I feel that it being a championship game they should have District 11 umpires NOT Ironton umpires. If I was coaching for the Burg I would demand different umps.

Mr. Seagraves is fully aware there is a tournament at Ironton. The head of the District 11 umpires association has been unable to supply the Junior League tournament with umpires for whatever the reason. Therefore, Ironton has been left to its own devices when finding umpires. I can say that in Ironton's 3 games to this point, there has been no one affiliated with the Ironton Little League who has umpired an Ironton game. Game 1 had two OHSAA umpires. Game 2 versus Green had 3 District 11 umpires (2 from Franklin Furnace). Game 3 had one District 11 umpire (from Coal Grove) and one OHSAA umpire (from Rock Hill).

Freesafety, it's a true shame that people like you have to bring up issues that do not exist and try to make them an issue. If you'd like the responsibility of finding umpires, I'd gladly give you that job. Just send me a private message and we'll set it up.

Everyone that I've talked to from Wheelersburg has handled themselves with class and shown great sportsmanship. I look forward to those fans returning to our park Tuesday for the game.

Who were the umpires? Were they sanctioned? If they were not, I can understand why the coach was upset.

Here is one thing that has got most of the umpires from Scioto Co upset. For the most part we are the ones that have taken care of the tourns in both county an have for the past 5 to 7 yrs an all u have to do is ask anybody from Ironton, rock hill or coal grove an symmes valley an South Point (in the past) an they will tell u were most of the umpires come from an who they are. There's not as many now as there used to be an the ones that are still doing it want to stay as close to home as possible, cause of gas price, That is the best answer that I can give u for not having District 11 Umpires at some of the games this year.

I now myself an a nother umpire was doing games at Northwest in 9-10's (a couple of years ago) an then got a call an they said that they need help at rock hill with the 11-12's cause they didnt have enough umpires so we went. Now a days that would have cost at least $50 dollars in gas an most people just cant do it or just plain o'l refuse to. If it wasnt for the kids I WOULDNT be doing it!!!

Sanctioned for what???? One of the umpires was a District 11 umpire. One was licensed and in good standing with the OHSAA. The other has never been a member of the District 11 association but has umpired more games than most Little League volunteers I know and does an excellent job.

Sendem is correct, there are not enough District 11 umpires to go around. There are too many games going on at the same time for them all to be covered by D11. Plus, these guys are volunteers and shouldn't be expected to fork out $40 in gas money each night to drive all over 2 counties. Most people won't volunteer to umpire because of the way some fans and coaches treat them. Add that to the price of gasoline and you can find out why it's hard to get D11 to cover all the games all the time.

Are you referring to the post by free safety or are you talking about other coaches who were upset?

The guys that have been in charge of the Ironton Tournament has done a very good job. Everyone that I have talked to said that it has been ran very well. An the night that I was there Umpiring it was ran very smooth an on time!!

As far as tonights Championship Game between Ironton an Wheelersburg, I have been told that there is suppost to be " 4 " umpires for this game. I was going to go but they said they had it covered. So good luck to both Teams an for the weather to hold off to get this one in.

Is the game still on for tonight? We had lots of rain in Scioto county.

As far as umpiring goes...I helped umpire District 11 games for several years and loved every mintue of it. I also served as an ADA with many fine dedicated VOLUNTEERS. We volunteerd our time to umpire and serve just like people at the local leagues. When only a handful volunteer, someone is going to be left out when it comes torunament time because all the tournaments CANNOT be covered. LL has added tournaments as well and that makes the job even more difficult to find people to cover games.

Donnie Rawlins and the man before him Dave ??? (cant think of his last name at the moment) did a fine job considering they were short handed before the tournaments ever started. These men spend their own money to go to clinics, teach clinics for leagues (that people do not attend),buy their own gear and pay for their own transportation to games because they love the game and the kids! Remember, LL umpires DO NOT get paid. My hat is off to the staff of D 11 and to all the tournament directors.

I know free safety well and I am sure it was not his intent to appear to place blame. I also know blindwhitehat and he has always been a man of intergity. The bottom line is that D 11 simply does not have enough bodies.

BlindWhiteHat,
First off let me say I'm sorry for the remarks made under my name, I let a co-worker read the sight and let him comment on here about the game(I thought, that won't happen again). I also know what it's like in LL trying to get help to ump, work on the field, keep the book everybody says yes until the day comes for them to show-up and nobody there. So for a tournment to be run everybody has to chip in and do what needs done for the KIDS.

I umpired for a few years myself in District 11 and usually with the crew that Alabama Mike was with. Bama would usually go behind the plate and I would take either 1st or 3rd depending on how many guys we had. I would still love to umpire, but I just don't have the time to do it anymore, plus the fact that gas is so high it is really expensive to drive to some of these locations. I have umpired at Symmes Valley, Clay, Wheelersburg, and Lucasville and enjoyed every minute of it. I wish I had the time to still do it.

Apology accepted.

Many here have hit the nail on the head when talking about Little League. There are just too few volunteers to go around when you are trying to find umpires, concession workers, scorekeepers, field crew and so on.

I have coached in many games with BG77 and BamaMike wearing the blues and there are no finer umpires/volunteers than those guys. It's a shame that there are fewer and fewer guys like them willing or able to give their time to umpire.

Running these tournaments is difficult because with all the different divisions going on at the same time, there just aren't enough umpires to go around. Even though our league has struggled finding umpires to call the games this year, I'd never settle for anyone who I thought would compromise the integrity of the tournament. I have umpires lined up for the final game(s) that are not from Ironton or Wheelersburg and are excellent umpires and fine people. I feel confident they will do a great and fair job in calling the rest of the tourney.

We received another downpour around 3:00 pm today that did us in again. The weather looks as if it will cooperate and allow us to get a game in Thursday 6:00pm.

Our District is one of the biggest Districts in Ohio, not in number of children but in leagues involved. District 11 has 18 Leagues(if all leagues had a team in tournaments, there would be 180 teams). It is very hard to cover all the tournaments unless the umpires have help from the host leagues. There are many great umpires in our leagues who are not District 11 umpires. Almost every tournament game there is a District 11 umpire behind the plate and league volunteers on the bases.

I would encourage the retired umpires to help District 11. I know you old guys  can't umpire every game but if you could just do one or two games a year I think it would take alot of pressure off our District staff. It would be fun to shoot the bull with ya again.

Thanks BWH!! It was always a pleasure umping the games you coached because we knew we would be treated with respect and our calls would not be questioned, at least not by the coaches anyway. lol

Ha Ha!! If I wasn't so busy with work and remodeling my house I would love to do a few games, but time and money are the issue right now. All of my time and extra money is being sunk into our remodeling job. I haven't even been able to hunt for Indian artifacts as much this year as I normally do and that's a real bummer for me.
