I wish our small-town newspaper would run more local news like they used to.
And...have you guys heard about the U. of Pittsburgh football PA announcer getting fired a few years back for announcing..."Your attention please, would the owner of a John Deere tractor with West Va. license plate number, "E-I-E-I-O", please move your tractor, you are blocking traffic." This is a true story!

Try telling that to the ones that want to read about local sports. That section is just the opposite and usually only carries AP stories about OSU, the Browns, or the Bengals. Their high school football and soccer coverage this fall was horrible. Another thing I noticed about the PDT sports section latley is they took away the section that showed what sports were on TV that day and replaced it Americas Line which gives the betting lines on games from college and pro. That is just ridiculous to me. Evidently someone at the PDT is a big gambler and needs to see the betting lines every day.

When local papers were bought up by chain groups around the area about 10 years ago, the chains took the cream off the top (ad money) and left the home town papers scraping the bottom of the jug.

They also cut 401-K co-pays, dropped pensions, Christmas parties, cut salaries, vacation time, but expected more work with less employees.

Prior to that, the area had great small town newspapers from Marietta to Portsmouth to Ironton thougth Gallipolis, Logan and Jackson.

Maybe one of these days it will change back, but I doubt it.

You hit the nail right on the head Jottings. I showed up on the local newspaper scene in SE Ohio about the time period you're talking about (1999), and it was the "corporate" approach that drove me out of the business four years later. Most people don't understand the pressures that corporations put on the local guys now.

Do you mean the "you can't possibly have good people on staff if they make more than a nickel an hour?" approach?

I know this is kinda off subject. Why did none of the boys that played with Cam{Kent Robinson,Ryan Cucore, Matt Stroud, Derick Webb , Justin Craft, and others} not get any scholarships?
