Seems like a bad idea to me. In the end, all the schools compete with 15-18 year olds. No reason to exclude some kids from the party.

Personally I think that the Catholic or private schools have an unfair advantage in being able to basically recruit and hand-pick athletes. I understand both views but I am against the private schools competing with public schools

That's never going to happen.
Not all Catholic schools recruit and lots of public schools recruit.
A better option would be for the ohssa to enforce their rules more fairly.

We play Newark Catholic every year and it is a great series. We get a decent amount of points when we beat them and they are great competition.route7 wrote:Personally I think that the Catholic or private schools have an unfair advantage in being able to basically recruit and hand-pick athletes. Anyone think Portsmouth Notre Dame should get kicked out of OHSAA??
Or for that matter Ironton St Joe's? Heard they're wreaking havoc in the SE Region in baseball, soccer, basketball.

Notre Dame and St. Joe are not your typical catholic school. There numbers are very small and majority of the public schools they play do beat them. ND and St. Joe very rarely have teams year in and year out than just win, it comes in cycles. Luckily ND has had a couple good classes these last few years but in the mid 2000's they were not very good. Baseball was the only sport that was producing wins. Taking the catholic schools out of the OHSAA would hurt the smaller catholic schools that can not produce numbers year in and year out.

Not every catholic school nor private schools recruit or hand-pick athletes. Bigger catholic / private schools give the smaller schools a bad rep.

I swear every month someone brings this up. Give it a break. Why would you kick them out of the OHSAA? Because private schools recruit? False, I would honestly say less than 5% of the private schools in Ohio go out and recruit. Heck, I guarantee more public schools do that than private schools.

I would agree with those Raider. Like I said, has to be less than 5%, but I don't know of the exact numbers.

The list left off --
Elder
Dayton Carroll
Dayton Chaminade
Walsh Jesuit
Warren JFK
VASJ
Lima CC
Canton CC
and a few girls schools.
Most real small Catholic schools are harmless as they have no endowments or deep pockets alumni that fund "schollies". Simply , many do recruit but many don't.

Not sure who'd complain about St Charles unless we're talking about Chess Team and Latin Club.

I think in the effort of being fair they should be separated private and public

ironton would likely have 6 state titles had they not ran into these buzzsaws of private schools instead of 2.

Re: Catholic Schools out of OHSAA- Would it be more fair to public schools?
I'm all for a competitive balance formula being passed. That would level the playing field for public and private schools who are at a disadvantage for varying reasons. However, booting private schools out because you can't beat certain ones is just silly.
