The refs that worked the sp Fairland game last night were terrible. They made a lot of bad calls against Fairland at crucial times. The short one was the worst watching the tape they made bad calls both ways but a lot more of the calls went against the dragons. Fairland only shot 4 free throws and two of them came on a technical. They were awful...............................

My uncle Homer used to ref in southeastern Ohio before moving to Columbus. He explains it to me this way:

Southeastern Ohio fans, with the possible exception of a few folks from Portsmouth, would be shocked to see good basketball.

You don't need good refs in southeastern Ohio. Teams and players there are not on the level of teams and players elsewhere in the state. Kids are relatively slow and not very talented and play defense with their arms instead of their legs. Lethargic play leads to lethargic refs. Fans who have never seen good basketball think all refs are terrible but it is mostly because they are watching play that is terrible and only mercifully interrupted by the occasional whistle. Look at the record books of past champions and see how many southeastern Ohio teams are listed. Good refs want to see good basketball too, so most will move from southeastern Ohio or will give up the profession.

He did say that Tom Hardy was top notch.

I HAVE SEEN OFFICAL ALL THE WAY BACK IN THE 50 AND THEY WERE GOOD, BUT THIS DAY AND AGE YOU HAVE, JUNIORS HIGH, FRESHMAN. BIDDYBALL ALL THE WAY DOWN IN THE SCHOOLS TO ABOUT 3 OR 4TH GRADE IN BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS. THER ARE NOT ENOUGHT REFEREE TO GO AROUND. IN THE OLD DAYS MOST OF THE REFS. WERE BALL PLAYERS, BUT IT NOT LIKE THAT ANY MORE. YOU GO TO COLLEGE AND TAKE A COURSE AND MOST OF IT IS ON PAPER AND WOWIE YOU A REF. AND HAVE NEVER EVEN PLAYED A HIGH SCHOOL BALL GAME. I HAVE BEEN GOING TO A LOT OF S.O.C. GAMES AND THIS DAY AND AGE THEY USE 3 REFS INSTEAD OF 2 AND THE REFEREES ARE BAD. THERE ARE A FEW GOOD ONES. THE BASKETBALL IN SOUTHERN OHIO IS GOOD, I HAVE SEEN IT ALL OVER THE STATE. WHEN YOU GET UP NORTH YOU HAVE BIGGER SCHOOL AND A LOT OF GOOD BALL PLAYERS DON'T GET A CHANCE TO PLAY. DOWN SOUTH IN OHIO WE HAVE SMALLER SCHOOLS AND A LOT OF KIDS GET TO PLAY AND I THINK THAT IS A LOT BETTER. I THINK THE REFEREE NEED TO BE LOOK AT BUY SOME ONE THAT KNOWS ABOUT REFEREE NOT A COLLEGE PROFESSOR AND TAKING WITTEN TEST BUT LOOKED AT ON A BASKETBALL COURT. JUST ONE OLD MANS OPINION

I seriously doubt that officials move so they can officiated "better basketball". Anyone who says something like that is a little too self-important if you ask me.

for all of you complainers i am sure there is room in the next officials classes for all of you. more are retiring, therefore, more new ones are needed and many of you guys can do such a good job up in the bleachers that you are always welcome to come on down to the floor and show your stuff. of course as soon as you do that you will become one of the five dumbest guys in the gym with the other two officials and the two head coaches.

gahs4ever wrote:Oh, I dont know mhs. The Columbus City League as a whole has been comparatively weak with the rest of Franklin County, but Beechcroft recently went to Columbus about four years in a row because they were fortunate to be sent to the Athens regional. The OCC and Catholic league put out some quality teams as well, and a couple of years ago I was privileged to see the South Webster-Wothington Christian regional final at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, and I thought those were the two best teams in the state at their level.

Marietta always seems to run into a brick wall when they are sent up I77; something Ive always thought unfair to the Tigers. Heck of a long way to go for a sectional if you ask me.

Couple of years ago the Columbus Dispatch ran an article (unrelated to sports) about how Columbus City School students can freely transfer to any other school by simply jumping on a COTA bus and go to any school they choose. The discussion on one chat forum after that article ran was about how the athletes transfer within the Columbus City School district to attend certain schools based on sport - for example, good basketball players would go to Beechcroft, or this year Northland, good football players to Watterson, etc. These are basically all-star teams compiled from within the Columbus City Schools. I don't know about where you live, but there is no public transportation in Highland County that would permit kids to do this. The city league schools do not play good basketball IMO, it is blacktop trash. I would much rather see Chillicothe v. Wheelersburg, or Logan Elm v. Circleville, or Hillsboro v. McClain, then any city league game. IMO these teams are "teams" not compilations of athletes who do their own thing. I would much rather watch good defense then none at all. I like to see a player use good form, square his shoulders, elevate off the ground, and take that 10 foot jump shot of the board instead of bulling his way inside and throwing up a prayer hoping to get fouled. I like to see all five players get in the action on the offensive end and work for a good shot instead of one or two players hotdogging it by throwing up junk.

I agree with you about Putnam County up in northwest Ohio. If I'm not mistaken you've got teams like Patrick Henry, Liberty-Benton, Coldwater, Delphos St. John, and others I know I'm missing off this list. Some of these teams I listed might not be in Putnam County, but they are close to there.
