lightle04,

I heard it was a possibility because the kids were so young, however I never have found out exactly who was held back. I truly believe the program will be solid the next 7 or 8 years, if all goes as planned.

Last years 7th grade boys went 12 and 5 and lost to the tourney champs Unioto by 3 on a last second shot in the semis. In the regular 14 games they went 10-4. Lost to Unioto twice, Adena and Westfall once.

That 7th grade squad is more than just 1 player. While he Brabson is very good, he had some help in Accardo, Jordan, Williams, Bennett, McDowell and others. Accardo might be the best defensive post player I have seen at that level. His footwork, smarts and aggressiveness helped him slow down players that were 4 to 6 inches taller. Plus he boxes out better than anyone at that level.

IMO, the best thing that will come out of this will be that the other players will have to work harder to rise up to the level of competition that they will see in practice everyday now.

As for the schedule, I wont discuss that here! lol

What makes you think the boys held back will beat out the others? They practiced together all last year, and those younger boys held there own and more! :122245

Holding those kids back to play basketball is ridiculous.

Sad statement by the administration to let that happen.

The kids are young and should be held back, and they play football, baseball, and run track too.

A student should only be held back for academic reasons.

They should have started Kindergarten a year later, holding a kid back in JH to play ball is just goofy.

Hard to believe the Doc felt it was the right thing to do.

If athletics are the reason they are being held back, it seems kind of crazy. If they are behind academically I would understand but to each its' own. Whatever reason they were retained, hopefully it will work out for them. Best of luck.

I can only think of one kid being held back in the 8th grade from Southeastern that played sports. That was in the mid 80's and the kid missed over 60 days of school due to mono. If you ever saw him play athletics you would know it was not for sports. If I am missing someone please....enlighten me with some names.

IT COST MONEY TO EDUCATE A STUDENT. TAXPAYERS MONEY. IF THESE ATHLETES ARE BEING HELD BACK FOR ATHLETICS SHOULD THEIR PARENTS PAY TUITION? THIS IS A GENERAL STATEMENT NOTHING AGAINST PIKETON. THERE IS A GRADING SYSTEM FOR ACADEMICS--- YOU FAIL IT'S THE COMMUNITIES' RESPONSIBILITY TO EDUCATE.

That is exactly right, why should the taxpayers foot the bill for an extra year of educating these students just so they can play ball.

The days of that kind of nonsense should be long behind us. How many pro athletes have walked the halls of PHS?

I have heard that the majority of those boys are very good students, so I doubt there is any legitimate reason for them to repeat the 8th grade.

The Doctor shouldn't allow this to happen.

eagles73, Good for you. Could you post it on here for the rest of us please?

If the kids are being held back because of athletics, and this is a BIG IF, then what about the kids in the grades behind them? Do we automatically hold them back so they can have the same opportunities to play? I've heard several theories about why the kids were held back, but since they're not mine, haven't dwelled on it too much. If sports is the priority over an education, I feel sorry for the kids in the future.

It is just sad that some parents try to relive "the glory days" through their children.
