Green player ejected for throwing a punch

Post by tigergrad95 »

Was not at the game but was watching a clip on youtube where a player from Green punches a St Joe player in the face. I didn't see anything that warranted it. Look under 1-21-12 HSBB: Green 55 St. Joe 64 and give me your thoughts. The punch occurs around the 3:30 -3:40 mark. Just glad nothing else happened

By OHSAA rules any ejected player shall be suspended for the next 2 games as long as he had never been ejected earlier in the season.

I was at the game and poor officiating led up to the punch the kid that did it had been elbowed on the other end of the floor and nothing was called. In my oppinion the officials should not be doing varsity ball I know them. They had no control over the game. Not taking anything away from St. Joes play the played hard as well did the Green kids. It is a shame that it came to that point. But the officials one especially lack of calls or knowing what to call had an impact on the game. He was mad at greens coach and all the fans thought he took it out on the kids. That is not right. If you can't handle it don't ref. But don't take it out on kids T the coach.

You can't blame anything on the refs, on SEOPS... you'll learn

must be something in the water up to Green, they had a girls player " go rogue" in the 4th quarter up at their place last week, luckily she did'nt injure anyone and the coach got her out of the game at the 1st chance after two ugly plays . the 1st play was worthy of an ejection. MD

I would also blame it on Green's coach. He seems to let his team play too physical and doesn't have control of his own players. Starts at the top and the kids are the end result.

Interesting, this is your first post. Sorry, but no lack of officiating or failure of an official to call a foul, justifies throwing a punch. Period. Control or not, throwing a punch is unacceptable.

Plus, your complaint of officials being mad at Green's coach is interesting. No, officials shouldn't hold grudges, but it's been know to happen. I don't know these allegations to be true, obviously you feel compelled to say so. Kind of like threatening to T-up a kid before the season starts. Some might call it Karma.

As for the comment of whether they should do varsity ball, I'm sure they're class 1 officials and were hired by the home school, therefore able to do varsity ball. Unfortunately, your opinion doesn't supercede OHSAA rules.

I think the games are being called 100% better than last season. Way less physical and they are doing a much better job this year calling fouls on the perimeter . They are finally not letting bigger stronger players put there hands on smaller players waists and guide them around the floor like last year. Last season guard play suffered a ton from that not being called .

I wondered how long it would take to make it private or disappear from youtube all together. I was shocked it made it there in the first place.

So was I. Especially since it was uploaded by Greenbobcats.net, at least edit out the punch. I'll bet this player is back in uniform after his 2 game suspension. If I was the coach, the kid wouldn't touch the floor again. But knowing the coach he will be right back out there.

That's where the administration needs to step in, just my $ .02.

If this was college I would say kick him off the team cause they are adults but this is a young kid who was frustrated with the game and most likely the season. Let him serve his two games maybe bench him for the season but don't take basketball totaly away from him.

I have seen quite a bit of physical play so far this year. It's just the direction the game seems to be headed. I don't like it but it is what it is.

On the incident from Saturday night, I don't think any excuse can be made to justify that behavior. No amount of physical play can warrant a player to throw a punch.

BlindWhiteHat, I see physical play as well, but it seems like the players know when to harness it. Being physical is part of the game today because players are getting faster, stronger and more athletic. Being pushed around the paint is not something you can let your team get away with. Boxing out and being physical is apart of the game.

But that's where you draw the line. As a referee and coach if you see a player becoming violent rather than playing hard that is the time to step in and let the player know that you are watching them and will not let it get away. Most the time this gets into the players head and he has a chance to back himself down without the frustration of being removed and benched for hard play. Kind of psychological if you think into it.

Teams are physical, but it seems like Green and a few other teams are out to hurt players as the game goes on, almost like a pride thing "If we can't beat you we will beat (literally) you." AD needs to sit down with the parents and coach and explain that his cannot and will not be tolerated. Afterwards you speak to the coach and make it clear that it starts with him in practice and controlling his kids better.

It's a privilege to wear the uniform not a necessity. If a kid throws a punch in school they are punished. Most of the time it results in suspension. So a suspension from 2 games is justifiable but now the question is, when will these actions be seen again?

I was at a game where three Green Fans were thrown out and players commiting upper body hard fouls on fastbreak layups -- taking legs out. This was after the game was out of hand.

I guess the refs were the problem in that game also.

I am the kids father that was kicked out. Just wanted everyone to know I have spoken with him and he knows it was wrong. He has been punished not that it is anyones business. I would just like everyone to remember that these are kids and they play with heart and emotions and things happen from time to time. I am always going to defend my child but what he did was wrong. He is a great kid and I just wanted to put his side on here. We would Like to appologize to Coach Williams and The Player. My son said in his mind he was ripping the ball thru granted it didn't look like it to me on video. but that is what my son told me and he even said he was intending on rippin the ball thru across the kids face. I told him that is still un called for. He does feel he is being looked at as a thug or punk and he is not like that at all. So please before you post things on seops or any other site remember kids read your post too. Well I thank you all for allowing me to speak on your forum I do enjoy reading about games I don't post much but I do read post. Also the coaching staff is running his guts out so they are punishing him as well. Just wanted everyone to know it was being addressed and My son is very sorry. I also take some blame because I have always told him to play as physical as the refs will let you. But I never told him to punch anyone. But I want him to play with heart and emotion and not be timid. So I do take some blame. I am sorry. In closing please don't get on here and be HOLIER than thow. We are humans and nobody is perfect even all those on here judging my son. Thanks for the time.

WOW is all I can!

The player should be suspended as the OHSAA determines (2 games I think?) We all make mistakes from time to time so kicking the player off might be harsh, unless this is part of an ongoing problem with the player in practice or something.

I get what you are saying. The physical play I see and don't agree with is all the grabbing that goes on when guarding. It allows a slower but stronger kid to gain an advantage. Plus, I think all that grabbing just lends itself to someone getting frustrated and the physical play then escalates.
