I think it was a good hire. He's young, energetic, committed to building a program, and has big ideas for the West Side. Kudos to the administration for making the right decision!!!

The now former head coach brought the Senators from a 1-4 start to a 9-6 finish in the 2007-2008 season - a first for the team in well over a decade.

I don't understand where they got their numbers from and what the first was. West has been .500 as recent as a few years ago. And the team did not start 1-4 last year. They beat Notre Dame, lost to CG and Minford, then beat New Boston and Webster making them 3-2 before Kitchen took over.

I hope the West fans support this new guy but the West administration REALLY dropped the ball when it came to hiring Kitchen...too bad for West but from what I understand West adm. does this kind of thing a lot....hope this new guy proves that wrong.

The only great hire I have seen at West was Coach Triplett for football....and even that program doesn't have enough coaches, it has to be frustrating for the West community.

I hear that coach smith and coach phillips took a very young group to the peake shootout today and was tremedously outmatched by playing the varsity teams of north adams,portsmouth,eastern and chesepeake.....even though they was outmached the boys went and played hard keep working boys...i played for coach phillips and he has alot of good things to say about coach smith so keep listening to them boys they will guide you in the right direction....come on seniors/juniors match the want of the boys showing up now so we can get better...coach phillips tells me they have a camp schedule all week next week...good luck play hard

A lot of younger senators have some balls bouncing over on the west side, and with practice comes improvement. The upcoming year is going to be full of youth for the senators with the exception of a few vets like Justin VanGundy, and Bricker.

Maybe West can finally get a coach to stay for the long term and not as a stepping stone for a better job to go where basketball is one of the top 3 sports
