I PLAYED FOOTBALL IN BECKLEY WV FOR WOODROW WILSON 2ND LARGEST AAA SCHOOL IN THE STATE AT THE TIME. THE LAST CLASS OF THE DAY ALL ATHLETES WERE PUT INTO A PHYS ED CLASS. OFF SEASON WE DID AGILITY DRILLS, LIFTED WEIGHTS, OR RAN 5 MILES DEPSNDING ON THE DAY AND SCHEDULE. IT WAS AN ADVANTAGE BECAUSE IT GOT US HOME AN HOUR EARLIER TO GET TO OUR LESSONS.
IN SEASON WE LIFTED AND WATCHED FILMS PRIOR TO PRACTICE. THE SYSTEM WORKED VERY WELL AND WAS UTILIZED FOR ALL SPORTS. WE ALMOST ALWAYS MADE THE PLAYOFFS AND WERE STATE CHAMPS MY FRESHMAN YEAR.

BY HAVING IT AS A CLASS , THE ATHLETES HAD 2 REASONS TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY... GRADE AND TEAM. ALSO YOU HAD ORGANIZED SUPERVISION OVERSEEING THE WORKOUTS....I AM A BELIEVER THAT THIS WORKS

Gallipolis sure needs one. The Blue Devils have competed fairly well during the past 10 years, but wonder how they would have done with such a program?

YES !!!!IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INTERESTING TO SEE HOW MUCH BETTER SOME OF OUR PLAYOFF TEAMS "COULD HAVE" BEEN -" IF WE WOULD HAVE....." BUT WE DON'T !!!

AS SUPPORTERS WE ALL NEED TO KEEP DEMANDING THIS...JUST STAND BY THE OPPONENTS LOCKER ROOM AFTER THE GAMES WHEN WE PLAY THE SUCCESSFUL TEAMS AND YOU CAN PHYSICALLY SEE THE DIFFERENCE--- NOW I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS THE TOTAL ANSWER BUT IT PUTS YOUR PROGRAM ON AN EQUAL PLAYING FIELD WITH RESPECT TO THE CHANCE TO AQUIRE STRENGTH....

It's a great idea. Such a class should be a combination of strength and agility training.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, here is something that Hugh Wyatt (http://www.coachwyatt.com) wrote recently:

I wouldn't say we have an in-season strength program. Our kids don't have athletic weight training in the curriculum, and most of them play other sports, so after-school lifting is not much of an option.

We simply work on the "TANS" (Triceps-Abs-Necks-Squats) every day. Incidentally, I was hired in late July, and didn't arrive in Ocean Shores until August 10, so there was no summer weight training program here. Big deal. Coaching can overcome a lot. Despite what some people will try to tell you about "losing games in last summer's weight room," I don't buy that garbage. That is a copout and an attempt to blame the kids (or someone else). In 30+ years of coaching I have found numerous ways to lose games, but I have never lost a game in the weight room. HW)

Look's like someone buys into what Wyatt has to say.

Wyatt's team is currently 5-1 on the season.

ALL I CAN SAY IS THE POSTS FROM SOME OF THE TEAMS VS THEIR RECORDS INDICATE IT MAY BE HELPING. FROM WHAT I OBSERVE IN THE OPPONENTS WHO BEAT US MOST REGULARLY IS THEY HAVE A STRONG STRENGTH PROGRAM GENERALLY AS A CLASS THAT THE ATHLETES TAKE. OF COURSE THESE SAME SCHOOLS HAVE A WELL ROUNDED COMPLETE PROGRAM AS WELL SO IT IS DIFFICULT TO ATTRIBUTE THIER COMPLETE SUCCESS TO THE WEIGHT LIFTING BUT I FEEL IT IS THIER EDGE OVER WHAT WE ARE DOING....

One of my best friends is the head coach at a Big AAAA school in North Carolina and they have an incredible weight program. They have been a playoff team all 8 years the school has been opened!I think it is definetly true that you cant win without weights!Thats just my humble opinion though! :mrgreen:As a matter of fact he just knocked off the #3 team in Big AAAA last friday night 33-31! Heres the article!

I don't think that anybody would suggest that weight training would hurt a football program.

However, "football player" is a temperament, not a set of numbers like a 40 time or a bench press poundage. It is hard-nosed, hard-working and a "fight them until we can't" attitude.

All the weight training in the world won't make a kid who won't hit into a hitter. It won't make a nice kid mean. It can only accentuate the mindset that is already there.

This statement might upset a few coaches.

Hugh Wyatt is certainly a bit of a contrarian.

Does P-town West have weightlifting class, because when I see those boys on the field, they look like some bad MO-FOs?

I wonder where the weight lifting facilites are in all these cases? Are they in the football fieldhouse or some other location? I do think that classes like this are good, especially if a coach can be the teacher. This would ensure the athletes aren't slumping off, and may get some other kids involved in sports.

www.coachwyatt.com

Hugh Wyatt writes a football blog that he posts on the site where he sells his Double Wing offense videos and books.

I have had occasional e-mail correspondence with Wyatt; he actually posted an e-mail I wrote to him about soccer on his site in a place separate from his regular e-mail correspondence, which was kinda neat.

He runs a bit conservative politically for my tastes sometimes, but he has some interesting ideas about coaching football, offensively and in general.

One of these days I am going attend one of his clinics and meet him. Neat guy.
