Re: Great Conquerors Of History
I hear them called Greatest but..is that really a good thing to call them? sorry..pet peeve
It is almost like they're talked about in history like they're great builders or something. Most of these men caused great suffering and misery to 10's of thousands of people..just so they could feed their ego! They were pathetic mass murders for the most part. I would venture to guess that Hitler and Stalin will be added to these list in years to come.
I mean, don't you think it's time history starts calling it the way it really was?

How can Hitler ever be put on the list when he never conquered anything. He failed to conquer the world in both of his attempts. He may have overran and occupied a few countries on his way, but he never actually conquered anyone, at least not in my opinion.

IMO, the greatest thing about Alexander was his ability to fight any enemy in their style in any type of terrain.
FYI, after the Battle of Arbella the Macedonian Phalanx was not used again, even in India.

There is a lot of truth to what Kantucky says about these men being mass murderers. Though they might have been magnanimous on occasion they were men of their times and compassion was not a virture.
Caesar says after the Gallic War that he killed a million and enslaved a million. Reading The Gallic War by Moses Hadas and Caesars own commentaries. both these figures might be very conservative.

Alexander by far. Not only did he conquer the known world, but he spread Greek civilization throughout that world. Mass murderes I think someone has been drinking from the PC hippie cup.
