Waverly 08-09
Re: Waverly 08-09
How many teams actually go deeper than 9 players? Usually on good teams they only go 7 or 8 players in tight games. Three of the varsity players played soccer so they can run forever.

Re: Waverly 08-09
Outsider,
The scrimmage was "ugly" They actually played it like a real game with the clock stopping and everything. After four quarters I think the score was something like Waverly 61-MT 30.
The Tigers never seemed to have a great stretch, they seemed like they were confused or just not focused. No one stood out - but there were several that would rather forget how they played.
Bright spot- I would say defense- they only gave up 30 points. They did play two other quarters as they waited on the frosh and JV to get there and it was pretty even.
I think Waverly looks like they are mentally ready to get finished with practices and scrimmages and get on with the real games. It is funny how far this program has came since last year because we really didn't look that great and several kids had off nights and we were still able to "win" ! That is a tribute to the coaches Robertson, Hobbs and Stulley, who kept on coaching and it shows that we may win some games this year when we don't play our best. If we are able to "steal" some games like that in the regular season it could mean a lot better record than what some might think.

Confused and not focused could be a concern at this point. I know they are probably itching to get the real games going but but they are young and need this time to get ready.
One major reason they may be tired of practice and scrimmages (bored) is the prolonged amount of time they have done it compared to the past two season when the football team went two weeks into the playoffs. They've had 2 to 3 weeks longer to practice this year, they may not be used to that. At any rate, they have another week left before live action. Take the time and use it wisely - Minford & Rock Hill will be tough challenges out of the gate.

I tend to believe that Martin will lead the team in scoring, rather than Kretzer. I agree with pdracing23 on Martin shooting a lot of FTs this season. For how well he can get to the basket and his athleticism he should have a bunch of free points this year.

It doesnt matter who leads the team in scoring and i know no one is saying it does, but i think Martin takes a lot of shots and as long as they are good shots that will be o.k. and i think the same thing can be said about Kretzer- i think the team will have someone different about every game lead them- in other words look for Roback and Victor or even Kelly or Blanford to lead them in a game or two.
Overall i would guess Kretzer would score a lot of points in transition and the outside where i would guess Martin will score mostly from the paint. Both drive to the hole well so they will both shoot a lot of free-throws.

I agree it does not matter who leads the team in scoring and from what i know that is why this team is going to be much improved because they are all unselfish and they seem to get along well.

Waverly was up big at 1/2, great defensive intensity looks like they will make a little noise this yr. good job by the coaching staff getting this team ready for the upcoming yr. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, and the offense is running more motion should get better looks than last yr. as well. Good looking team. Top Tier in the Soc2 if they keep this up.

The more i see of Waverly the more i think they can win 12 games. This first game with Minford will be a good one. The bad part is Minford will have already played three games before we even get on the floor.

Two more days and we finally see the Tigers play in a regular season game. Minford is first and the Tigers better play well or they will lose.
Re: Waverly 08-09
Waverly could go 15-5 with some luck. Oak Hill is the team to beat but even with last year's team we had them beat at Oak Hill. I guess the first game will set the tone for the rest of the season. We could possibly be 3-0 going into the Oak Hill game the 19th.

Re: Waverly 08-09
There is no way in the world Waverly goes 15-5! They better play well and take it a game at a time. I like the idea of a 2-1 record going into Oak Hill. I really think this team will lose some games they shouldn't because of their youth. 10-10 record would be a good year!
Minford will give the Tigers all they want and a little more- mark it down this will come down to the wire- if we play well!

Bucki4life, there you go being negative again. I think these kids need to know that some of us believe in them. Our youth doesn't play like freshmen and sophomores. I agree that tonight's game is a barometer of the season but 15-5 is realistic.
