How did Jackson go from 22 to 27 points? Did they get a FG and a Safety? Or was it actually 21-0 at one time and not 22-0 as was reported on WKKJ?

Waverly always plays hard nose against Jackson. I knew it would be close regardless of the first half lead. Sounds like it was a great game. I hope Waverly wins out the rest of the season. Congrads to my beloved Ironman.

Gratz to Jackson they played a good ballgame. Unfortunately the comeback didn't work. The defense started to hold the run in the second half, just couldn't mount a comeback. The interception hurt, but the O still made some amazing plays just not quite enough this time.
Good luck next week Go Tigers

Congratulations to the Jackson Ironmen on a huge win tonight at Waverly! The Tigers ALWAYS come to play against the Ironmen. Waverly never gave up and clawed their way back into the game in the 4th quarter, but Jackson was just too strong tonight.

The Jackson offensive line was absolutely amazing the entire night. Waverly knew what was coming, but they still couldn't stop it. Jackson also played extremely well defensively. They did a good job on Roback and really limited the big plays for Waverly.

Cody Huff was outstanding! Banged up, carrying the ball constantly, and he just never let up! All heart Huffy!!! I hate to single anyone out because the entire team played so well, but Huff was just special tonight.

Couldn't be more proud to be an Ironman tonight!

Cody Huff 42 carries and 259 yards with 3 TD....on a broken toe.

With a late 1st down to completely seal the victory the Jackson players all celebrated their win...except for Huff....he just stood there hunched over motionless....he left every ounce of it out there. Kudos to the tremendous senior.

2 great punts by Mullins later in the 2nd half were GIGANTIC and IMO 2 of the top 5 biggest plays by Jackson in the 2nd half.

When Trace gets the ball, good things happen.

Another solid and meaningful performance from the sophomore FB Kla Aurthur.

Ryan Hughes.....wow, that reminded me of some of the great lineman of our past...special game and great sack of the QB very early in the game.

Great pass by Josh Brown to Trace for a big score in the 3rd....in which I labored for from the sidelines.

With a 21-0 lead and every ounce of momentum.....I hated the kickoff deep.....which lead to a 15 point lead about 10 seconds later.

Not a lot of big negatives for the Ironmen...no turnovers, made some big plays, played hard on a very humid evening......pretty big win.

Waverly has a tremendous player......but teams are going to run at them hard.

Does Waverly ever kick the extra point....if so it was stupid to go for two down 21-12.

Good luck to Waverly the rest of the way.

Oh...and the pass interference call on the bad snap on the punt attempt.......UNBELIEVABLE.......a legitimate 60 yard call that was of poor a call as you'll ever see.

And a classy postgame interview by Coach Wolford....passing all credit to the kids, his defensive coach and his o-line coach....even admitting that the TD to Trace was all done by QB Brown and receiver Brandon Trace.

Nice post 92. I'm glad you have your thoughts together because I sure don't. Couldn't remember any specifics as I was posting.

42 carries for 259 yards and 3 TD's....WOW!

It was a great game. Both teams really played their hearts out. It was a great atmosphere, good game, good food, really good music, and I even enjoyed taking part in the wave on Jackson's side. Congrats Ironmen on the win and congrats Tigers on the way you played the game.

Liked your review of the game but not sure what you mean about the pass interference call mentioned above. Are you saying that defensive pass interference should not have been called?
From my angle it seemed like a routine pass interference call. The contact happened right in front of the Waverly crowd---and it seemed pretty clear that the defender knocked the offensive reciever off his route while the ball was in the air. The offensive player was looking back to locate the ball and make the catch and was then contacted by the defender who was had not located the ball and was not looking back to make a play on the ball.

ANyway---just wondering. Jackson game-planned very well and came hungry for a win over the Tigers tonight. Congrats Ironmen.

Up against a terribly tight deadline last night, this what Brad Sherman of our sister paper The Pike County News-Watchman cranked out. The headline is my production by the way. Enjoy.

Taming Tigers: Jackson snaps slide to Waverly

By BRAD SHERMAN
For The Times-Journal

WAVERLY — More than just a catch phase from the sitcom Happy Days, “sit on it” was the Jackson Ironmen’s game plan for the latter part of Friday night’s high school football game — and it worked.

After jumping out to a three-touchdown lead in the first half, Jackson was able to stave off a late Waverly Tigers’ comeback and hold on for a 27-20 victory at Raidiger Field.

Jackson’s Cody Huff, who was playing with a slightly-injured toe, ran for a game-high 259 yards on 40 carries and scored three touchdowns.

All of those scores came in the first half as the Ironmen staked claim to a fast 21-0 advantage.

Jackson scored just once in the second half, but was able to hold on to the ball just long enough.

The game ended with the Red and White running out the final 4:13 with a time-consuming drive to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

“I never want to do it, but sometimes when you get on a lead like that, you kind of have to sit on it,” admitted Jackson coach Shane Wolford.

The win was Jackson’s first over Waverly in the Wolford era.

The Tigers had won four straight over the Ironmen, including a 42-7 drubbing last season.

“I’m glad, as a head coach, to finally get one on those guys,” said Wolford. “In the last three years, they’ve beat us four times. It was big for all of us; the kids really wanted this game.”

The loss also brought to an end a 15-game home-winning streak for the Waverly, which fell to 1-1.

The Tigers, who had just one first down and 22 yards in the first half, looked like a different team in the second half.

Waverly scored twice on Derek Roback touchdown passes following intermission, but ultimately ran out of time.

Roback engineered a beautiful six-play drive that covered 83 yards in 1:04 near the end of the fourth quarter.

Roback was 5-for-6 passing on the drive, including a five-yard scoring pass to Jake Kretzer.

Kretzer also hauled in the two-point conversion to cut the Ironmen lead to 27-20 with 4:14 left to play.

Roback, for the game, completed 14-of-29 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Kretzer caught four balls for 58 yards and Kevin Malone grabbed three passes for 56.

The momentum was clearly on the Tigers’ side at that point, but Jackson recovered the ensuing onside kick and held the ball for the final four-plus minutes to secure the win.

Jackson’s final game-ending drive was reminiscent of those in the first half, in which Huff and Klay Arthur ran over the Waverly defense with little resistance.

“We started slow, we weren’t ready to play,” said Waverly coach Rusty Wright. “Give Jackson all the credit, they came to play. They took it right to us and we couldn’t stop it.”

Waverly’s lone score of the first half came on a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Malone.

The extra point was blocked, and the score stood 21-6 at the half.

The Tigers opened the second half with a scoring drive that featured a wacky pitch-and-catch between Roback and Malone.

Roback was flushed out of the pocket and threw a jump ball into the end zone, where

Malone caught it for a 30-yard scoring play.

The Ironmen’s only score of the second half was a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Brown to tight end Brandon Trace on a fourth down and long play.

Arthur added 60 yards rushing for Jackson, which amassed 317 yards total on the ground.

Waverly was still unable to get the ground attack going as it posted only 18 yards on 14 tries as a team.

Jackson plays its home opener next Friday when Vinton County visits Alumni Stadium.

Waverly, meanwhile, will entertain another Jackson County team — Wellston.

All I can say is WOW!!!! With my son being one of those kids that will always be one on the line I tend to focus on those players. I always say that the line makes the way and than they are hardly ever get recognized for their efforts. It is always about the QB and who makes the touchdown. But in all my years watching football that #52 was EXCELLENT last night. I hope that when my son gets to high school that he can perform as well as that kid!!!! Not taking away from Huff, he also did an awesome job. All the Ironmen went to get a a job done and did exactly that! All them played with heart and soul!

Congratulations to the Ironmen on a nice win, they were the better team last night. Jackson was a bigger, stronger and more physical team.

The Tigers will continue to work hard and improve.

Video is now available as well over at www.nextvsports.com

Thanks..

As it stands we do not have a game 3 to cover. Our sponsorship search has been a bit dry. To be honest we have been so busy just getting the site and other things ironed out that we haven't had time to pursue them just yet. I can be reached at 937-779-4043 if anyone has any questions about how to sponsor us for a game in your area. It's quite cheep and I'd be happy to explain it.... Andy (nextvsports)
