After Week 2 Ranking the area teams since the PDT won't

Post by Trojan_FB_Alum »

1. Chillicothe (1-1) Last week # 3- The Cavaliers rebounded after a close week one loss to Brookhaven to beat defending division 3 State Champ Big Walnut on the road. That’s a pretty big win in my book! Even though the Cavs have a loss they earn the top spot this week because of the schedule that they play.
2. West (2-0) last week # 7 - WOW!!! West showed that they are for real Friday night by taking Portsmouth out to the tune of 34-0. The Senators have one of the fastest defenses that I have seen in a long time. They were able to man handle a young Trojan team and kept after them all night. The SOC better be ready because the Westside is.
3. Wheelersburg (2-0) last week #1 – The Burg wins again with help from sophomore QB Brandon Shankweiler, who put up three TDs on the night. Older brother Jordan also scored for the Pirates giving them a 28-20 victory over a scrappy South Point team. The Burg looks to be maturing well, and the rest of the teams on their schedule better take notice or they will end up getting SHANKED!!!!
4. Jackson (2-0) last week # 6 – The Ironmen move up 2 spots this week after holding Waverly’s high powered offense to 20 points on their way to a 27-20 victory over the Tigers. The Ironmen have a tough schedule which may send them up the rankings if they can keep on winning. Look for Jackson to enter league play with a 3-0 mark.
5. Minford (2-0) – last week # 4 - I hated to move the Falcons down a spot this week after a win, but I was just more impressed with the play of the top 4. The Falcons did pick up there second win of the season over a Wellston team that was beat soundly by Jackson the week before. I hate to use like opponents to compare teams but sometimes that’s all I have. The Falcons will have plenty of chance to climb the poll later in the season.
6. Ironton (1-1) last week # 5 – Before anyone says anything I’m shocked the Fighting Tigers are this low too, but I have no choice with a loss to the Burg and a blowout victory over some team from Canada that I have no clue how good or how bad they are. The Tigers did look impressive this week and should continue the wins for the next two weeks, then the Tigers get a shot to move up the list.
7. Gallia Academy (2-0) Last week # 8 – The Blue Devils win another close game as they defeated their cross river rival Point Pleasant 28-21. The Blue Devils have defeated two teams that are not expected to fair very well this year but a wins a win. They will have a chance to move up the list this week as they travel to Ironton, with a stop in Jackson week 4 before they return home to face the Chieftains of Logan in week five. Win any or all of those and the Blue Devils will be moving up.
8. Portsmouth (1-1) Last week #2 – The Trojans were out done Friday night by a very good veteran team. West took it to them from the very beginning and never let up. Portsmouth’s defense was able to hold the Senators to 14 for most of the night and force several turnovers on downs, which is pretty good considering the rushing game West has, and the great field position that the Trojans allotted them. This was the only bright spot for the Trojans on an otherwise dismal night. THE TROJANS MUST FIND A LINE and in a hurry. The Trojans have a chance to rebound this week as they travel to the Burg, strange things seem to happen when these two get together.
9. Valley (2-0) last week # 10 – The Indians win in impressive fashion over an out matched Rock Hill team. The Indians should get more of a test in the next three weeks then they get to see where they stand as the Pirates of Wheelersburg come to Lucasville. So far so good in Indian country.
10. East- (2-0) Last week # 9 - The Tartans move to 2-0 after a 26- 7 victory over an 0-2 Southeastern team. East continues its regular season win streak, but strength of schedule hurts the Tartans in the poll. With none of East opponents ranked in the top ten it will be hard for the Tartans to advance until the top 10 starts to cannibalize each other.
11. Waverly (1-1) Last week # 10 – The Tigers fell one spot this week after a loss to Jackson. Waverly’s defense was better this week but fell just short of keeping pace with the Ironmen. I may have under estimated the Tigers, but they will have more chances to prove themselves later in the season,
12. Oak Hill (1-1) Last Week tied for # 12 – The Oaks take control of the # 12 spot after sharing last week. Oak Hill defeated River Valley 33- 0 after a week one heartbreaker to Chesapeake. I think the Oaks should be safe for the next two weeks till they face Minford week four in what may be a pivotal game in region 19 and the Oaks first chance at breaking into the top ten.
13. Notre Dame (1-1) last week tied for # 12 – The Titans lost their home opener on Saturday night with a 20-6 lost to Bishop Rosecrans in a hard fought game. The Titians seemed to have a strong running game but had too many turnovers, if they can learn to hold onto the ball they could be trouble in SOC 1.
14. Symmes Valley (1-1) last week tied for #12 – The Vikings lost 20-6 to Matewan. I don’t know much about Matewan so it’s hard judge the Vikings. They will have a chance to make a move next week and when SOC play starts.
15. Northwest(1-1) last week # 16- The Mohawks picked up their first win against a division 6 school who is in there first year of varsity football. This was enough to get them out of last place but not by much. Plenty of chances for the Mohawks to move up but I don’t expect much.
16. Green (1-0) last week tied for #12 - The Bobcats didn’t play this week, but with Northwest rolling Manchester the Bobcats fall to #16.

Nicely done. I think I would maybe put Waverly ahead of Portsmouth and Symmes Valley ahead of Notre Dame. That's just my opinion.

Valley under Portsmouth? Is that because of strength of schedule?

West at 2 because they thumped a bad portsmouth team (at least very bad that night) ??? West 4 spots better than Ironton ? West ahead of Burg ? I'm not buying that --

West isn't # 2 just for beating Portsmouth; West is # 2 for the style in which they have won their first 2 games. I wasn't sure about putting them past the Burg but since the Burg only had a one score victory over a South Point team that lost by two scores to as you say a bad Portsmouth team. If you would have read the reasoning behind placing each team where they are you would have seen that I to wanted to place Ironton higher but until they beat a team that someone south of the Canadian boarder has heard of I have little choice.

The Indians are in the 9th spot because of the schedule they have played so far. The Indians will have plenty of chances to move up in the 2nd half of their season.

I said portsmouth was bad that night , and they were . hopefully they right the ship and discover an offense ---If not I'm not sure they don't get mercy ruled in conference games. As far as the West-portsmouth game --everyone was talking bad about portsmouth's O line --their tackling on D left alot to be desired. I was much more suprised with how bad portsmouth was than impressed with West. Don't forget portsmouth was down in the 4th quarter to SP 15-14. I know they came back and won but I thought they looked very lethargic that night. MD

Manitou Dan,
Have you ever thought that maybe the reason portsmouth looked so bad tackling, is that they were tackling very big and strong backs. As you will see, A lot of teams are going to have a tough time tackling the west backs. And to say that portsmouth is terrible is just stupid. It could be that west is just really good this year and made them look bad. Do you know how difficult it is to only give up 97 yds total in 2 games and hold both opponents scoreless. How about this one, The opponents only crossed you 50 three times? So you tell me what it was

Goat --NEVER said portsmouth was terrible --don't put words where they don't belong , AGAIN I said portsmouth was bad THAT NIGHT in week 2 and looked lethargic but escaped in week 1 after being behind in the 4th quarter .

Polls are fun to argue over when people don't take them so personal. Ironton (who I have no love for) is propably 2 minutes from being # 1 . It appears West is catching the OVC at the right time , 90% of the teams are 0-2 already and look to be down this year. West should run off several more wins a row .

Manitou, seems you have no love for West either. The rest will just have to be settled on the field each week. Best of luck West, this team is about hard work.

West is fine, but lots of folks are going nuts because they won their 1st 2 games, I just don't see them ranked ahead of burg, and ironton. had they ranked West somewhere between 3rd and 5th I'd had no comment --hard to penalize a school over their schedule in week 2 ! even if itown went canadian eh' .

West is off to a good start, just don't think because they creamed p-town and will propably reel off 4-5 more wins over teams that are down this year that everyone else is ready to rank them higher than the burg or ironton. They are a very solid team and weeks 7-10 will determine whether they have a good year or a great year. fair enough ?

I have watched alot of football in many states, and I have not seen a "group" of backs that all run as hard as the Westside boys do in a long time. Also speaking of the defense. I say wow. One word to define it, relentless. They went hard for 4 quarters every down. Yes I graduated from West, but if they were "average" or "substandard" I would not be putting my 2 cents in. It is High School and they are subject to getting thumped just the same if they don't bring that kind of intensity every play. The way they fly to the ball reminds of Notre Dame High school's 1987 defense that did not allow a point until the 3rd round of the playoffs. They have that kind of scrappiness.

Good Work on the Rankings, you should email them to the Daily Times and they could "cut & paste" them into the paper, thats what they do best!!!
