Game day is finally here! This is set up to be a huge one. Winner will get some great mometum heading into the season while the loser will have to regroup and see what went wrong.

Key to the game is the big hogs up front for Ironton and the speedsters of the Burg. Speed might work for a quarter or 2, but its hard to maintain that speed when you got 250+ pounds hitting you all night. Whoever wins the trenches wins this game. My bet is on Ironton.

As always never know what to expect from this game other than 4 quarters of hard nosed pad poppin, looking for an ironton win in a close game, Unless Lutz has something to prove and could be a win by as much as he allows

Especially with that passing attack. That was an awesome display by those guys in the scrimmage. I know that sounds funny a passing attack from Ironton.

R U serious, you think the Burg's top player last year was Stamper? Don't get me wrong, he was a helluva player for the Burg, but if memory serves me correct, he wasn't the one who tore Ironton up last year. It was mainly the D-line, who almost all return along with the starting LB and on offense, it was a host of players. Granted, most of those guys are gone but the returning players are more than capable of filling their shoes. The Burg offense will have a different look to it and might just be one that surprises people.

I don't get why the Ironton faithful all think this is going to be a blowout, especially after last years game and the closeness of this game over the last 5 years. I look for a good, hard fought game they will be won in the 4th qtr. Heat could play a major role in this game for both teams. The irony of it is that for the bulk of August and the 2 a day practices, it has been unseasonably cool and the players really haven't had to practice in this kind of heat and humidity. If they are not used to it, it could creep upon them and bite them in the butt. Heat exhaustion is something that hits you hard before you know it and then by then, it could be to late. Look for alot of water breaks and let's hope for everyone on both teams to make it through injury free. What these players will need to do is if they feel like they are getting to hot, take off their helmet and let the heat escape through their head. Heat rises to the top and if it can't escape that is wherein the problem lies.

Good luck Pirates!!!!!! Put win number one in your pocket tonight.

I agree the lack of heat and humidity, during the summer practices could be the major factor of the outcome in this one.
Tigers in a close 1 21-14

I can't see why Wheelersburg is not at least a 4 point favorite in this one. They are playing at home and they won last years game by as much as they wanted. i know they lost alot of talent, but Wheelersburg just reloads. They dont have many down years. Ironton returns alot of players, but they return them from a team that went .500 with not that tough of a schedule the last year or so. I don't expect a game like last year at all. ironton has owned this series in wins, but many of these games are very tight. It may very well come down to an extra point of a field goal. The special teams will be huge in this game. it's early and you really need to be able to put the ball between the uprights.
Blocking and tackling will win this game tonight. ironton has been down in that department the last 5 years or so. If the Tigers can tackle, they may pull a minor upset tonight. it is not easy to win at Wheelersburg and tonight will be no different.
My prediction is 16-14, on a late 27 yard Ironton field goal.

Ironton not that tough of a schedule??? They play in the SEOAL not the SOC, and the SEOAL with Logan, Zainesville, Chillicothe, etc. is a tough leauge.

This game isn't going to be close I still say Ironton by 3 TDs.

OK... this is my take on the game and I have not seen Ironton play this season. This is strictly based upon past history not including last season.

At this point I don't look for this Burg team to score 30+ points unless Ironton hands us a few freebies. I think Ironton is capable of scoring alot of points if we give them a few freebies as well. If Burg's D holds true to form I think Burg will win this game by an extra point 14-13 or a FG 17-14. If not I believe the Tigers will win by 2 TD's say 21-7 or 28-14.

Good luck to both teams and make this another classic opening season showdown to remember. Here's to an injury free and well officiated game.

My guess would be those 250+ hogs will succumb to the heat and humidity a lot quicker than the smaller, quicker, and in much better shape speedsters of Wheelersburg.

Could this be Cramp Bowl II??? :122245

With the talent and depth the Tigers have this season (a luxury we havn't had for a long time) those 250+ pounders only have to play one way, which will help alot in this heat.

You know Ironton Tigers have conditional cramping right?....their cramps only occur when the other team is in the process of driving down the field gaining momentum

Since this thread is so long, I'm starting a separate UPDATES thread for this game - but it's waaaaay down past all the stickies at the top. Good luck to both teams, but as always: GO IRONTON FIGHTING TIGERS
