I know most of you are biased, but I'm not sure some of you quite understand what Derek Roback did. He accounted for 605 all-purpose yards and all 8 of Waverly's touchdowns. Also, 17 tackles is pretty good.

Who chooses the winner?

Roback certainly played extremely well.

IronmanTradition: I don't think it's fair to say that Jackson's game was only against Wellston. Piketon's not exactly a huge school either - much smaller than Waverly. And I don't understand why Boggs is not worth mentioning either. His completion percentage was 67% - Roback's was only 51% - the thing is that you can't throw for touchdown passes unless your coach sends in a passing play. Roback's number of passes and his accomplishments are notable and with them, the great come-back of the Tigers makes him the stand-out of this past weekend - but, to use a basketball analogy - it's not hard to score 60 points in a game when you get to shoot the ball 200 times. I won't take anything from Roback - but it's obvious that the coaches have a lot of faith in him or they wouldn't let him pass so often, and that is what allowed him to shine.

But, no one who was mentioned on this thread was undeserving.

This person is a stinkin genius What would be interesting is to see the other members stats. It looks like this kid and his coaches think hes the new trevor walls but better. I wish all kids with awesome ability to shine could, instead of the coach's kid.

I agree, Price and Malone caught the ball well and made some nice plays. However, to say that w/o them Roback's stats would be horrendous is a stretch, to say the least. How do we know that Robertson, Rowland, or Kretzer wouldn't have made some of the plays/catches that Price and Malone did? I believe that 6 players had at least 2 catches of 30+ yards. Waverly has an excellent recieving core and any one of them is capable of making big plays. To answer your question about Malone playing wide reciever...He plays WR in certain formations. When Waverly runs the spread, he's used as a reciever b/c he's good. He adds another threat, so why not line him up in the slot? Your idea that the coaching staff not using him so Roback would "shine" is completely foolish. The last thing Waverly's coaching staff preaches is "I". Everything they do puts the TEAM first. Let me ask you this question: If Malone would've gotten 300 yards on 40 carries, would you be saying that the coaching staff didn't use Roback or any of the others so Malone could shine? Didn't think so.

Hey I would like to say Zanesville Cole Hudson 19-25 258 yds passing and a TD run and pass pretty good for a JR first game but hard to argue with this ROBACK kid wow impressive.

Roback for sure, what a stat line!! The 17 tackles and the BIG punt return in clutch makes the difference in my opinion. 27-47 is avg but 6 TDs is outstanding! All are very deserving and by the years' end all mentioned players could/will win this award. Angle is a beast and will win this poll especially once league play begins. Even if the QB from Burg doesn't get it this year he seems to be destined to be nominated several times during his career. Clutch! Some may not understand the rivalry that has been created b/w Itown and Burg.

My mistake on overlooking Robertson, Rowland, or Kretzer, however, that is 5 players stats that are good to one, Robacks stats are Roback's, of the plays, Roback is in all and those five awesome kids will have to share the play time, understandable, and also, who says Malone is the best either? Even if the other players had 300 yards and 40 carries, Robacks stats will still be awesome. So I do think so, I don't appreciate your smart attact, it is unneccessary and straight up rude and wrong of you. Plus, I am only quoting what somebody else is saying and agreeing with them, why attack me, cause I am not on the Roback train? Does that make me any less credible? Who says you are right? If that indeed happened, would the coaches not had been utilizing Roback and the other players so Malone could shine? I see what you're saying about Roback having more rushing attempts than Malone, but how many of those attempts were busted pass plays where he had to take off? I would venture to say that at least half were. I don't presume to know you, but if you're from Waverly, then there's a good chance I know something of you. Boggs: 130 yards in 4 successfully completed passes gives Tyler 32.5 yards each.

I think, as a passing quarterback, and considering that he didn't get every offensive minute of the ball game to work with, Boggs wins the passing QB of week 1, even if he doesn't win the player of the week, although he was named the Jackson Telegram's "Player of the Week!

Jackson played a very good game and the O line was much more effective than a lot of people, including me, expected. I will repeat, Boggs deserves to be mentioned and considered.

I expect that Cody Huff will be mentioned on the following "player of the week" threads this season, as will Trace and Lindamood. These boys have heart, spunk, and natural athleticism. Lindamood is a flyer down that field (I am so proud of myself for remembering his name thanks to Grndma1!!!) Jackson is proud of all of you guys AND everyone of your teammates!

But with all of the boys mentioned, there are all of the other players on the field that have to do their job in order to make it happen for the team. A special acknowledgement for each and every one of them who didn't bow out during two-a-days, who sweat like pigs all night Friday/Saturday night, and played with as much heart as they did.
