It is this kind of "Devil's Advocate." thinking that excuses athletic transfers and helps perpetuate the righteousness of their decisions. Hear me out. Let's forget about the FFA, NHS, or AP classes, band, open enrollment, parochial schools, the perceive chance at a lucrative scholarships, take all of that out of the equation and look at the athletes as their own entity. Simplify it; "Johnny the Athlete" (for whatever reason) wants to leave the "Blue" school, his home school since birth and he wants to play for the "Red" school. Am I the only to see that there is a problem with this?
Several questions come to my mind. One, where is the parents on this issue? Two, when "Johnny the Athlete" was being raised did anyone teach him the importance of team? Three, and to a greater extent, teach him about loyalty and community pride? Four, are parents enabling this kind of selfish individualism?
And think of this, a community can grow a promising athlete, and a good coach can build a program around that guy or girl. That athlete would not only give credibility to the program, but to the community as well, that would translate to future success. Coaches don't necessarily build programs as much as the athletes do. The athletes are the ones that other kids will follow and want to be a part of something special. And even to community legacy, when I have introduced myself to other people outside my community, they would say "Hey, isn't that where so and so played, he was tough S.O.B." "I remember watching so and so play..." "I saw a game in McArthur and this kid was ..." You know what I am talking about we have all done it or has been done to us.
I could be bias on this issue, because everyone knows that Vinton County has been hurt more than anyone by these actions, especially recently. However, I don't think I am being bias, I believe that is greater issues at stake.
And has for the lucrative scholarship argument, it is not holding water much anymore. We had a kid leave to play for a "Blue" school football team, in search of better scholarships offers. He received the same kind of offers if would have stay here. In this day and age, of the Super Informational Highway, the internet forums, free posting film recruiting websites, recruiting services and television exposure for regular season high school competitions. If you can play they will find you. Just because the guy in the stands thinks you are good enough to play DI or your Dad thinks you could be a Buckeye, that is not a great evaluation process of DI talent. If DI recruiters or Jim Tressel are not calling you and beating down your door, then it must tell you something, maybe like, just maybe, DIII and NAIA might not be a bad place to be if you want to play past high school.
Just my opinion, but this transferring for "Athletic" gain is out of hand and if affects us more personally because of the nature of our small town roots.
