Two Fairland students place in the top 10 of county spelling bee

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — Fairland Middle’s Julia Wu and Fairland West Elementary’s Matthew McComas earned top 10 finishes in the Lawrence County spelling bee held Jan. 18 in Ironton.
The two students won their school spelling bees to move on to the county competition. Wu, a seventh-grader, finished second, and McComas, a fifth-grader, finished in the top 10. Both were making return trips to the county’s bee and improved.
Other area students also participated as one of the 16 competitors in this year’s spelling bee, including Sarah Letchford and Micah Lucas from South Point Middle School, Tommi Butler and Zach Guy from Rock Hill Middle, Felicity Jenkins and Alex Steiding from Symmes Valley elementary and middle schools, Lance McCoy and Alex Carey from Dawson-Bryant, Shayne Lindsey and Jacob McNeely from Chesapeake Elementary, Joseph Payton and Ronnie Brown from Ironton Catholic, and Logan Gleichauf and Michael Aldridge from Ironton City.
