Valley clinched a share with a 16 point win over Minford tonight...but with the Burg win...it's an outright title.
Thanks Pirates!
Thanks Pirates!

A good win for Burg and the Pirates finish up the season with Northwest on Friday night.

Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
If Burg manages to get past Coal Grove in the first round, they will run into Portsmouth for the sectional final. That is a tall task for any team in the area, but I remember when a below .500 Burg team faced 20-0 Oak Hill in 2009 and put them out of the tournament much earlier than expected. Anything can happen in the tournament if a team doesn't bring their A game.
Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
Wow ...how in the world does this happen ....didn't burg win the first time too ? And almost same score ? Not sure ....someone will know on here for sure

Waverly won in OT the first game, but it may have been the same score.HItops wrote:Wow ...how in the world does this happen ....didn't burg win the first time too ? And almost same score ? Not sure ....someone will know on here for sure

Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
This result shocks me! Did Waverly just have a bad game? I know Burg is scrappy but wow!
Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
If you look at the whole season, yes Burg is down, but they have lost 3 in OT and had 4-5 games where they lost by 5 pts or less. This team is not as bad as their record shows and could easily had a 10-12 win season. Barrick has been able to keep them in nearly every game by controlling the tempo. After losing all 5 starters from last years team and no seniors starting this year, the season has went similar to what was expected considering the experience and size advantage of most of the other teams in the SOCII.HItops wrote:Wow ...how in the world does this happen ....didn't burg win the first time too ? Great job Burg. Has to be a dissapointing loss for Waverly. Maybe it will get them ready for the tourney?
Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
Wow! Very surprised by this score, burg must have played well. Coach Barrick always finds a way to keep games close and give his kids a chance to win the game. Sounds like the young kids must have executed down the stretch to get the road win. :122246

Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
As a Valley fan, I'm very thankful for the Pirates victory tonight. As a guy who is married to a former Burg cheerleader, I'm even more thankful for the Pirates victory on Valentine's Day :122246
In all seriousness though, my first thought after hearing this score announced on the radio was of what kind of satisfaction this win must be for those kids and that coaching staff at Burg. While some of you might think I'm crazy, I'd venture to guess this win ranks up pretty high on the list of coach Barrick's career wins. I say that based on an interview I heard him give before a game a few weeks ago when the team was still struggling with just 1 win at the time. He mentioned how frustrating it had become for the players and even the coaching staff, given that they had been so close in so many contests, yet it was the losses mounting rather than the wins. As is very typical of a coach Barrick team, this group has continued to get better and better, staying the course and garnering several wins in the second half of the season. The win over South Webster was a solid win for them, but this win over Waverly is definitely a win to hang their hat on as they prepare for the tournament to begin. I had already had them pencilled in on my bracket to knock off Coal Grove in the Sectional Semifinals and take on Portsmouth in the Sectional Finals. I think this win will certainly help keep the focus of the kids as they prepare for the post-season.
Prior to tonight, I thought Oak Hill's win over Waverly was the upset of the season in the SOC. But, now, I believe that honor goes to the Pirates. Congrats on the vicory Pirates and best of luck the rest of the way!

Wow! Congrats to Coach Barrick and his staff and to their kids. The kids must have played really well to get a tough road victory.
Re: Waverly vs. Wheelersburg 2/14
Waverly jumped out to a 7 point lead in the 1st (lead by Kretzer's 7 points) before Jake went to the bench with 2 fouls. Burg came back and lead 15-14 after one. A 13-6 2nd quarter gave the Pirates a 28-20 lead at halftime. Burg extended the lead to 9 after three at 46-37. After Burg built a 13 point lead early in the 4th Waverly came charging back and cut it to one at 48-47 with 3:02 to play. The teams traded buckets and FT's to make it 50-47, 50-49, 52-49, 52-51 then 53-51 with .15 seconds to play. Waverly got the ball to midcourt and called timeout with .11 to play. The play was designed to go inside to Kretzer but that didn't work out and the ball was knocked out of bounds with .3 to play. An inbounds pass to Kelly and desperation 3 from the corner was no good.
Burg was lead by Moore with 17, Eddie Miller 10, Dylan Miller 9, Cowgill 8, Massie 7, Claxon 2
The Pirates were 6-10 from the line
Waverly was lead by Kretzer with 28, Kelly 11, White 8, Corcoran 4
The Tigers were 6-12 from the line
The Tigers could have folded in the 4th but showed great heart as they mounted a good comeback but couldn't cash in on opportunities down the stretch. It hurts but you have to shake this one off and get ready for a very good Valley team invading the jungle Friday night. Da Tigers can make some noise in the tournament but they have to get it together starting Friday night.
