Nelsonville-York Football History
Fogive me if I misspell some names, but to watch that 81 three-headed offensive monster of Bishop, Woodson, and Galiteen was fun to do. Mays just roamed from tackle to tackle shutting down Trimble's running game featuring 1,000 rusher Bruce Fouts. That 81 game shows classic Boston wear-you-down football. Tough Defense and a solid running game. Woodson in the second-half seems to get stronger as the minutes run out.
Being from Trimble of course my goal is to find a copy of the 1980 Trimble-Nelsonville York game. The films of the 1980 season that I got from Mike Roback (Ed Bolin's copies) did not have the tenth game (sent off to a college and not returned) I've heard an unconfirmed rumor that there is a Channel 5 version that remains. I would love to get a copy of.
Good luck to the Buckeyes against Alexander, and best wishes to those of you attempting to launch a Nelsonville-York history website.

I remember well the 1980 team from Trimble, and I am sure most of the Buckeye faithful still suffer from nightmares of Mike Roeback
He was a heck of a QB, but what I really remember about him is he could kick the CRAP out of the football
I was just a kid and a manager for the 1980-1981 games, but I still remember them fondly. There were some VERY impressive athletes playing in those games.

1. Saying Nelsonville instead of Nelsonville-York. (Pisses off everyone outside of Nelsonville)

If someone did a radio or tv broadcast and said "Todays game between the Nelsonville Buckeyes and ____ at Boston Field in Buchtel".....He might need an armed escort to his car.
Actually the Buchtel thing doesn't bother me at all. A few posters have started calling us the Buchtel Buckeyes and for some reason think that should bother us. Don't really get that. For the record, raised in Nelsonville and have never lived in Buchtel.

I started researching NY football scores on microfilm of the Athens Messenger at Alden Library. I have 14 seasons compiled as of right now. 27 to go!
Here are a few fun facts that stick out in my head.....
NY's first ever football game was at Warren and NY won 22-6.
The 1970 NY vs. Logan season opening game at Logan drew nearly 4,000 fans to the game. (And this is an example of how big this rivalry was because NY went 0-10 in 1969, so at that time, it wasn't like it was a clash of dominating teams of southeastern Ohio).
NY had a SEOAL league record of 1-19, with the one win coming against Wellston.

NYBuckeye96 and any others,
My father-in-law (Nelsonville Greyhound class of '66) literally has TONS of information on history of NY and the TVC in general (as well as some area stuff with Logan, Athens, and the like). Anyone interested email me at [email protected] and I'll give you his email address.

Buckeye96,
Yearbooks are a good source to determine the opposition for a given year, but the scores are generally not always accurate. Verify everything with a second source and you will be a happy man with the finished product.
I have so much stuff on the TVC that I am more than willing to share. I have all scores and game dates of every TVC game played to date. I have a copy of every All-Conference football team ever selected. I still have not seen the 2007 Hocking TVC team, so that is missing.
As an example of the stuff I have, in regards to N-Y prior to 2007 season,
there were a total of 159 N-Y players designated All-TVC a total of 207 times. This included 117 named for one season, 36 honored for two seasons and 6 so selected three years. None have been named four years.
N-Y (without 2007 included) played 214 TVC football games with a record of 165-46-3 which is a .778 winning average.
It's all here for the sharing, but maybe you would rather dig it out for yourself. I can understand that too. If you ever need anything verified, let me know.

Thanks. I'll definately use your info. for the TVC games. However, I still need to research the non-league games, such as NY vs. Athens, etc. Every season had anywhere between 2-6 nonleague games.
Here is something interesting I have found.....the only team NY has played every season since the 1967 consolidation is Vinton County. NY played Vinton County as a nonleague game in '67, '68, and '69 and then started playing Vinton County as a TVC game in '70. So the Buckeyes and Vikings would now have 41 games in the books. Belpre and Trimble are tied for second, each having played NY every year since 1970 for a total of 38 games.

Buckeye96,
We have played you every year except in 1973 when VC was on strike. We only played four games that season.
You will also note that we did in fact play N-Y on a Thursday (11/17) in 1977. The game was originally scheduled for 11/4 but your school was closed down on that date. I think N-Y district was having financial problems at that time. Anyway we graciously agreed to play the game after the conclusion of the season and you ungraciously kicked our butts 45-0. No mercy I guess.

Wow, how ironic....I researched seasons 1972-1977 today and seen what you just posted!
Those 1973 Vikings owe NY a home game! I say let them play! The players would all be in their 50s now. Come up to Boston Field and play it now! We can have a few ambulances on standby! Or, play it at the old Polley Field where it would have been played in '73. ;)
The most interesting fact I found today was from 1974, as NY had three games that ended in 0-0 ties!!! Trimble, Alexander, and Warren all played NY to a 0-0 tie in 1974. Is this football or soccer?
The 1970's must have been a bad time for school districts because the Messenger had several articles about teacher strikes at various schools in the area.
I now have season scores for 1967-1977, 1992-1995, and 2002-2007.

This afternoon, I researched seasons 1978-1984.
Highlights:
Furthest traveled for an away game - 1978 - @ Alliance. The Aviators won 7-6. (This game replaced Logan on the schedule that season, as Logan was on strike).
And obviously the '81 undefeated State Champions and '82 State Semifinalist seasons are a major highlight. NY won 24 straight games during that stretch.
When NY defeated Logan in 1981, it was the first win against Logan for the Buckeyes, and the first win for Nelsonville in 25 years, since 1956. The 1956 win was the first win for Nelsonville over Logan in 26 years, dating back to 1930! Would the Buckeyes go another quarter century without a win over Logan? Nope. They followed up the 1981 win with another win over Logan in 1982. How awesome it must have been for the fans of NY to defeat the Chieftans after that long history of losses by past Buckeye and Greyhound squads.

I only have 6 seasons left to research! 1996-2001. After that, I will have all of NY Buckeye Football history recorded!!!
The biggest highlight that sticks out from the seasons I researched today was in 1991 when NY hosted Columbus Bishop Ready. The Silver Knights were highly ranked in their region at the time, and many people picked Ready to win this game. The Buckeyes came away with a 20-14 victory and shocked a lot of people!!! The Silver Knights had dominated the central Ohio catholic schools in the early season and the Buckeyes came out with the win.
The game came in Week 9 and was played because the NY versus Wellston game had been cancelled. In the spring of 1991, Wellston informed the TVC schools that they had budget problems and might not be able to field a football team in the fall of '91. It turned out that the Wellston Athletic Boosters raised enough money to put forth a team. However, by that time, the TVC schools had already signed contracts with other schools. NY picked up Bishop Ready to replace Wellston that year. Wellston did play football in 1991, but had to play an independant schedule because of the budget situation.
