigdon) ...no stars but a collection of good high school basketball players who are coached by one of the best in the business in Coach Beucler ... it will be a difficult task to beat the size of PV to get to a game with Portsmouth that would give them a chance to get to the Convo BUT if they do survive the PV "big man" ... they will be all PHS can handle (PHS beat EB by 8 ... 64-56 in their midseason matchup) in the "play in game" to the Convo trip ...
Oak Hill ... the Oaks have Coach Persin at the helm - need I say more ? , they already eliminated South Point (which I had as a surprise winner in their matchup on paper) ... now the Oak Hill gang needs to get by a loaded Fairland team ... when you have Coach Persin courtside with his towel - a win over the Dragons would be a BIG surprise but not out of the question ... a win would make them a Cinderella story though in my book ...
Southeastern ... Coach Cox already guided the Panthers over the first hurdle with a W over Zane Trace in round 1 of the Waverly sectional ... Rd 2 has Southeastern taking on Lucasville Valley ... Valley IS a top 5 team Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line BUT they lost to Minford this past weekend while SE has won their last 2 outings (a double OT win over McClain to end the regular season , then last night's win over Zane Trace) throw in that they played the SEOhio #1 team Unioto to a very close 66-63 loss ... lots of confidence on the SE side of the court right now - seniors Justin Dye/Austin Kohn/Tyler Carroll would like nothing better than to make the trip to A'town ... would a Southeastern W be an upset ? absolutely BUT this IS the high school hoops one & done season ... no one gets style points , the goal is to survive and advance ... Southeastern definitely has an opportunity to move on to Basketball Thirty imo ...
... imo those are the D3 teams that have a legitimate chance at Cinderella status/underdogs BUT good enough to win their way to the Convo as well ...

This was confirmed by a maintenance man that works there, one of the rims is actually set higher than 10 feet. Not sure why it's never been fixed.Bronc21 wrote:Good defense and some horribly tight rims.
Between that and Logan not letting teams cut down the nets, the D2 hosts have some splainin to do

Nobody has ever cut down the nets at Jim Meyers. I remember questioning it after Athens beat LE Burrow's freshman year.

Didn't understand why they couldn't cut the nets down either. It's not like Logan didn't make enough money over the week to buy a couple of nets.
Congratulations to the Falcons
