State Championship Favorites
I know the games are 3 months away but who do you think are some of the favorites to advance to the state title games? Any repeats from last year?
The only ones I think that could repeat may be Lakewood St Ed with another enormous O-Line and already beating Glenville. Also maybe in D-VI with Delphos St Johns. Last year was a walk through for them in the title game but I noticed this year they started the year 0-2 and then I seen their 2 losses was to a strong D-5 Lima Central Catholic 21-14 and D-1 Detroit Catholic Central 14-7 (WOW) I guess there is nothing like playing a big inner city Detroit team to get you ready for that MAC schedule.

Re: State Championship Favorites
I don't know about favorites just yet, to early to tell but I do know my pick for the toughest schedule in the State this year: Cincy St. Xavier
Springfield
Pick Central
Colerain
Trinity (Louisville,Ky)
Moeller
Elder
LaSalle
St. Ed's
Iggy
St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky)
Note: They're currently only 8th in their region at 2-0 but I see a couple losses coming later. There are a lot of football titles (let alone other titles) won by these schools over the years. Brutal schedule, they're lucky enough to have around 120 player's but with that schedule I'd thank my lucky stars as a coach if I had 80 kids healthy at season's end.

Re: State Championship Favorites
You think St. X has a tough schedule take a look at St.Edward's meat grinder,,start off with Glenville then play Pittsburg Penn Hills who might be the weakest on their schedule then Cardinal Mooney,Cincy Elder,Tampa Jefferson (Florida state champ last year) then Ursuline,Don Bosco prep a national powerhouse out of N.J.,then St.Xavier,Moeller, and finally St.Ignatius,,they get through that undefeated and they are my clear cut favorite to win big school....
Re: State Championship Favorites
Ironton has got to be an early fav. Most of the team returns. Didnt They beat the champs last year in week 7 or 8.

Re: State Championship Favorites
St Ed will be lucky to get through that without losing half of their starters, let alone undefeated. The Championship game last year with them and Wayne was a classic but down right COLD. Listening to the radio at the game last year they said St Ed line was 10 pounds lighter than OSU and 20 pounds lighter than the Bengals total. They had some brutes and from the sound of things they do again this year.C-Bolt wrote:You think St.

Lakewood St.Edward could repeat, but in D1 that's a difficult feat with such a deep field.......and the GCL can never be counted out.
Kenton has to be considered one of the favorites in D4 with the prolific passing attack led by QB Maty Mauk, who has committed to Missouri. The Wildcats won back to back state titles with Ben Mauk.
Ursuline could end up 5-5 and still be the favorite to win D-5, but I noticed that they were tied for last in their region at 0-2, so they have some work to do to get in the top 8, which won't be easy with their schedule.

Re: State Championship Favorites
D1- If St. Ed's gets in they are the favorite
D2- Toss up, any number of teams could win this
D3- Early favorites: Cardinal Mooney/Stueby/Marlington.....region 11 is loaded
D4- Agree with Kenton
D5- Ursaline/Coldwater
D6- Repeat champs from last year.
Anything can happen. Isn't Don Bosco prep ranked number one in the nation? I know they have four guys in the ESPN top 150

Re: State Championship Favorites
Just seen where Kenton beat Coldwater at Coldwater to open up the season. That's not a bad way to start out the year. Would Ironton and Kenton play each other before the Finals?
I would love to see Kenton play with that spread attack up and down the field using the no huddle. Would be even better if I got to see them play a team in the Finals from this area.

Would love to agree with gwa about Ironton but i think in a matchup with Kenton or someone like them it would be very ugly for the tigers. But if they do I will travel north to watch them.

I agree. A matchup between Kenton or anyone else in this area would get very ugly. Nobody sees a passing attack that is even remotely close to that around here.clbbig wrote:Would love to agree with gwa about Ironton but i think in a matchup with Kenton or someone like them it would be very ugly for the tigers. Re: State Championship Favorites
way too early to throw ironton into this mix, with games left with the likes of plain city jonathon alder, columbus bishop hartley, jackson, and simon kenton, etc. we'll know more in a few weeks.

D4
Kenton (2-1) got absolutely hammered by (D4) Van Wert (1-2) last night.
Final
Van Wert......66
Kenton.........13
WOW......wonder what happened in this game?

I went to the Kenton - Coldwater game and was extremely disappointed with Kenton's QB. Don't get me wrong, he was a great athlete and has a good arm but going to Mizzou I was expecting huge things. Kenton did not throw the ball further downfield than 8 yards the whole game. Of the first 21 plays of the game there was 13 QB draws and 7 screen passes and 1 TE dump for 6 yards. The biggest play of the game was a 20 yard pass for a TD that was really a 3 yard out pass and a broken tackle. Kenton's offensive line and wide receivers are no where near what they were when the other Mauk played (I watched them several times as well). I think Ironton would probably be favored by 2 + TD's if they played right now.
On the flip side, Coldwaters QB has a stronger arm and is more accurate than Mauk was, and he is only a Junior. Coldwater replaced 8 starters on offense and 7 on defense from the team that went to state title game last year according to their fans.
Re: State Championship Favorites
Ursuline could go 5-5 and still easily be in the top 4 in their region and get a home game; and then walk through the D5 playoffs. 4 wins is the break even point as far as making the playoffs for Ursuline imo. Mentor Lake Catholic is a huge game for them tonight.trojandave wrote: Ursuline could end up 5-5 and still be the favorite to win D-5, but I noticed that they were tied for last in their region at 0-2, so they have some work to do to get in the top 8, which won't be easy with their schedule.
