I think it should be avoided, if at all possible. I don't know how officials are scheduled, but I'd think if you're an offical, at the very start you'd say "I' have a conflict of interest with such and such team. My son plays for them," and from then on you shouldn't be scheduled to officiate those games.

Usually it is no big deal and the times that I have seen it happen, they have always done an OK job. But it is usually good to avoid the conflict of interest for appearances sake.

But if an official can't make it at the last minute and it is a choice between a certified 'dad-ref' or just one ref, I will take the extra pair of eyes every time.

I think it would be great! Especially if you could get your kid to shave some points and clean up on guys like Webb!  ;-)

personally I think that no ref should officiate at their home school.. I like our refs but just to make everyone happy it should be that way no home town refs.

this should be avoided, but it happens. As for refs staying out of their home schools, if they don't try to mess up the integrity of the game and school then I see no harm in it occurring.

As a note:

1) Big-10 football officials who live in Columbus, Lima, & Dayton Ohio do OSU football games at OSU.

2) NBA officials who live in Canton do Cleveland Cavaliers games in Cleveland.

3) Big-10 basketball officials who live with 30 miles of Indiana University do their games at Indiana.

If these assignments are not a issues & is a common practice, is there a need to worry about low level games in southern Ohio??? :?: :?:

If Chad Henne's dad officiated the OSU Michigan game then there shouldn't be any complaints either right? I just don't think it is right period and the fact that it was a lower level game doesn't justify it happening.

As an umpire , I do not feel it's right to do my son's games . It just would give the wrong impression .

i don't think it should be allowed. and you should not be allowed to ref at schools where you know athletes that play on the team. theres a ref that knows some of the athletes on our team and makes ridiculous calls against them. i don't think it's right but there is nothing you can do about it.

I don't think you should referee/umpire a game at Jr. high or High school level that you are affiliated with. When you do this you are in a no win situation. You can call the best game ever, but someone will see it the other way. Just don't do it!!!

Go watch a high school game tonight or tomorrrow. Those officials have been ASSIGNED to those games no affiliation to the schools and listen to the grief they endure!!
