There is no cross over play in the GCL. The GCL South is the Div I schools and the GCL North is the smaller schools. There is no cross over play in the league.

I had a conversation with a superintendent a while back that was an assistant basketball coach for years. They played against one of the Catholic schools in Columbus. He knows Ross personally. When he complained about how this is fair he was told that they were trying to level the playing field without running the Catholic schools off. The OHSAA fears that if they separate the Privates and Publics that the Privates will split from the OHSAA causing even more problems.

The OHSAA wants control. I could see this. They don't want spring football for instance. If they split you could have "football and basketball factories" like St Thomas Aquinas pop up allover the state. Kids will go there for exposure. It would then hurt the other schools and cause a domino effect.

One problem with removing private schools from the OHSAA is that there are still public schools who get top players from the surrounding communities. Huber Heights Wayne gets many of the top talent from surrounding schools such as Trotwood. I'm not sure if Wayne actually recruits but the very talented players know they get much more exposure at Wayne and decide to transfer.

I don't think it is about "power" for the OHSAA. They have a task to administer high school athletics in Ohio and would like to do it for all. Turning their back on a small portion of their member schools is not the best way to do that.

If they separate the Private and Public then you better believe the Private schools will leave the OHSAA. Some of the smaller ones might find it difficult but the bigger ones will be gone in a heartbeat. The bottom line is simple catch the schools that cheat regardless if its Private or Public and penalize them. This thread has gotten beat to death on here for years, if you have proof a school cheats call the OHSAA. As far as one poster here you need to remember your alma mater benefited for years from Catholic students who left their Catholic school.

knightrunner: Thanks for the correction......I do know in the past that they have played crossover games in basketball. I looked up the hoops standings of the GCL South and there were a total of 6 league games, which would include the 4 schools playing the other 3 schools twice.

Roger Bacon made the 2014 state basketball tournament, and I looked at their schedule in the state tournament program. They did play Cincinnati Moeller in the regular season. The GCL South and North don't play crossover games in football.

There are few Private schools that cheat. But they are there. We are fortunate that that they don't exist in the Southeast part of the state so teams can compete for a Regional title fairly, unless of course they extend the region to Columbus. But on most Divisions you will run into one if you go far enough. And it only takes one. Team may be the best "Legal" team in the state and get knocked out in the state semi's by the best team money can buy and it isn't fair. But they will do nothing about it.
