I know Smead kept extra machines in there that wasn't in use with no room to store them at the plant. Metal Bestos use to keep over flow stock in there, but that's when the building was renting space out to people and businesses. I loaded and unloaded some of that stuff in and out of there. You are talking about the building almost at the top of the hill on the left as your going out of town, aren't ya?

Smeads was at this location at one time. It was a warehouse to start with, to ship things to the East coast. I lot of folders went to Washington D.C. to supply congress. When Jim Heinlein came out of the services he cleaned up and watched the place until they started doing production in the early 60s. Just became too small so they bought and built on the land they are at now. From what I heard Jim was ask to run the new plant because he had a college education, a must to run one of several Smead plants in the country owned by Mrs. Hoffman out of Hastings, Minnesota. When Jim retired at Smeads Norm Reed,2nd in charge, wasn't allowed to take over because he had no college education so they hired Mr. Rutter to run it after he came out of the air force.

Smeads has gone down hill over the years. Always so many stories about them shutting down. Lot of machines have gone to Mexico. With computers you just do not need a lot of paper work.

Agree, computers file stuff easier than a folder can with no clutter. Maybe someday Smead will have it's name on this area businesses of the past thread.

Just last summer, owners Mike and Kay Mercer and their sales and service staff celebrated the 30th anniversary of the business. But with sales dwindling and business in the service department decreasing, they had to make a painful decision after facing the realization that things just aren’t going to get any better.

“The accountant recommended, especially with the service department where everything is more expensive, that we get on with (closing down) three or four years ago,” Mike Mercer said. “I just didn’t want to do it because we’re family here. But it just got to the point we had to.

“I’ve been in this business for 53 years,” he continued, “and the cars now are so expensive. We’re in kind of a depressed area here in Hocking County and people want lesser-priced cars. We get (used vehicles) to where they’re safe to put on the highway, and by the time you get it done it’s harder to be fair on price.”
