Maybe seeing newspapers in the past? Or maybe he's had a basic journalism or layout class where they discuss front-page layouts. Either way, the new wave of newspapers is to put less text, more pictures, and 4-5 articles on the front page with jumps to entice readers to actually open the paper up.

None of that matters, really. Just playing the devil's advocate.

The Voice is a nice publication.

Not a bad-looking front page.
The stories have a very old-school feel to the way they are written.

Personally, I usually described mine as 'clinical.' But then my real job demands that style.

Well, after 5 weeks, the Times finally nailed it. Great coverage in today's edition. The stories were easy to read, they had stats from the game and some good pics. The only pic I would question is the one of the Rock Hill QB by himself. Do they really sell that many papers up that way. IMO, should have been a local kid in the shot. JMO.

Overall I would have to give them a "B" Still not doing a very good job on the other teams, from around the area that have played out of the area. The West-Chesapeake game article was hard to follow, but at least they did try on it. Very much improved this week over the last 4. Looks like someone went back and looked over how the format was done over the years. The gameday on Friday looked like it did in the past.

Keep up the good work PDT. Put out a quality paper and you will sell the quantity

what if the daily times only ran on wed, fri, sat, sun? i think it would help them out a little.
i believe waverly does something similiar to this.

Really nice looking pics, but I think more than two stories should be on the front of a section.

But if U look at the rest of the paper all teams have equal coverage with excellent write up's.Sometimes get a name wrong here and there.There isn't enough room on the front page to provide such extensive articles for all teams. I, for one, don't mind turning the page to find my team.Pictures from all games too.If U stop in their office later in week I think they give U a copy.Might be wrong but I think (I live in Wheelersburg) that last year I went there to have something faxed and picked up a copy and it was free.Also had small articles of teams outside on county with heading of games of interest in this week's coverage.

Please no critiquing of my grammar or use of punctuation.LOL. I already know it is bad.

IMO the only way to help this paper is to get rid of the corp ownership and bring the control of the people locally. After the big shot CEO's get the big time paycheck for doing nothing and soak up all the profits the local companies suffer. They drain any money that they they could use to hire more writers, editors, & photosgraphers. I remember some of the great stuff that paper produced years ago. I personaly don't like mass owership of media outlets. What is good for, lets say Columbus, isn't good for a small town like Portsmouth....That's my 2 cents...

I am not qualified and have no idea about laying out pages, Quark, Photoshop, working on G-4s or any of that stuff. I just stated my opinion. By the way, Quark is much better than Publisher, isn't it?

It just looks bulky with only two stories on the front.

It gives you the impression that it is a football newsletter. If that is what you want, then it is great!

Is only football important? What about the other sports? Should each of those have its own paper?

Guy, that wouldn't work. With all respect to the Portsmouth area and its people, after living there for six years I have seen very little good come out of local ownership of anything. If there were some educated wealthy person with a legit interest in journalism it might be different but in the 2 years I worked at the PDT all I saw was rich folks hating us for reporting on them and poor folks thinking they signed our checks.

There just aren't locals with that expertise.

Ohio Valley Publishing (the Gallipolis, Pomeroy, and Point Pleasant papers) were owned locally for many years, but eventually they had to be sold to a larger interest. The group has changed hands several times in the past ten years as somebody else comes in and tries to turn a profit.

Newspapers make the majority of their revenue by selling advertising space. If your advertisers dry up, you lose big chunks of revenue.

For example, who are the largest businesses in Gallia County? Holzer (which advertises A LOT in the paper) and Wal-Mart, which historically has a corporate policy of NOT advertising in newspapers.

I guess that I see it as a case of corporate ownership is the only way many of these papers survive these days.

Eventually, I imagine small-town papers will either evolve or completely die out.
