Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
I don't see where any Belpre fans called this an upset if Warren beats Belpre.
The -2.5 points was a jab against Dave Poe of the Parkersburg News because he is more concerned with printing the Vegas betting lines of pro and college games to fill space in the sports section instead of getting out and writing local stories about the kids and the teams.
Of course, I can see where some Warren folks are a little thin-skinned since Belpre (the much smaller school) leads the overall series against Warren (the much larger school).

Do you have the article with Poe saying this?
Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
No, there is no article.
They don't post odds for high school games.
The Parkersburg News and it's sports editor, put out the staff picks on friday mornings for that night's high school football games. I am sure that on August 22nd, the picks will be there for the Warren/Belpre game, with some stupid comment.
My comment on the odds was an attempt at humor at the paper's expense for giving print space to the odds makers on pro and college sports instead of writing more enjoyable stories about the local teams and players, boys or girls.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
If I was Dave Poe, thank God I'm not, I would have to give the edge to Warren in this opener as a touchdown favorite. There are things that concern me as a Warren fan though, like stopping Packard and if our offensive line can block anyone.
It seems to me that Belpre fans annually say that they'll be better this year without the departed graduates. Remember how they were supposed to be "better" without Thornhill? Some people just aren't replaced, but you wouldnt expect anyone to say they wont be competitive.
As for the overall season series, it's kind of like Ohio State-Michigan and Belpre gets to be the bad guys. Many of their wins were early in the series-they are a much older school-and had some pretty long win streaks through the 70's. I'm not sure exactly when the first time Warren beat Belpre. But as of post-1990 the series has been pretty even, with Warren having an edge.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
Belpre has more weapons than just Packard; the QB's and receivers are looking good. Who ever lines up against Tyler Carr, is in for a long day.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
gpgm, you are right...tyler carr is an animal at DE...he will be in the QB's face all night...Belpre has tons of offensive weapons, of coarse they have packard, but they also have Yates at receiver and Markie Tate, who can play anywhere and can make plays...The defense is loaded with speed and power, TVC defensive POY Ashton Packard is an animal at linebacker...if warren wants to win this game, they better run away from packard.
Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
Went and saw the belpre scrimmage today. They looked decent but nothing really that impressive. Both running backs are hard nosed, power backs that run north and south. O-line wasnt bad. Defensively there secondary played pretty soft and allowed many passing opportunities for both berne union and caldwell. Not a lot of depth if any. That's just my assessment...correct me if I am wrong.
Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
So who is going to be the quarterback for the Belpre Golden Eagles this season?

Belpre will be able to hit you from so many different directions. The offense will drive Defensive Coordinators crazy. The can power up and run the football. Packard will make teams play 8 in the box. His hard nose running style will soften up defenses. Then Belpre can spread you out and throw the ball or run the option. Tate throws the deep ball pretty well and Ullman does a nice job with the short passing game. Packard catches the football well and knows what to do with it "once he's got it" With Ryan Yates and Scott Loyland catching the deep ball, Erik Waderker's underneath routes will be a threat to "take it to the house"eveytime he touches the football. Tate can hurt you so many ways. At the scrimmage Sat, he had 2 TD throws and 1 TD catch. The defense isn't up to last seasons standards but it's August. With the offense were going to have the defense doesn't need to be a good as last years defense.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
Give Belpre a couple weeks into the season an the defense will settle in and do a much better job. The offensive side is going to be very explosive with alot of talented athletes. Are they planning on mixing the QB situation? If so thats going to be really tough for the defense letting Markie run some QB options an throwing the long ball then switching things up having Ullman at QB an Tate line up at WR throwing the defense off like crazy cause it'd def. be hard to guard Loyland,Markie,Yates, an Erik at WR Brad Barret at TE an theres always the option of throwing the ball to either Packard or Watkins. So many plays the offense can work with especially with experience players who's had at least a year+ behind them. The offense will be a site to see though thats for sure. I'm curious to see how the special teams will be this year KO,KOR,P, an PR. Field goals an PAT's shouldnt be anything to worry about at all.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
If Warren takes advantage of their only two weapons--Being Dunfee and Venom--they'll probably win. If Pifer tries to run a full back draw to Wolf every play then we might have problems.

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
Belpre will win cause of better Coaching. Warren's play book doesn't seem to be to thick. Plus Warren doesn't have the players in the right positions like Hoon. Hoon isn't a Def. End. He needs to be on the inside. Same on offense.
Good Luck Warriors!

Re: Warren vs. Belpre 2008
Should be a good game, the winner wins by 7 points or less.
Of course, I am picking Belpre.
From the little bit I saw of Belpre's scrimmage this weekend, the offense was slightly ahead of the defense. The key to any game is cutting down on both the physical and mental errors.
Best of health to both teams and...
LETS GO EAGLES!!!

Re: WK 1 Belpre @ Warren
Now that I have seen both teams (albeit briefly) I have my prediction
Warren 14
Belpre 7
Not alot of offense for either team, because I dont think either team has a great deal of weapons or experience in moving the ball. Both teams are green at the skill positions. I think if this game were in week 10 it would be a much better game.
