a. Portsmouth Trojans 1925-1928. In the early years competed against Wellston, Jackson, Logan, Athens, Nelsonville, Gallipolis, Pomeroy, Ironton and New Boston. The Trojans won the 1st and 3rd Basketball Titles while in the SEOAL there first time. Portsmouth won 25 and lost 1 while in the league there first tour. The Trojans dropped out of SEOAL league following 1927-28 season, and came back in the league in 2006. Prior Leagues played in after the SEOAL were; G.O.L. Greater Ohio League. The Trojans were in the G.O.L. from the 40's to 1975. The teams that were in the G.O.L. that competed in that league were, Portsmouth, Middletown, who were rivals to the Trojans, Hamilton, Mansfield in the 50's, Lima Senior and Springfield South. When the G.O.L. league folded in 1975, the only teams left were, Lima Senior, Springfield South, and Portsmouth that remained in the league, while Middletown and Hamilton had left several years earlier. But the 5 schools listed above comprised the membership for the bulk of its existence. It was also a very good league in football. What was amazing about the GOL was that between 1944-1961, this league accounted for 11 BIG school Basketball State Titles, which is a record for any league in Ohio, even to this day. The Columbus City League has 10 state championships. The Greater Catholic League in the Cincinnati area has more state titles, but not more BIG school titles. The Trojans were also in the OKAC (Ohio Kentucky Athletic Conference) The OKAC existed from 1986-1993......and during that time, Portsmouth, Ashland, Boyd Co., and Greenup Co. made the state tournaments in their respective states. It was a very good basketball league, but only a decent football league. It was also very good in baseball, and I believe Boyd Co. won the state while a member of the OKAC. Rarely were there blowouts, even though Portsmouth won the league in basketball from 1987-1991. The Trojans never went through the OKAC undefeated, and that's saying something considering that from 1987-1991 Portsmouth compiled an overall record of 116 wins and 14 losses in basketball. While in the OKAC, the Trojans competed against, Greenup Co., Boyd Co., Russell, Ashland, Kentucky and Ironton being the other Ohio Team. As Trojan Dave added, It was a decent football league, but a very good basketball league, better than the SEOAL is now. The Trojans came back to the SEOAL in 2006.

Fairgrounds Coliseum Regional Tournament (Columbus)
1960-1961 Season

Portsmouth G.O.L. 61 - Cambridge O.V.A.C. 38

The Portsmouth Trojans have won 4 State Championships in Boys Basketball. During the following seasons:
1. 1931 (Independent)
2. 1961 Member of the (G.O.L.) Great Ohio League
3. 1978 (Independent) Portsmouth 63 Cleveland Cathedral Latin 62
4. 1988 Member of the (OKAC) Ohio-Kentucky Athletic Conference
1988--Portsmouth 54, West Geauga 47 (D2 State Champions)

The Portsmouth Trojans have appeared in the OHSAA Final Four Basketball Appearances 13 times. The first three were played by the Trojans while they were in the SEOAL there first time from 1925-1928. The following dates are listed below. The Trojans appeared in the Final Four, the SEOAL Years (1925, 1926 and 1927).

Also in the 1929, 1931 (1st), 1934 (2nd), 1939, 1941, 1961 (1st), 1978 (1st), 1980 (2nd), 1980--Hamilton Ross 45, Portsmouth 44
1988 (1st), and 1990 (2nd) seasons. The Trojans also advanced to the district final 4 straight years from 1999-2002. Portsmouth's total number of district appearances I believe is 58, if I remember correctly from the SE district tourney program. The Trojans have won the district 34 times.

Portsmouth has 34 District and 38 Sectional Championship Basketball Titles. The Trojans made the District Semi-Finals 58 times.
The Trojans won the district in 1990, 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2001.

Portsmouth Trojans verses Chillicothe Cavaliers
The overall series stands at 40-35 in favor of Portsmouth....but the Cavaliers have won the last 8 as of Dec 28, 2007. Don't know the Trojans' record at CHS, though.

This 75th meeting will push Chillicothe into second place all time on Portsmouth's opponents list....the Trojans have only played Ironton more times....in fact, so many, I'm not sure of the exact number....I think it's around 125 times. Portsmouth has played Ashland(KY) 74 times, and lead that series 46-28. Not bad against Kentucky's all time winningest program.

The last SEOAL change came when Chillicothe from the OCC-Capital, Zanesville, Portsmouth and Ironton were added. The Plains Athens leaves for the TVC-Ohio in joining former fellow-SEOAL Charter Members, Nelsonville-York, Wellston and Meigs. The Bulldogs are leaving the SEOAL after the 2008 season for the TVC-Ohio. The Plains Athens Bulldogs leads the SEOAL in Basketball Titles with 19.

Class B Championship Game
Lockland Wayne 56 Greyhounds 46

The Final Four win was the biggest win in Greyhounds basketball history for a couple reasons. First, it was the only Final Four win for the Greyhounds. Also, Waynesburg was ranked as the number one team in the state of Ohio that season and were picked to win it all by the powers that be. So for those reasons, that was the biggest win in Greyhound basketball history.

Lowell Cole, who still lives in Nelsonville, was the head coach of the Greyhounds at the state tournament.

He also coached elsewhere in the area
Starters for Nelsonville were:

(Forwards)
a. 6-1 John Powell
b. 6-1 Frank Hartley

(Center)
c. 6-2 Bob Pack

(Guards)
d. 5-11 Dick Hubbard
e. 6-0 Sonny Keplar

Not sure what years in school they were John Powell and Dick Hubbard were named to the all-tournament team Other players were Frank Whitmore, Junior McKinley.Melvin Hook, Gene Pritchard and Jerry Figgins.

Going into the state tournament, Hubbard led the team with 341 points and Keplar had 324. Hubbard had 18 points and Keplar 13 -- 31 of the team's points in the 45-43 victory over Waynesburg in the state semifinals.

In the championship game, Lockland Wayne defeated Nelsonville 56-46 Powell had 12 points and Hubbard 10 for Nelsonville.

There was a comment about Nelsonville being a village. It is a city which requires population of at least 5,000 -- the total has been met hrough the years. At one time, even though Athens was the county seat and was the home of Ohio University (since 1804), Nelsonville had a larger population than Athens in the early years, partly because of all the coal miners.

EIGHT OCC CONFERENCE ADDITION

June 14, 1999
Mr. Peterson. Chairman, The Alignment Committee unanimously voted to recommend that Whitehall Yearling be withdrawn from competition in football in the fall of 2000. This recommendation would not eliminate Whitehall from competing in all other OCC athletics and activities.

This recommendation permits all Capital Division schools to enter a two year contract with the school that replaces Whitehall on their schedule. This recommendation also allows the Cardinal and Capital divisions to continue to play their crossover games.

Moved by Rick Dill, second by Robert Thompson, to approve the above report as presented. Motion passed. Yes 24, No 0. 2 absent.

Moved by Mr. Scott Prebles, second by Mr. Mike Smith, to approve an 8, 6, 6, 6 divisional alignment for the OCC beginning in the 2002-03 school year with the following divisional alignment.

Mr. Workman, Chairman of the Alignment Committee, reviewed the proposed divisional alignment for the 2004-5 2005-6 seasons.

Mr. Workman stated that the Committee was aware that the proposed alignment is in violation of the enrollment concept but felt that there was no other choice because of the more important “sister school” concept. Proposed alignment is shown below.

Trojan Dave,
Can you give me the info concerning the old GOL Teams Portsmouth played against and the years they were in that league and I'll add it to the PortsmoutH other leagues played in on here.

Likewise who all was in the OHKYAL and what dates the league began and ended. I'll add that to the Portsmouth and Ironton other leagues played in section on here.

Marietta Posters,
Did Marietta play in a league after the COL folded or was that there only league prior to joining the SEOAL? I know Chillicothe left the COL at the end of the 1976 Football Season. What year did the COL fold?

Thanks Army

Class B Final Four
Greyhounds 45 Waynesburg 43

Class B Championship Game

The Final Four win was the biggest win in Greyhounds basketball history for a couple reasons. First, it was the only Final Four win for the Greyhounds. Also, Waynesburg was ranked as the number one team in the state of Ohio that season and were picked to win it all by the powers that be. So for those reasons, that was the biggest win in Greyhound basketball history.

Hey noreply...your not nearly that age but you may know.......What school in your area did Neil Hawk play sports for in High School. He was drafted by the Tigers in mid 50's and was in the Guiness Book for golf...I'm guessing as a pretty big guy he played basketball.

Any idea or info on him?
