It is a shame a game like this should end on a controversial goal. The middle ref was so sure he saw it over the line. The side judge said after the game it did not go in but the middle ref would not ask for help. From the middle ref's position on the field 25 yards away I wonder if his angle was so good that he didn't have to ask for help. Let the kids win or lose the game! Great game hate for either team to lose.

There was some wierd calls both ways. One was the offsides by Waverly on a goal called by the side ref and the middle ref called it off?????

There was also an obvious hand ball on a ball going in the net when Waverlys goalie was out that wasn't called???

And i couldn't tell from up in the score keepers box, that last goal was very close. I did see the net move on top, so i don't know if it had a bunch of back spin or what, but i couldn't tell if it went in or not.

I don't like the three refs calling a game. With two they both call what they see, with three the middle ref takes control and calls the entire field letting the two side refs call the offsides. How many fouls did the side refs call today? I agree there were some weird calls today guess that's part of the game and boy what a game!!

I also referee High school games and i can tell you it is very hard to see everything with just two refs.

Its very hard to be in the proper position for offsides, watching the ball, watching for fouls, and watching for out of bounds. This is made harder with two fast teams.

Its hard enough to do it properly with three, with two its almost impossible. Actually i refuse to do two man games because I don't think it is fair to the kids.

Just because the center ref didn't call a good game doesn't mean that a three man is not the way to go. IMO a three man system with a good center ref is superior to a two man.

3 ref system is the very best way to have a game called. In larger cities with club soccer, a 3 ref system is always used starting aU8's and up. Wish all of the High School games could use this system.

well i said id get on here and be the first one to admit if we werent the better team...and we were clearly not. Athens was good in every aspect of the game. In the first 5 minutes fu's touch was good and seemed to be playing well. Then it was like the boys saw how good athens touches were and how well they were moving and we started to push and press too much. Athens was great...though i didnt think fu played well, its ALL a credit to athens. I appreciate good soccer...and thats what we got tonight. Fu's first "shot" on goal came at the 17:40 mark of the second half. And really we never even sniffed the goal. Athens won every ball in the air and they went TO the ball and fu sat and waited on it. Athens used the wing players so well and fu never looked that way until late and they got a cross and a chance off it....i think in the end fu was in a spot they'd never been and athens took full advantage.

A couple side notes...both teams have some very unknowlegable soccer fans...to some of the fu fans....when a push happens but we keep the ball and they dont call it .......ITS CALLED ADVANTAGE!!!
As for the athens lady who yelled that the fu kid was a dirty player.....thats not true whatsoever....think about it for a second..the ball was going out of bounds on the side where the bleachers are 5 feet from the endline, the athens kid was slowing down to keep the fu kid from playing the ball, and he ran right into him....he immediately patted the kid on the back to say my bad....it wasnt dirty in any way.

All in all congrats to athens for being a great team and good luck in your next game. As for fu, hey it was a great season and certainly something to build from. Alot of skilled players coming back and now with some experience.....nothing to be down about, we got beat by a better team tonight....

Congrats to Athens, they were just simply the better team. Good luck in the Finals.

For FU, congratulations on a great year. In the short history of this program you are probably the best team to ever come out of it. Last nights performance though won`t earn our program much respect in the District. We just have to keep building off of this year. We have a good Junior and Sophomore class coming back next year where we can have just as much sucess as this year if they work hard. Keep your heads up and good luck and congrats again to the Seniors.

Smeltzy- Don't sell FU short, they earned a ton of respect this season and last night's result does nothing to take that away. Athens has played great soccer all season long and according to most, they were the top team in the District no matter what division. It's something to build off of and while a lot were questioning the schedule(myself included), the players can't control who they play and dominated most of who they did play.

As to the merits of the alleged "dirty player" as called out by the Athens parent in the Fairfield Union game last night, I took over 300 pictures of that game. There are two very clear shots of the FU player pushing the Athens player on the back AFTER he was out of bounds. Pictures don't lie. It was intentional, maybe even out of frustration, but still intentional. The ref spoke to him about it (I heard this since we were sitting right in front of them). Was it dirty play? No, not really, just a frustrated young man venting. This was a really clean game and both teams are to be commended for their sportsmanship. The match between Athens and either Chillicothe or Marietta should be interesting. The last few matches with Chilli and Athens , Chilli was exceptionally unsportsmanlike, taunting the Athens crowd after a goal or a call in their favor (this was captured by video and very indisputable). I am a Chillicothe alum so this was a particularly disappointing thing to witness. This is also something a good coach will not allow his/her team to do.
Kudos to Athens and FU for a game well played last night.

I was very excited to get and watch this match, hoping to see wether or not FU had an argument for the #1 seed... and well I was disappointed to say the least. Not only was Athens better in every aspect of the game but FU didn't do very much well at all... shape, positioning, tempo, touch, movement, defending, passing, decision making... I can go on... The most disapointing part was that they even lacked in work rate and effort which no matter how good or a bad a team may be with regard to tactics and technique they should always at least be able to work as hard and fight harder which didn't happen last night at all. Wasted trip...

On the contrary Athens looked very tough and 3-0 isn't indicative of the difference between the two sides... deserved more like 5 or 6. Good luck the rest of the way!
