Please post the results. It will be interesting to hear how Portsmouth does against Minford and North Adams because Warren played both of these teams at Rio Grande.

Re: Portsmouth 08-09
I did not attend the shootout due to being at work in Columbus. I did talk to one of the players yesterday who told me that Portsmouth only had 5 players dress, missing 2 starters. I believe they lost a close game to North Adams, but won the other games.

How did East do in this with the bigger schools? Hopefully they had a good showing.

Tartanblue: I don't know how East did in the shootout, but I am sure that regardless of the results, it was good for them to play some of the bigger schools.

Don't count Warren Local out in the SEAOL title, they are a young team this year but have beaten most league teams last year at the JV level. Those boys have now moved up,to the Varsity level with a year in the gym,AAU,and fall league experience to add to the mix. So you may want to add them in the running .

Re: Portsmouth 08-09
I wish we could turn it around in football, too, Tobias, but it looks grim at this point.........but I do believe our kids will fight to the end...........
I know the regular season for football ends in October, but I believe there is a certain date that official basketball practice can begin..........I don't think it's as soon as football season ends, but I could be wrong on that.
I do know that there has been increased participation for basketball in every class this past year......and that is what we need.......more kids playing basketball......hopefully our program will show the dividends of such.
I'm looking for a winning season from all 3 of our teams at PHS......varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen.....something that hasn't been done at Portsmouth for a long time...........

Re: Portsmouth 08-09
trojandave, a friend of mine is currently doing research for Piketon Basketball History and he came across this story in a 1917 Portsmouth News Paper:
Portsmouth 100 Piketon "Club" Team 6
"Portsmouth Trojans finished the season with a 16-3 record by trouncing a much smaller school in Piketon. Portsmouth was led in scoring by "Jude" Baesman who scored an amazing 66 points in the contest. Baesman would have probably scored more points, but Portsmouth's coach Professor H. Gates Trout inhibited his players from shooting in the final minutes of the game to practice their passing. "
Professor H. Gates Trout coached Portsmouth for two years leading the Trojans to a 30-5 record and played in the unofficial State Tournament in 1917 losing to St. Clairsville.
I will have to do more research on "Jude" Baesman....if he could score 66 back in those days, he must have been one heck of a player!

Re: Portsmouth 08-09
Jeff: Thanks for the info......interesting that Piketon was referred to as a "club" team..........Jude Baesman must have been the Bevo Francis of his day...........I would say without researching it that the 94 point margin of victory is the largest in Portsmouth history.
Just to even things out, I remember in 1999 when Piketon came to Portsmouth and beat the Trojans 70-65 in OT........a Trojan team that advanced to the regionals in D2 that year losing to Philo 62-54 in the semifinals.
Best wishes to you and the Red Streaks as you go for that SVC title.....I think Piketon will be in hunt for sure............
