With an enrollment of 161 students--73 of whom are boys-- Milan High defeats powerhouse Muncie Central (enrollment 2,200) 32/30 for the Indiana state championship. Such an upset never will be repeated; 43 years later, Indiana schools are grouped into classifications based on enrollment. The story of Milan and star guard Bobby Plump's winning shot becomes the basic for the 1986 film Hoosiers.

The Celtic Dynasty begins when Boston outlasts St. Louis in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, 125/123 in two overtimes. The Celtics are led by rookie Tom Heinsohn (37 points,23 rebounds) and Bill Russell (19 and 32). The Hawk's Bob Pettit shines with 39 points and 19 rebounds, but he misses a layup that would have sent the game into a third OT.

"Havlicek steals the ball"-With five seconds to go in Game 7 of a bitterly contested NBA Eastern Final, the 76ers trail 110/109 but have possession underneath the Celtis' basket. Philly's Hal Greer attempts a lob to Chet Walker, but John Havlicek times his leap perfectly and deflects the ball to Sam Jones, who dribbles out the clock. The radio call by gravel-voiced Celtis anouncer Johnny Most becomes the most memorable in hoops history.
