well, a Warren poster was the one to start knocking the TVC.

I think Warren should look into getting back into the TVC and bring somebody like Marietta with them. That should liven up the Ohio division.

SEOAL
Ironton Fball champs
Portsmouth BBall champs
Gallia girls track state runner up
Warren girls bball state runner up

There are more but I think you get the drift. The SEOAL has more than enough to match the mighty TVC.

Was Ironton and Portsmouth members of the SEOAL when they won the mentioned state titles? I may be wrong but I have my doubts that they were. I will give you the Gallia and Warren girls.

The SEOAL should beat the TVC in a heads up match 80% or more when they play. Bigger schools from bigger towns equals a deeper pool of talent to draw from vs the much smaller city schools and rural schools of the TVC.

Still, the SEOAL doesn't have the success on a much bigger level then the TVC.

Warren left the TVC for 1 reason only, they couldn't make the football playoffs and they were watching Nelsonville and Belpre make the playoffs back in the 1980's. The reason they couldn't make the playoffs, they couldn't beat Nelsonville or Belpre on a regular basis when they were in the TVC. The teams that they had to beat to get the computer points, they couldn't beat them. That was when the top 2 teams in the region made it. Maybe now with the top 8 teams in the region they could if they were back in the TVC. They sure ain't doing it in the SEOAL and their traveling all over God's green acre to do it.

Again I say, if Warren would come back to the TVC under the right circumstances, bringing another large school with them and the TVC was realigned so that schools of the same size played each other, these larger schools, Warren, Vinton, Meigs etc would have a much better chance of not only making the football playoffs, but also inprove their chances of doing better in the state tourney games of all sports.

Since football is the only sport you need to qualify in (computer points) I don't see how joining a D3 and D4 league will get Warren ready to do better in the other sports. Lets see would playing Zanesville and Chillicothe in boys basketball get you ready to play McClain, Logan Elm, Chilli etc or would playing Meigs, Vinton (no more D2 schools) and Belpre. Warren played Belpre the same week they played Zanesville and Chilli this year and Belpre looked liek a JV team compared to the other teams and athletes.

As far as football, Warren would still be a D3 school playing smaller schools (not many points there).

Warren is D3 in football and D2 in most other sports and playing quality D2 schools will help them much more than D3 or D4. Remember Warren beat Belpre at Belpre in a couple of those bball tourney runs.

Over the next 2 to 3 years I see Warrens football game getting above .500 but I also see the track program drop off some.

So does anyone have any idea on rosters for this up coming season? I haven't heard of any coaching changes or anything else like that. I know warren lost several key players that will graduate this year. Who will fill their roles? The JV team was pretty competetive last year, will any of them get any playing time on varsity this year?

Yes, Warren beat Belpre during some of those Final Four trips, but Belpre did beat Warren at Warren too. Sometimes Belpre even swept the season series.

To get into the football playoffs you have to win games to get points. Warren isn't winning enough games to get enough points to get into the playoffs. They would have back in the 1980's if they had taken 8 teams like they do now and that is playing a TVC schedule.

Warren has scheduled Meigs this year in football. Why, because they think they can win and if they win they get points.

Meigs is D4 in football, only 3 boys away from being D3 Like Warren. Vinton and Athens are D3. Alexander is D4. So with that, Warren would play 2 schools their division and 2 schools 1 lower. And I might add, schools that would be more competative against then some of the schools they are currently playing in the SEOAL. You don't have to play every game up to get a nice load of points, you have to play teams that will win some games.

The whole idea is to schedule teams tough enough to make you ready for the state tourney, regardless of the sport. But you can't demoralize a team by scheduling teams so tough (Zanesville & Chilly they have to play) that you get pounded. Both of those teams made Warren look like a JV team from what I read. Plus, with Warren's success in the boys tourney, it doesn't look like playing Zanesville and Chilly is helping them out much. Warren kids play hard, but they are playing against a much deeper talent pool.

Remember, Warren is the rural school in a conference that is made up of basically larger city schools. These schools don't run activitive busses to encourage more kids to take part in sports or band like Warren does.

Just my take on this tread - more worthless opinions.

The SEOAL is a nice fit for Warren, and the TVC is a nice fit for Belpre.

Chilly and Zanesville will alway have good b-ball programs but they will not always have the kind of talent both have been blessed with the last couple of years. That playing field will level off some next year. In fact I think the league will be very balanced in b-ball next year.

I also think Warren will get over the 500 mark in football very soon - maybe this year. They are getting better.

I was fortunate enough to play three varsity sports in both the TVC and SEOAL at Warren, and IMO making the switch to the SEOAL was a great move - sure it was harder to win but it was much more fun to play good teams week in and week out. Warren's first year in the SEOAL they were 8-2 in football and lost only to Gallia's best team ever, and had a game stolen at Logan 7-6 (called a Warren TD back in the last minute on a mystery motion penalty). That team would have made the playoffs under today's format even with the two losses.

The track team will drop off some after this year - but this year - Warren will field arguably its best mens track team ever - they will be very deep and talented.

Why would Warren leave the SEOAL? Warren will probably win the All Sports Trophy this year, and they are almost always in the top 3 for that trophy every year - even without tennis.

Last point - both Belpre and Warrens football programs are mere shells of what they once were. I do not think all the blame can be pointed at coaching turnover or admin screwups. Kids are different today, than they were even 10-15 years ago. They have far more distractions and modern convieniences today than they did even when I was in high school. Football used to be King - it is not anymore - we used to play baseball and basketball just to pass the time until football season came around again. My kids rarely go to even watch their friends play the game.

Tyler Spence is also part of next years Sr. class.

I know this is a football discussion about Warren, and i really hope the boys do well this year and try to break the rut they are stuck in.

That being said, as runhallerun stated, Warren can compete in almost every other sport. The boys track team this year will be a force possibly at the state level if things go right. Has everyone on here mentioning how many times the leagues have gone to state, forgotten that Warren's Boys X Country team has made it to state in Div 1 in 2000 and then in Div 2 in 2001, 2002, 2006, and this year 2007 with a 9th place finish. This shows that even though the football team may have been struggling, other sports were getting their time to shine.

Also the Gallia girls have repeatedly accomplished many things in Track and X Country.

Quite honestly, I am tired of Warren Football theories, opinions, etc...the answer does not lie in the league they play or even who the coach is...the answer lies within the boys who choose to put on the pads! The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender! IMO, in recent years, too many young men who have worn the Warren Football uniform have surrendered early and often! Why? It's simply easy to surrender or quit when you do not have much invested... If you invest hour upon hour of heart, sacrifice, and sweat in the months of January through August there is no way you quit when you get down a score or two on Friday nights in September, October, and imagine this Warriors-November!!! Past success in Warren Football occurred when and only when enough members of the TEAM chose to WORK year round. No matter who the coach was; Hill, Riffey, Devol, Welsh, Grider, Santini, Pifer-success or lack there of- was an indication of the level of commitment the PLAYERS had!!! As for talk of a 500 season...thats bologna! As far as I know, no block or tackle has been made for the '08 season yet so win them all Warriors! But dont kid yourself boys...you better be in the weightroom right NOW and hopefully sooner!!!

Excellent post warriiorfan !
Halle nailed it as well with "football was king then...it is not now."

Warren continues to have some of the most talented athletes in the area, but football is no longer a priority for them. It is not only due to the program being "down", but with nearly year-round basketball, soccer, and
20 grand-a-year college expenses forcing students to work and specialize in scholarship attempts in the running sports, there are just too many other things to get done. Other league schools have the student body (and large O-line bodies) to maintain a committed group of FB-only guys January thru August. Warren does not.
There is one more scarcely discussed factor at Warren that tends to extinguish the necessary Jan-thru-Aug training spirit. Too many boys have trained, conditioned, and participated in all the spring and summer workouts only to watch others with well-connected parents and popular last names show up in August and be awarded the starting jobs. (The practice transcends head-coaches and seems to be more staff-oriented)Until the politics thing is amended, we will continue to see good JH and JV teams sort of fizzle out at the varsity level as talented athletes become frustrated and scale back their commitment.
Looking forward to enjoying a game or two in '08 without the emotional investment.

football just isnt as popular of a sport anymore at Warren.
some boys say they dont play because the team isnt good.
well, if tou dont get the numbers out, it really hurts. for yeras depth has been a huge problem, especially at the O-Line positions.

this season should be a good one for us. a bunch of guys are working hard in the weight room after school. hopefully it will pay off.

"Football games are won between November and August"
