SHL Coaching Changes

Post by shljunkie »

Any word on when coaching decisions will be made? I think those decisions are usually made in May?? I've heard Coach Schneider from WU is planning to resign. I've also heard there is a question as to whether Coach McFarland from Peebles will be back, though not due to him not wanting the job. I've heard a group of parents has made it their mission to get rid of him, for whatever reasons? Doesn't make sense to me, it seems Peebles is finally getting their program back on the right track and now the parents want to get rid of the coach??

I believe Coach Faust did resign to take an administration job, AD possibly? Coach Faust did a great job getting Lynchburg's program back on track as well and I'm sure his leadership in that role will be missed. I'm not sure why anyone would want to coach these days with parents wanting to control everything, there is no respect there anymore. Not sure who they want at Peebles, evidently someone they feel they can control. Parents need to learn to stay out of things and their kids will be much better off in the long run.

I sure hope they don't run off Doug or try to force him out. He's done a fine job w/the team and is on the verge of bringing pride back to Peebles bball.

Hoopin and Sneaky, I agree with you almost completely. I know a lot of people from Peebles and though I no longer have kids who play at Peebles, I'm pretty familiar with people who do. The varsity players at Peebles are not jealous of Blake Justice, they are genuinely happy for him and excited with him. They are a group of kids, from what I know, that genuinely get a long together and are all good friends. It's the parents. What a lesson they are teaching their kids. I agree, Coach McFarland has started turning this program around and he needs to lay down the law. If these parents (and administrators) have any sense, they'll get behind him. Just an outsider's opinion.

Schools that frequently change coaches often have losing programs in the long run. The schools that stand behind a coach seem to win more often. (Look at the SHL powerhouse teams--even the down years are not so bad, same coach). The correlation between coaching stability and successful teams is not a coincidence. To name all of the reasons behind this correlation would use up all 60000 characters. However, to name a few:
*Players understand what is expected and will do it if they love the game.
*Coaches coach toward a future at the school (build a program, not just manage a team)
*Synergy moves toward doing what is coached (you better do it or sit the bench), not spent on ousting the coach.

Some people will complain no matter the coach or amount of playing time. This is not a Peebles thing, this is everywhere. But when everyone understands that the coach is final, they get with the program instead of trying to get their own way.
I have been a player and I have been a coach. As a player I always knew that I was to obey the coach, unless he asked me to put myself or others in danger. Several didn't play me the way I wanted to be played, and a few were extremely tough on me. However, in hindsight not one coach gave me instructions to compromise my ethics or morals. I learned a lot playing basketball. How to complain to get my way was not one of them.
Peebles is blessed with great talent currently and I wish them the best. Talent will win some games. Talent with a true leader will create a winning tradition. However, a coach’s leadership is directly proportional to the support of the administration. So far the BOE, and Administration have renewed Coach McFarland as they should. I expect they will do the same again this year. The only thing that I feel will end the year to year circus he has had to deal with is an extended contract of at least three years. I know that such a contract is not even considered for supplemental jobs, but groundbreaking contracts make for a tremendous show of leadership.

No word yet on the coaching position at West Union...I hope they get someone in there soon, so the boys can have a good summer...On Peebles coaching position...I dont understand this one...they had a pretty good year last season (winning their sectional) why would you want to change it.

Looks as though it isn't over at Peebles. I heard today the coach was told that the job is open and they are actively taking applications and he can also apply if he chooses too. Haven't heard who all has applied but several have expressed an interest even from outside the SHL. Doesn't the administration see that sure people are going to be interested, when they see the talent there. Peebles has a coach in place already who took the job when there was not much talent there and he has worked hard to build the program. Now that he has talent to work with, you're going to let him go and give up on him?? What kind of administration operates like that? Arrow is right. Look at the teams that have winning programs. What do they have? Consistency from year to year, a coach that has an administration that will back him in the discipline department. Very shaky time for Peebles right now.

I'm pretty sure that is due process. Anytime someone has a 1 year contract they have to post the job. And when a job gets posted they have to take applications. They don't have to hire or interview, but they do take the applications. So hopefully don't get too worked up. Just hope it's the process.

No, I don't think that is the case this time. True, all contracts are one year only but when a current coach wants to keep his job, and the administration are in agreement with that, it's pretty much a done deal. It seems the administration has really opened this up and is actively seeking applicants. From what it seems, they seem to be caving in to the small group of parents who are out to get the coach and are putting on the pressure with their continual calls and complaints.

Right on. It's administration (mainly AD's) way of taking the heat off themselves.
